Asaram Bapu's men threatened, tried to bribe cops: Rajasthan police | NDTV.com

Asaram_PTI.JPG

Jodhpur: Supporters of religious preacher Asaram Bapu - under investigation for charges of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl in one of his ashrams - have tried to bribe and threaten cops, the Rajasthan police have said.

The Jodhpur police told a court that Deputy Commissioner of Police AP Lamba, who is leading the probe into a 16-year-old's allegation that the spiritual leader sexually assaulted her in one of his ashrams, had received a threatening letter on Tuesday.

The letter was allegedly faxed from Uttar Pradesh.

"Yes, our DCP was threatened," Assistant Commissioner of Police Chanchal Mishra told reporters, and confirmed an attempt to bribe the police team before they arrested Asaram Bapu from his Indore ashram on Saturday.

DCP Lamba had publicly said that the police had sufficient evidence against the guru and had corroborated the statement of the girl.

Asaram Bapu, who was sent to 14-day judicial custody, has been jailed in the Jodhpur Central prison. The 75-year-old has pleaded for bail on grounds that he is "unwell", but the court today reserved its decision.

Sources say the self-styled godman has insisted on food from his ashram and has refused to drink any water without adding drops from his bottle of 'gangajal' or holy Ganga water.

The police say Asaram Bapu had "lied" about being unwell as doctors had found him medically fit. The cops also said he had cleared a "potency test", indicating he was capable of sexual assault.

The spiritual leader, who teaches yoga and meditation, denies that he spent nearly an hour alone with the teen complainant at his ashram in Jodhpur. He told the police that he met the girl and her family as part of the massive crowd that gathered for his 'satsang' or religious discourse on August 15.

The strong point of stupidity is that its persistant. That applies to asaram supporters and the false flagged poster who posts different threads on the same topic.

Did Asaram Bapu's aides supply him girls and women? - News Oneindia

New Delhi, Sept 4: It seems that more trouble is brewing for 72-year-old arrested self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. In a shocking revelation, it has been reported that Asaram's caretaker Shiva (who was with him at Manai ashram in Jodhpur on the day of incident) and the Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara gurukul hostel warden Shilpi played an important role behind Asaram's charges of allegedly assaulting many other girls.

Shiva, a key witness in the alleged sexual assault case, is cooling his heels behind bars as he was remanded to one-day police custody after he was produced in the district and sessions court in Jodhpur yesterday evening. Shipi, an another accused is reportedly absconding since she came under the police radar. Meanwhile, Jodhpur police has formed a team to search her whereabouts.

According to police officials, "Shilpi and Keshav (another hostel attendant) had scared the girl's parents that she was possessed by an evil spirit and they should take her to Asaram for some religious rituals. On their advice, the girl's parents took her to Jodhpur ashram where Asaram is accused of sexually assaulting her on the night of August 15." Shiva was outside the room when the girl was assaulted and he had threatened her against disclosing the incident to anyone.

Another startling revelation that has been published in a website says that Shilpi used to send many girls and women to Asaram (where he allegedly had fun with them) on a regular basis while Shiva used to stand as a guard outside his ashram.

During police investigations, if reports are to believed, it has come to the fore that Shilpi also had physical relations with Asaram from last many years. In return to that, Asaram reportedly gifted her two flats each in Delhi and Ahmedabad. An official, on the condition of anonymity said that in the coming days, more such disclosures will come in front of public.

All these revelations, whether they are true or not, have definitely given a huge shock to his followers and disciples. Meanwhile, it has been reported that victim's family has got threats to withdraw their demand for the CBI probe into the sexual assault case. Despite his political clout and massive followers, Asaram's bail plea has been rejected. Here's taking a look at some of more alleged revelations at the Asaram:

`Asaram used to meet women alone after 8 pm`

New Delhi: In a sensational revelation which may cause further trouble to Asaram Bapu in the sexual assault case, the spiritual leader's personal caretaker has revealed that the self-styled godman used to meet women alone.

“Asaram does meet women alone after 8 pm,” Shiva has reportedly told police.

Asaram Bapu has hogged the limelight after a 16-year-old girl accused him of sexually assaulting her in his ashram on August 15.

The disclosure by Asaram's caretaker Shiva, who has been in custody for a few days now, may tilt the case against the controversial guru, who has denied the rape accusations against him.

Shiva’s revelation also somewhat backs the claim made by Amrut Prajapati, who worked as a technical officer of the Ayurvedic division at Motera ashram for 12 long years, but later resigned to start practice at his own clinic at Odhav as an Ayurvedic doctor.

As per Prajapati, Asaram has built three ashrams all over India for women, who are like his "keeps".

“One day, I was allowed to see him (Asaram) inside his private room, as he was severely ill. Since the guards knew me well, I went straight to his room and found Asaram in a compromising position with a 25-year-old girl, who used to stay in the ashram. This was the turning point for me,” said Prajapati.

Asaram, who was arrested from his ashram in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has sought bail claiming that police erred in booking him under rape charges, which is non-bailable.

Another godman Tunna baba has been arrested.

Another MP godman held for raping woman - Hindustan Times

Just days after the Asaram Bapu scandal rocked the nation, another self-styled godman in Madhya Pradesh is in the dock.

On Tuesday, police arrested 65-year-old Mahendra Giri alias Tunnu Baba for illegally confining and raping a 24-yearold woman at his ashram in Neelkanth village of Sehore district for over four months.

The victim’s husband and mother-inlaw, who also lived at the ashram, assisted Giri in the crime.

Manu and her son Vishram Banjara lived with Giri. Banjara got married to a woman from Khategaon on May 3. Soon after, Giri started sexually assaulting Banjara’s wife.

The victim said she would be beaten up and abused by all three if she opposed the treatment meted out to her.

On August 30, when the woman’s younger sister tried to meet her, she faced resistance from Banjara and her mother. Suspecting foul play, the sister approached Nasrullaganj police and lodged a complaint.

Subsequently, the police raided Giri’s ashram and recovered the woman. The police have registered a case against Giri under Sections 376(d), 342 and 506 of IPC and he has been arrested along with the victim’s husband and mother-in-law.

His virility stunned the medical team.

JODHPUR: The virility of the controversial 72-year-old godman Asaram Bapu surprised the team of three doctors who conducted a potency test on him after he agreed to be subjected to it.

Ahmedabad: In a starling accusation, a former close aide of self-styled godman Asaram claims the controversial spiritual guru has built three ashrams across India for women, who are no more than his "keep".

“Apart from these, he also keeps many women in separate rooms built in each ashram. Though old, Asaram needs young girls in the age group of 15 to 25 daily. He may not touch the same woman for a year, as he needs a new girl every time,” says Amrut Prajapati, who worked as a technical officer of the Ayurvedic division at Asaram's Motera ashram for 12 long years.

Prajapati further claimed that women are killed if they try to resist the godman’s advances. “These women were then shown to have committed suicide. There must be an inquiry on how many men or women have committed suicides in his ashrams or how many dead bodies were found in the river behind his Motera ashram,” alleged Prajapati.

Sex, rape, paedophile, brothel house: Godman or conman? - daily.bhaskar.com

New Delhi: With the arrest of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu by Jodhpur police, a new chapter of controversy has been added in the book of so-called babas and religious gurus who stated their sainthood with a criminal background.

Health, well-being and spirituality are what they all profess, but ultimately many of the so-called religious gurus have ended with controversy they create, like financial irregularities, sexual abuse and, sometimes, even murder.

The modern-day babas would employ selfish means to fulfill their wants and this often leads to controversy associated with the spiritual leaders and their task.

Here are the names of most controversial spiritual leaders/gurus.

9187_chandraswamy.jpg

Chandraswami Baba

Nemi Chand Jain, alias Chandraswami, claimed to be a psychic, an astrologer and a faith healer. He was known to have built a wide network of powerful friends.

His knowledge of their private lives and business dealings made him one of the country's top power brokers. The MC Jain commission report in 1998 dedicated an entire volume to his alleged involvement in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination; an income-tax raid on his ashram reportedly uncovered original drafts of payments totalling $11 million to arms dealer, Adnan Khashoggi. His foreign travel bill, before he was grounded, was reportedly estimated to be Rs. 1.05 crore.

The ED had registered as many as nine FERA cases and the CBI has lodged a cheating case and a case for his involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1996. Although recently exonerated by courts on charges of forgery and criminal conspiracy against a Rajiv Gandhi, his lifestyle is often seen as epitomizing the dark side of organized religion and its flirtation with activities that render it suspect before law and society.

He was Narsimha Rao’s spiritual adviser, political fixer and close friend for 25 years. When Rao became PM, Chandraswami constructed his palatial ashram which the Supreme Court has valued at Rs. 2.28 crore.

Swami Nithyananda

The controversial southern godman Swami Nithyananda has been embroiled in sex-related controversies. The self-styled godman courted controversy in 2010 after a TV news channel telecast sleazy video clippings purportedly showing him in a sex romp with a Tamil actress.
Following the scandal, Nithyananda remained elusive for a month and was arrested from Solan district in Himachal Pradesh on April 21 in 2010. He was later released on bail.

The godman landed in a fresh storm in 2012 after a US-based woman alleged that she was abused by Nithyananda for five years.

Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was charged by CBI in a rape case.

The Dera chief had been charged with sexually assaulting women followers of the Dera at the sect’s Sirsa-based headquarters.

He had been booked under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC. The CBI is also investigating two more charges against him for his alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy against Dera manager Ranjit Singh and a Sirsa-based journalist, Ram Chander Chatterpatti.

9188_jayendra_saraswathi.jpg

Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati

The 60-year-old pontiff of the Kanchi Matth, Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati was arrested from Hyderabad in November 2004 in connection with a murder case.

Saraswathi was considered the prime accused in the murder of Sankararaman, a manager of the Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram. He was killed on September 3, 2004 when five men stabbed him to death in the Devarajasami temple.

The media reports suggested that his murder was carried out on the direction of Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswati.

Prakashanand Saraswati

Prakashanand Saraswati, the founder of the Barsana Dham Centre in Texas in 1990, was released on a $1 million bail in April 2008. Saraswati was indicted on 20 counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact between 1993 and 1996.

His temple was one of the biggest Hindu temples in the US. He was arrested on 24 April 2008 at the Washington Dulles International Airport, after he arrived on a flight from Europe, where he had been receiving treatment.

As of March, 2011 news, he was absconding and has been sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined USD 10,000 on each of 20 felony counts for groping girls.

9191_swami_amrit_chaitnya.jpg

Swami Amrit Chaitnya

Self-styled godman Swami Amrit Chaitanya landed in controversy when he was arrested in 2008 for raping minor girls and cheating an NRI woman.

A Kerala court had convicted Santosh Madhavan alias Swami Amrit Chaitanya, on charges including cheating his devotees of money and raping four minor girls.

9193_swami_bhimanand.jpg

Sant Swami Bhimanand

Shiv Murat Dwivedi alias Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj Chitrakoot Wale is another self-styled godman who was in news for his unholy acts.

He is alleged to have earned crores of rupees through the sex racket and is accused of running a website for flesh trade. Dwivedi was arrested with two air hostesses on February 25, 2010 for running a prostitution racket for 10 years in Delhi.

He was booked under stringent MCOCA for flesh trade on March 9, the same year.

Professed to be a devotee of Satya Sai Baba, this self-styled godman landed in prostitution racket in quest for quick riches and had earned properties and wealth running into crores of rupees. Bhimanand has been filmed doing the 'naagin dance', seemingly drunk, to the tune of the famous snake song.

9194_swami_premananda.jpg

Swami Premananda

Controversial Swami Premananda of Premananda Ashram, Tiruchirapally in Tamil Nadu was sentenced to life imprisonment for various criminal cases including rape and murder.

Premananda alias Premkumar alias Ravi was charged of raping 13 inmates, molesting two and murdering Ravi, an engineer, in the ashram in 1994. In 2005, the Supreme Court sentenced him to life sentence for two consecutive terms. He died in February 2011 due to illness.

9195_swami_sadachari.jpg

Swami Sadachari

Swami Sadachari, once spiritual advisor and tantric of many top politicians including Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister, has been in jail for running a brothel.

The once-influential godman, who is believed to have performed rituals at a prime minister’s residence, was nabbed only when he fell out of favour with those in power.

Actually Enemy did us a favor by putting up those examples.

In the above example there are 3 cases where the Swami was arrested, harassed and attacked just because they were Hindu / Dharmic religious figures.

1. Swami Nithyananda had consensual sex with Actress Ranjitha, both of them adults above the age of 30 !

His is a classic case where he was tracked and arrested for consensual sex !!!!! If this was the US, the govt. would probably have to pay compensation to him and the official dismissed from service for this unlawful act.

He was taught and practiced Ashtanga Yoga since he was 4 years old. He took sanyas and left home after his diploma at the age of 17 years in search of something more.

Nithyananda_Biography.jpg

In Dec 2012, Sun TV's former COO Mr. Saxena issued a statement to the press stating that the Nithyananda scandal was a blackmail attempt by Sun TV editor Mr. Raja. In March 2013, Mr. Raja himself was arrested for workplace sexual harassment of female employee.

Nithyananda may be guilty of unethical behavior but not of unlawful activity.

He was arrested and spent 55 days in jail for having consensual sex !!! that was his 'crime' ! How much more absurd can it get ?

Worst than can be said is he reverted back to GrihasthAshram from Sanyas. How is that a crime ? ...there are thousands of examples of people who revert back to GrihasthAshram and joined back into society.

His real 'CRIME' seems to be of being a Hindu Spiritual teacher and not behaving to the expectations of others. Only in India can this absurd expectation be given legal and political cover.

The other two are the false case against Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

2. Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati victimization is well know to Hindus so no need to explain that here now. Even the Supreme Court has said there is no case against him. His actual 'CRIME' again seems to be a Hindu religious leader. He is the head one of the Char Dham or 4 seats of Hinduism, set by by Adi Shankaracharya. The most accomplished and respected Head of all the 4 dhams.

3. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh seems to be a victim of orthodox Sikh fanaticals.

In 2007, Singh was accused of hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikhs, and of involvement in murder. He was cleared of both the charges by the courts, and maintains that he holds all religions including Sikhism in the highest esteem. His followers have alleged harassment and persecution at the hand of the radicals. He has attracted criticism for his high security cavalcade, while his organisation has held that high security threat perception as the reason for the measures. Several times, terrorists of Khalistan Zindabad Force, Khalistan Liberation Force and Iknoor Khalsa Fauj planning to assassinate him have been arrested with a large cache of ammunition.

The radical Sikh groups (such as Dal Khalsa) and political parties (such as Shiromani Akali Dal) have been opposed to the Deras, seeing in them a threat to gurdwaras. In May 2007, a section of orthodox Sikhs stated that Singh's attire in an advertisement resembled that of the tenth Sikh guru Gobind Singh. They accused him of blasphemy and of hurting Sikh sentiments. The controversy was followed by multiple attacks on the Dera members. Gurmeet Singh was himself attacked by a mob on 16 July 2007, but escaped unhurt.

A criminal case filed against Gurmeet Singh, for hurting the Sikh sentiments, was dismissed by the Sirsa court in 2009. Ajai Sahni has stated that the tensions between the Sikh community and the Dera have been exploited by the pro-Khalistan elements. He has further quoted Indian military intelligence that Iknoor Khalsa Fauj, Khalistan Zindabad Force and Khalistan Commando Force have liaised closely with ISI to eliminate Singh, On 2 February 2008, Gurmeet Singh's cavalcade was attacked, injuring 11 persons. A Khalistan Liberation Force militant Bakshish Singh was later arrested for the attack.

In 2002 Gurmeet Singh and his Dera came under investigation in connection with the charges of sexual exploitation of women followers of the sect, and the murder of a journalist Ram Chander Chatrapati after an anonymous letter alleging sexual exploitation was addressed to the Prime Minister and its copies had been marked to several other bodies.

In the High court, his counsel questioned the bona fides of the investigating agency and alleged that the witnesses were "purchased" to falsely implicate Singh. This version was refuted by the opposing counsel. But the High Court granted him bail in these cases after extensive arguments. This was subsequently extended by the trial court. Finally, the bail was upheld by the Supreme Court of India.

In 2010, a special CBI court cleared Gurmeet Singh of any involvement in the murder of the former Dera chief's driver Faqir Chand.

His actual 'CRIME' seems to be offering a parallel cult to that of other Sikhs. Some thing similar to what 'sai baba' did, or every other 'prophet' in this world.

Even with people getting educated, a large section of our society still believes in these DHONGI Babas. If one sees rationaly, these chaps are nothing more than cheats and bussinessmen who create their cult on a false hype.
Whats most disturbing is political class supporting them in public and thereby cerating an image of them being above the law.

I, for one would want Law to take most severe action this time around to set a stern example for other imposters as well.

Snakara charya the guy lost his way - i know more about his acts than anyone here - and he did murder that guy - a little bird told me the judge got bribed handsomely to let this crook walk away .

The word 'BABA' is originally a Farsi word for 'Father'. In India it has come to denote a 'Father Figure'. So if others looks up to someone as a "Father Figure" how does he become a "Dhongi" ?

You whole premise itself is illogical and irrational. It is you who need to look at the whole situation 'Rationally'.

Some of 'these' chaps maybe cheats or businessmen, but when did becoming a businessman in India become a crime ?

Religion is one of the Oldest "Business" in the world. That is how ALL religious order in this world become RICH. Just look up 'Roman Church' and its Budget which is in BILLIONS of $ or even Agha Khan who has Billions of $. I could go on, but you get the point.

In other nations they are above the law, but in India only Christian and Muslim Priest's are above the law. Hindu religious leaders right from VHP to Shankaracharya is very much Oppressed by the Law.

Paedophile Priest 'Exposes Satanic Vatican Rent-Boy Sex Ring'

Jesus wept

When water started trickling down a statue of Jesus Christ at a Catholic church in Mumbai earlier this year, locals were quick to declare a miracle. Some began collecting the holy water and the Church of Our Lady of Velankanni began to promote it as a site of pilgrimage.

So when Sanal Edamaruku arrived and established that this was not holy water so much as holey plumbing, the backlash was severe. The renowned rationalist was accused of blasphemy, charged with offences that carry a three-year prison sentence and eventually, after receiving death threats, had to seek exile in Finland.

Now he is calling for European governments to press Delhi into dropping the case. And on the first leg of a tour around EU capitals on Friday, he warned that India was sacrificing freedom of expression for outdated, colonial-era rules about blasphemy.

"There is a huge contradiction in the content of the Indian constitution which guarantees freedom of speech and the blasphemy law from 1860 under then colonial rule," Edamaruku told the Guardian in an interview in Dublin.

"This blasphemy law can affect anyone in India – even a girl recently who wrote on Facebook against closing down a city because of the death of a famous local politician. She was prosecuted under the blasphemy law and another girl who 'liked' her comment on Facebook was also arrested and then charged with blasphemy."

Edamaruku, who has the support of rationalists and atheists such as Richard Dawkins, is well known in India for debunking religious myths, and was already unpopular among Indian Catholics for publicly criticising Mother Teresa's legacy in Kolkata.

When the state "miracle" was pronounced, he went to Mumbai and found that the dripping water was due to clogged drainage pipes behind the wall where it stood. His revelation provoked death threats from religious zealots and ultimately charges of blasphemy under the Indian penal code in the Mumbai high court.

"India cannot criticise Pakistan for arresting young girls for blaspheming against Islam while it arrests and locks up its own citizens for breaking our country's blasphemy laws," he said. "It is an absurd law but also extremely dangerous because it gives fanatics, whether they are Hindus, Catholics or Muslims, a licence to be offended. It also allows people who are in dispute with you to make up false accusations of blasphemy."

Edamaruku said his exposure of the weeping statue was also a contribution to public health in Mumbai as some believers were drinking the water hoping it could cure ailments. "This was sewage water seeping through a wall due to faulty plumbing," he said. "It posed a health risk to people who were fooled into believing it was a miracle."

He has been living in Finland since the summer. He was in Europe on a lecture tour in July when his partner rang to say the police had arrived at his flat. "I felt really upset because under the blasphemy law you cannot get bail until the court case begins. I would be in jail now if I had been at my apartment in Delhi," he said.

He has spurned an offer from a senior Indian Catholic bishop to apologise for the exposure of the "miracle".

"The Catholic archbishop of Bombay, Oswald, Cardinal Gracias, has said that if I apologise for the 'offence' I have caused he will see to it that the charges are dropped. This shows that he has influence in the situation but he will not use it unless I apologise, which I will not do as I have done nothing wrong," he said.

"In a way I am lucky because I have friends and supporters in Europe. I am well known in India and have the telephone numbers of at least five Indian cabinet ministers. And I have some means of fighting back. But what would happen to the common man or woman if they were accused of blasphemy? They would be sent straight to jail without any chance of bail," he said.

Edamaruku asked for "mounting international pressure", particularly from Ireland and other EU nations, on the Indian government. Delhi had the power to halt the prosecution before a court case, citing a lack of evidence to pursue it, he said.

Mick Nugent, from Atheist Ireland, the organisation hosting the Indian's visit to the republic and Northern Ireland next week, said Edamaruku's plight also underlined the need for Dublin's Fine Gael-Labour government to repeal Ireland's blasphemy law.

"Blasphemy laws are very strange because they can be both very silly and also very sinister. They are very silly because you are talking about crying statues and moving statues or Virgin Marys appearing in tree stumps in Co Limerick. But on the other hand these type of laws are used in Islamic countries to jail people or sentence them to death. Or in Sanal's case facing a jail sentence for his work exposing bogus miracles.

"The Irish government should pay attention to Sanal's case and realise they must get rid of this absurd and dangerous law. Because we shouldn't be so smug in Ireland. After all, we have had the hysteria about moving statues and a man bringing people to a shrine in Co Mayo so they can look at the sun and see the Virgin Mary."
