Srinagar: The army today paid tributes to the two jawans killed in an encounter with militants yesterday in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

"Homage was paid to the gallant soldiers, Late Lance Naik Bhandoriya Gopal Sinh Munimsinh and Sepoy Raghubeer Singh, at Badami Bagh Cantonment here," a defence spokesman said.

The spokesman said Major General K K Pant, Chief of Staff of Army's Chinar Corps, laid wreaths on behalf of the Corps Commander and all ranks of the Corps.

Tributes were also paid by officials from civil administration and other security agencies that included the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Inspector General of Police and Joint Director Intelligence Bureau.

The soldiers, who laid down their lives during the operation, showed raw courage to approach a house where the terrorists were confirmed to be hiding, he said.

"Lance Naik Bhandoriya Gopal Sinh Munimsinh and Sepoy Raghubeer Singh epitomised just that form of selfless courage as they were the leading buddy pair of the team that launched an operation in Frisal area of Kulgam yesterday during which four terrorists were eliminated.

"The duo embraced martyrdom while fighting the terrorists who opened indiscriminate fire as the security forces closed in on the suspect house," the spokesman said.

The 33-year-old Lance Naik hailed from Gokul Chand Chali Chamanpura village in Gujarat's Ahmedabad district and served in the army for 14 years. He is survived by his wife B Hemavati.


Sepoy Raghubeer Singh was only 31 years old and served in the force for 13 years. He belonged to Makholi village in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district and is survived by his wife Rekha and a six-year-old son.


"The army salutes the sacrifice of the martyrs and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and it will forever remain the army's responsibility to ensure they lead a life of dignity and pride," the spokesman said.

The mortal remains of the jawans are being taken to their native places for last rites.

Whatever accusations that are put on the Indian army the same can be put on Pakistan army too.
Wherever any army is deployed there are chances of grave violations, this is the truth.

Three soldiers were killed and at least five injured in an encounter with militants in Bandipora, 30 km away from Srinagar, on Tuesday. During the encounter, one Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, identified as Abu Haris, was killed.

An Army spokesman told The Hindu that the operation, which started around 6 a.m., has been "terminated."

"Three soldiers have been martyred and five others were injured. One terrorist was killed," said the spokesman. One Army major is among those injured.

The gunfight erupted at Parray Mohalla of Hajin area around 6 a.m. when militants opened fire at a search party.

One terrorist and three army personnel have been killed in an encounter in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, according to the news agency ANI. Arms and ammunition have been recovered from the Hajin area of the district. Six other security personnel and a civilian also suffered injuries in the gunbattle that began in the wee hours today, a police official said.

The injured security force personnel have been rushed to a hospital, a police official said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area this morning following specific intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the area. While the forces were conducting the search operation, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering the encounter, the official said.

Srinagar: The Indian Army on Wednesday paid homage to the four soldiers who were killed in operations against militants in the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday.

The commander of the Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General JS Sandhu, paid tributes to Major Satish Dahiya, Rifleman Ravi Kumar, Paratrooper Dharmender Kumar and Gunner Astosh Kumar at a solemn ceremony in Badamibagh cantonment here.

Major Dahiya, 31, led the Army operation in Handwara town in which three terrorists were killed.

"The operation dealt a major blow to the terror network in north Kashmir," a Defence Ministry statement said.

The official, survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter, hailed from Mahendergarh in Haryana.

Dahiya had been part of several counter-terrorism operations and was also awarded for gallantry earlier.

Rifleman Kumar, 33, hailed from Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir. He was part of another operation in Hajin town on Tuesday in which one terrorist was killed.

He is survived by his wife and a three-year-old daughter.

Paratrooper Dharmender Kumar from Nainital in Uttarakhand was also part of the same operation, the statement said.

"The young paratrooper, who defied his 26 years of age and established himself amongst his comrades as a spirited and daring soldier, is survived by his parents.

Patriotism and sense of sacrifice ran in the blood of gunner Astosh Kumar whose father Hava Lal Sahib had also laid down his life during the Kargil war in 1999," the statement said.

His father`s death only strengthened Kumar`s resolve to join the army at the age of 19. He is survived by his mother Shila Devi.

The mortal remains of the dead will be taken to their native places for their last rites.

"The army stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and remains committed to their dignity and well-being," it said.

Prime Minister, who was returning from a visit to Uttar Pradesh, paid his last respects to the martyrs at Delhi Airport.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid his tribute to martyred soldiers who lost their lives in encounters with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday.

Four Army men, including a Major, and an equal number of militants were on Tuesday killed while 8 other security personnel and a civilian were injured in two separate encounters in Kashmir's Handwara and Bandipora.

Major Satish Dahiya, Rifleman Ravi Kumar, Paratrooper Dharmender Kumar and Gunner Astosh Kumar lost their lives in the operation.

An encounter took place in Parray Mohalla of Hajin area of Bandipora district on Tuesday morning.

The gunbattle erupted after security forces cordoned off the area following information about presence of militants there, the police official said.

As the security forces were closing in, they came under fire from the hiding militants, the official said, adding 10 security personnel, including an officer, were injured in this.

CRPF Commanding Officer Chetan Kumar Cheetah, who was grievously injured in an encounter with militants in North Kashmir, underwent brain surgery on Wednesday even as he remains “critical”. According to AIIMS Trauma Centre sources, the officer is currently admitted to the ICU and underwent brain surgery. Doctors said the officer had fractures in the upper limb, head injuries and “maxillofacial” injury. He is under constant observation, they added.


45-year-old Cheetah was flown in an air ambulance from Srinagar on Tuesday from the military hospital where he was initially admitted after the encounter.

Hailing from Rajasthan, Cheetah bore the initial brunt of the attack in Hajjan area where a joint team of army, CRPF and state police had laid siege following intelligence inputs that two foreign terrorists were hiding in the area. Cheetah, who commands 45th Battalion of the CRPF, received gunshot wounds in his eye, hands, waist, and pelvic region, they added.

Major Satish Dahiya, who laid down his life while fighting militants in J&K’s Handwara district, was cremated with full state honours at his native village Banihari in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district.

Locals gathered in huge numbers to pay their final respects as Major Dahiya’s mortal remains were brought to his village in a helicopter at around 5.40 pm.

Major Dahiya had joined the Army in 2009 and was deployed with 30 Rashtriya Rifles. In the operation led by him, three militants were killed, while the officer was injured. He was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Major Dahiya is survived by his wife Sujata and two-and-a-half-year old daughter Priya.

In his condolence message, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar saluted the “extraordinary courage exhibited by the martyrs”.

Khattar said Major Satish Dahiya would continue to live in the hearts of the people of the state through his brave deeds. He added that the supreme sacrifice made by him had brought pride to the entire state and the country.

Major Dahiya’s uncle, Satpal Dahiya, while talking to The Indian Express, said: “He was the only son of his parents. We are sad about losing him. But he has laid down his life while protecting the country. We are proud of him.”

Major Dahiya had called his father Achal Singh before the encounter and said that he would call back after neutralising the militants.

Satpal informed that Mayor Dahiya had returned to J&K on January 7 after staying in the village for some days.

Haryana Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Santosh Yadav and MLAs Abhay Singh Yadav and Om Prakash Yadav along with officers of the district administration attended the slain officer’s cremation. Condoling his death, Haryana Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu said that youth of the country should take inspiration from brave soldiers like him.

Speaking on Chetan Cheetah, the security personnel injured in the Bandipora encounter, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on Friday said though his condition remains critical he is being treated by the best doctors. He said the government would extend every possible help to Cheetah. Earlier on Friday, AIIMS said that Cheetah was on the ventilator in a critical state and was responding to painful stimuli.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Saturday visited injured CRPF Commanding Officer Chetan Kumar Cheetah and enquired about his health at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi. Cheetah had sustained grievous injuries in an encounter with militants in North Kashmir on February 14, following which he was airlifted to AIIMS, where he is battling for life. General Rawat visited Cheetah in the afternoon and enquired about his health from the doctors attending on him, AIIMS sources said. On Friday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju visited the Centre to enquire about the condition of the injured CRPF officer.

Cheetah, the Commanding Officer of CRPF’s 45th battalion deployed in Kashmir valley, had received gunshot wounds in his eye, hands, waist and pelvic region and suffered a fracture in the hand, after the encounter with militants in Kashmir on Tuesday, CPRF officials said. His condition remained “critical” after which he was admitted to the premier hospital early this week, they said.

A CRPF personnel was killed at Zirakpur in a hit-and-run case late on Friday night. The victim was returning home on his bike when he was hit by a speeding truck. According to the police, victim Manish Kumar was going home on his motorcycle. When he reached near Shalimar hotel on Patiala road, a speeding truck hit him from the rear. He fell on the road and suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to a local private hospital where he was declared dead.

The investigation officer (IO) of the case, Gurmail Singh, said that the truck driver managed to escape after hitting Manish. They had registered a case of rash driving against an unknown person. The IO added that Manish was in his mid-30s. Manish’s brother-in-law Darshan Singh said that Manish had came to his village on leave and was returning home after meeting his relatives in Patiala. A passerby told them that Manish was hit by a truck.

A joint search team of Army and police was attacked by militants at Mulu Chitragam, 60 km south of Srinagar.


Three soldiers and a woman were killed and three Army men injured as militants ambushed a search and cordon team in Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday morning.

A Srinagar based police spokesman told The Hindu that a joint search team of the Army and police was attacked by the militants at Mulu Chitragam, Shopian, 60 km south of Srinagar, at 2 a.m.

“The attack resulted in injuries to six Army personnel, including two officers, of whom three died of their injuries,” said the police spokesman.

The Army personnel, who belonged to 44 Rashtriya Rifles, were returning from an operation at Kungnoo Shopian when the militants opened fire.

The police said a woman, identified as Taja, “was hit by a stray bullet inside her house in the crossfire” and died, said the spokesman.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat was accompanied by Northern Command Chief Lt General D Anbu and Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen J S Sandhu, paid tributes to the three soldiers killed in a militant attack in Shopian district of Kashmir yesterday.

He laid floral wreaths on the coffins carrying the mortal remains of the three soldiers, one of whom hailed from Marhama area of Anantnag district.

“As the entire nation salutes the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice in yesterday’s terrorist attack in Shopian, the army gave a befitting farewell to its brave hearts today in a solemn ceremony here,” the official said.

Rawat expressed grief and condolences to the families of Lance Naik Ghulam Mohi—Ud—Din, Sepoy Vikas Singh Gurjar and Sapper Sreejith M J.


“He also conveyed his anguish at the unfortunate death of an elderly lady, Taja Begum, in this terrorist attack,” the official added.

Wreaths were also laid on behalf of the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti by Minister of Rural development and Panchayati Raj Abdul Haq Khan, Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Nabi Lone and other officials from civil administration and security agencies.

The army chief had yesterday met the other injured soldiers at the Army Base Hospital and wished them speedy recovery.

The General also appreciated the various humanitarian initiatives undertaken by the troops to bring succor to common people and exhorted them to sustain this positive engagement with the local populace.
