Five soldiers, who were rescued after a snow sheath caved in on them in Kupwara’s Macchil sector, died of their wounds on Monday.

A Srinagar-based Army spokesman said they were shifted from Kupwara to an Army hospital in Srinagar “despite persistent poor weather conditions” for specialist medical care, but this did not help save their lives.

It was on January 28 that the five were trapped under snow for several hours after the pathway leading to their picket caved in.

It took one hour for the rescue team to pull them out of the snow sheath.

Since then they were being treated locally as they could not be airlifted by copters due to the inclement weather. Meanwhile, the bodies of 14 soldiers killed in twin avalanches in Bandipora’s Gurez sector, were flown in here. “The bodies will be taken to their native places on Tuesday for last rites,” said the spokesman.

The soldiers died between January 25 and 26 in Bandipora’s Gurez valley. The bodies remained stuck in the valley due to fresh snowfall.

A total of 26 people, including 20 soldiers, have died in avalanches in the Kashmir Valley since January 25.

New Delhi: The Army on Tuesday gave a befitting farewell to its 19 brave hearts, who had died in separate avalanches in the Gurez and Machhal sectors.

Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen JS Sandhu and all ranks paid rich tribute to the gallant soldiers who lost their lives while serving in the formidable heights along the Line of Control in two separate snow related incidents in North Kashmir.Fourteen soldiers were swept away in a devastating avalanche in Gurez on January 26 while five soldiers in Machhal, who had been rescued after they got trapped under snow when the track caved in on January 28, succumbed to their injuries yesterday.

The Indian Army had earlier said that bad weather was preventing the pilot from bringing back the remains of the soldiers killed in the avalanche.

The valley had been experiencing bad weather over a week due to some western disturbances, resulting in rescue operations being hampered.

In a show of solidarity, officials from other security agencies, including the JKP, CRPF, BSF and SSB also joined in paying their last respects to the martyrs.

The mortal remains of the soldiers are being taken to their native places where their last rites will be performed by family members.

Risking their lives through avalanche-prone snow covered mountains, an army man and his relatives hailing from a remote village in Karnah near the LoC in Kashmir, carried the body of his mother on their shoulders so that she could be laid to rest in her ancestral village.

Sakina Begum, mother of Mohammad Abbas, died on January 28 due to some heart-related complication at her son's official accomodation at Pathankot where he is serving in the Army.

The next day Abbas managed to get the body of his mother to Chowkibal in Kupwara district on way to his native village in Karnah, which is cut off from rest of the world due to massive accumulation of snow.

Abbas approached the District Administration of Kupwara for arranging a helicopter so that he could take his mother's body back home so that she could be laid to rest.

For five days, he waited but inclement weather did not allow operation of choppers in the area where intermittent snowfall was going on. Finally, with the support of few relatives and villagemen, the soldier yesterday decided to trek the distance of 50 kilometres through snow-bound mountains over Sadhna Top with the body of his mother lugged over four shoulders.

The district administration officials said they had made all efforts to arrange a chopper for carrying the body of the woman to Karnah and it could be made possible only yesterday.

They said by the time a chopper was arranged, the relatives of the deceased had set off for the journey by foot. A defence spokesman said the army had provided all assistance for transportation of mortal remains of the mother of the soldier.

"All assistance for transportation of mortal remains of mother of the soldier, keeping the weather and snow conditions in mind, was made available by the unit of the jawans as well as by other army units en route," Defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said.

Kulgam: In a major breakthrough, four militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were gunned down in a pre-dawn swoop by security forces at a village in South Kashmir, in which two armymen and a civilian also lost their lives.

Acting on a tip-off of Jammu and Kashmir Police, a cordon was thrown around Nagabal Village in Frisal, about 70 kms south of Srinagar by the army, police and para-military forces at around 4.30 am, official sources said.

They said the intelligence input was clear that militants were hiding in a house in the village following which a cordon was thrown around the locality so that no militant escaped.

A repeated check on all the houses yielded no success but the police personnel accompanying the raiding party insisted on a rechecking a house where the intelligence input had suggested about the presence of the militants.

The personnel from One Rashtriya Rifles, which forms part of the Victor Force counter-insurgency grid of army in South Kashmir, and Special Operation Group of State police again carried out a search inside the house and located a false ceiling where the militants were hiding.

On being spotted, the troops, who were accompanied by the house owners, came under heavy fire in which two jawans identified as Lance Naik Raghuvir Singh and Lance Naik Gopal Singh Badoria got killed.

In the gun battle thereafter, three militants managed to escape in the nearby jungles while four other militants belonging to banned Hizbul Mujahideen outfit were killed.

Director General of Police S P Vaid told PTI that security forces had achieved a major success by gunning down four militants.

"However, it's unfortunate that two soldiers were martyred and son of the house owner got caught in the cross-fire and succumbed to his injuries," he said.

Out of the four militants, three have been identified as Mudasir Ahmed Tantray, Farooq Ahmed Dar and Azhar Ahmed. Effort was on to identify the fourth one.
