Looks like this family is also a target as they spent (I know about Eid-ul-fitr) in Islamabad rather than in Swat.

ISLAMABAD, Jan 3: Troops captured 52 suspected militants, including a commander, on Thursday in the restive valley of Swat, the military said.

The arrests were made days after a remote-controlled bomb killed eight people, including a politician from the main party backing President Pervez Musharraf in Swat.

“These militants were apprehended in Shakardara area on Thursday morning during a search operation,” the statement said.

According to government reports, more than 300 Taliban-style militants have been killed in the area since Musharraf deployed the army against them on Nov 24.

The militants had seized control of the region and called for the enforcement of Sharia law.

The army claimed on Dec 8 it had cleared almost all the militants from the mountainous region.

According to a press release of Media Information Centre, Mingora commander Ikramuddin was involved in the beheading of police officials.

Huge quantity of arms and ammunition have also been seized which included Kalashnikovs, rifles, pistols and rounds of different calibre.

Forces close in on militant strongholds in Swat

By our correspondent

MINGORA: The security forces on Sunday moved towards the strongholds of militants after gaining control of several areas which were earlier considered as their hideouts.

After their arrival, the security forces set up checkpoints in Chuprial, Wenaipul and Shangwatai towns. A spokesperson for the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in Swat Colonel Mohammad Nadeem told The News that forces in a convoy of 100 vehicles started moving towards Gat Peochar and Shawar, the suspected strongholds of rebel cleric Maulana Fazlullah-led militants. He said the armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and engineers accompanied the advancing troops.

The forces took complete control of Nazarabad, Jurra, Shangwatai, Irkot, Ronyal, Saich Barn and Wenaipul while advancing on Chuprial. Moving from Matta subdivision, they brought under control Khareri, Shakardara, Tet Barni and Seen Pora.

It was learnt that after establishing the checkpoints, the forces were readying for launching another search operation. The ISPR spokesperson claimed the residents of the areas extended a warm welcome to the troops by raising slogans for Pakistan and the Army.

He said that elders from the above-mentioned areas had met the military authorities and assured them of their full cooperation and requested them to turn to these parts of the restive Swat valley.

The areas were under the control of the militants who had set on fire the house and hujra of a former NWFP minister Shujaat Ali Khan and his son, Jamal Nasir Khan, who is the district Nazim Swat. They had also taken away the arms and valuables. The district Nazim and his family had already shifted to Islamabad after an alleged suicide attempt on their lives in Swat a few months back.

Meanwhile, independent sources said that the security forces pounded the suspected

militant hideouts on Sunday, inflicting heavy human and material losses on the combatants. Military officials were, however, unaware of any losses suffered by the militants in the action by the security forces.

The curfew was relaxed in several parts of the troubled valley on Sunday from 7 am to 6 pm. There was, however, no relaxation for the people of Kabal and Matta subdivisions, multiplying their problems.

In another development, the law-enforcement agencies arrested some 15 suspected militants on the Ayub Bridge and other checkpoints and shifted them to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

Some of them were identified as Muhammad Nabi, Irshad Ahmad, Ayaz, Munib Fazal who, along with three other suspected militants, were travelling in a Land Cruiser. There were also reports that a serving lieutenant of the Pakistan Army was travelling with these suspected militants in the red colour Land Cruiser when held by the security personnel on the Ayub Bridge.

A senior military official, while requesting anonymity, told The News that the lieutenant was later released. However, top military spokesman, Maj Gen Waheed Arshad, who is also the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), when reached by telephone said he was not aware of any such report.

“The security forces are now in control of Peochar and Namal areas, which were considered as militant hideouts and have set up checkpoints there,” he said. Meanwhile, the residents condemned the killing of innocent people in Galoch village in Kabal Tehsil on Saturday in military action and demanded of the higher authorities to take note of the incident and order a high-level inquiry into such happenings.

Operation in Swat wrapped up: DGMO

ISLAMABAD: Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Pakistan Army Major General Ahmed Shuja Pasha Wednesday said that operation "Rah-e-Haq" in Swat to re-establish the writ of the government and clean the area from miscreants has been successfully accomplished.

Giving a detailed briefing on the subject at the General Headquarters, the DGMO said during the operation, spread over around three months, 36 security personnel and 9 civilians were killed. More than 615 miscreants were arrested while over 100 of them were still under investigations while the rest have been released, Pasha said.

He said ten notorious miscreants including close allies of Maulana Fazalullah identified as Fazale Ahad (brother of Fazalullah), Liaqat, Fazalur Rehman, Mahboobur Rehman, Iqbal Khan, Inamur Rehman, Waheed Khan and Maulana Shakoor had been killed during the operation.

"Pakistan Army troops have pushed out the miscreants from the Swat valley to an adjoining isolated area having mountain peaks fully covered with snow," he said. Maj Gen Pasha said during the operation an utmost care had been exercised by the troops to avoid any collateral damage to the life, due to the dense population in the area. He said that the law and order situation in the area had arisen back in 1990 and due to slackness in matching attention to the problem in the past it kept rising.

He said the situation had worsened to the level that the police stations and civil administration were simply non-existent as the police stations were under the complete command of Taliban. The local populace was being subjected to brutal tortures and killings. Seeing the worst situation, the provincial government of NWFP requested Pakistan Army to deploy troops in the area which successfully carried out operation.

Answering a question, he said the lasting peace in the area could be achieved through steps to empower the civil administration and police which may keep strict vigil on law and order. He pointed out that the trends of miscreants could be checked with the help of people who should stop their support besides paying them donations.

He said that the affected people are presently being provided relief by the troops under "Quick Impact Project" costing Rs1 billion while a compensation package for them has also been recommended. He said the injured in the area were provided free medical care while the families of the deceased were also given proper care and attention.

He said the local populace is extending all cooperation to the troops as they had welcomed them with open arms and took a sigh of relief seeing their presence in the area. He said the confidence of miscreants has been badly shattered.

The DGMO said election activity in the area is visibly seen while 12 FM stations have re-started their transmissions. He said the pullout plan of troops from the area would be considered in the due course of time.

He said to launch operation in the area was the most difficult decision to be implemented, however, it was initiated to check the curse. He thanked the media for their pragmatic and optimistic reporting of the happenings. However, he was critical about some specific TV channels for showing bloody scenes and bodies of the dead on the screen. He said: "As a common citizen of the country I want to ask the TV channels that what service are they extending to the society by showing such gory scenes."

Answering to a question, he said that Baitullah Mahsud had been hiding in some hideout in Waziristan and some reports have revealed that he is critically ill. The DGMO stated in firm tone that no foreign force would be allowed to carry out operation in Pakistan.

He said that 17,000 troops of the army have been deployed to maintain law and order in sensitive parts of the country during Muharram. The troops deployed in the four provinces would assist the civil administration to maintain law and order and would be active in case the police or civil administration fails to control the situation, he said.

Pasha said that a total of 159 companies of Pakistan Army have been deployed in 29 districts of the Punjab, 11 districts of Sindh, seven districts of the NWFP and one district of Balochistan. He said that in addition to the army troops, 54 companies of Rangers and Frontier Corps have also been engaged in these sensitive districts of the four provinces.

He said that this year the employment of troops in the NWFP has been increased as compared to the last year. During 2007, he said 97 companies of the army were employed during Muharram.

I came across this interesting backgrounder.

Swat:

The Swat valley is a wildly beautiful valley, often called “the Switzerland of Asia” for its natural beauty and until the mid-16th century, remained a Buddhist stronghold, with many Buddhist shrines and statues remaining and now under threat from Islamist iconoclasty. Then, the Yousoufzai (or Yusufzai) tribe of Afghan Pashtuns moved into the district and took over in a predatory migration. Under the Yousoufzai, Swat was very insular until the British suppressed an Islamist uprising in 1897 and did not allow foreign penetration until recent years, when it became a major tourist attraction, even home to a modern ski resort.

Swat is geographically well removed from the main theaters of combat between Taliban-AQ and both the NATO forces in Afghanistan and Pakistani Army and PFC forces. It remained a burgeoning tourist attraction and agricultural garden spot until the great earthquake of October 2005 and is mired in slow reconstruction efforts ever since.

The Rival Dynasties:

The attempt by Fazlullah’s TNSM movement to supplant the traditional Swati secular and religious order with his radical vision of Sharia, is a classic example of the long-running rivalry between the secular tribal order in Islam, and radical preachers, who come along periodically among the Arabs, Pashtuns and other peoples of the middle east and South Asia. Waziristan has had four such waves of religious extremisim since 1895, while Swat has experienced waves in 1829-31, 1857-63 and the present crisis. In Swat, Fazlullah is boldly challenging the more traditional Islam as espoused by two local saints, the Pir Baba and the Akhund.

The Tirmizi dynasty descends from the famous Swati holy man, the Pir Baba (born AD 1506), whose given name was Sayyid Ali Tirmizi. Through his line (often referred to as the Sitana or Sethana Sayyids after their home fortress-town), his descendants were recognized as the rightful princes of Swat until 1863 when a crisis over a colony of transplanted Jihadists, the “Hindustani Fanatics,” aligned with the Tirmizis since 1829, precipitated a British incursion in 1863.

There's more to the 1829-31 events: a prominent outsider, Sayyid Ahmad Shah raised about 1000 "Hindustani Fanatics" and allied with the Yousoufzai to fend of the Sikh army of Ranjit Singh, which was attempting a conquest of the Pashtuns. They settled into Swat as allies of the Tarmazi. Then Ahmad Shah got grandiose before his death in battle in late 1830, even issuing coinage with his image. In Swat, he demanded brides for his followers among other things and settled some "agents" in some villages in the valley and the locals took great offense. A beacon fire was lit on the Hill of Karamar in Jan. 1831 which signaled the villagers to kill all the agents in their sleep[iv]. But the main colony of the Hindustani Fanatics continued on and began to fester again after the Sepoy Muntiny of 1857 and remind one, very much of this present threat from fanatics allied with Taliban (below).

In the past, the Yousoufzai of Swat have demonstrated staying power and determination in resisting invasion against the Moghul Empire, Sikhs and British. In 1863, when the British attempted to enter Swat to eliminate the Jihadist colony, the Yousoufzai fiercely resisted the incursion at Ambela Pass from Oct. 20 to Dec. 17, 1863 (the “Ambela Jihad”), before Akhund Abdul Ghafar, the saintly Akhund Sahib (“teacher” 1784-1877) negotiated a deal where the Swatis would eliminate the colony with British observers accompanying them as witnesses. This deal also led to the Akhund replacing the Tirmizis (who had sponsored the Hindustani Fanatics) as the recognized ruler of Swat and the Akhund soon instituted his vision of Sharia law among the Yousoufzai in a way that did not conflict with their Pashtunwali code of honor.

When the princely state of Swat was recognized by the British in 1915, Sayyid Muhammad Abdul-Jabbar Shah of the Tirmizi line briefly ruled until ousted in September 1917 by supporters of the line of Abdul Ghafar. Abdul Ghafar’s grandson Miangul Gollshahzada Abdul-Wadud, and great grandson Miangul Abdul-Haqq Jahanzab then ruled a peaceful Swat until the princely state was abolished by the Pakistani government in 1969.

Thus both the Tirmizi dynasty and the Akhund’s descendants have both religious and secular credibility among the Yousoufzai of Swat and could be part of a consensus proclamation (a Fatwa) from a Swati Jirga designed to counter Maulana Fazlullah’s extremist vision of Sharia, Taliban-style.

Swat Today:

With the recovery of Taliban in the FATA region after their unseating in Kabul in 2001, a local radical cleric asserted himself in a northwestern Swat mountain valley tributary to the principal Swat River Valley at the village of Imam Dheri. First, Sufi Muhammad preached Taliban Islam and sent thousands of Swati volunteers to fight for Taliban in Afghanistan under his organization, TNSM. When he was arrested in 2002 for this activity, his young son-in-law (then 23, now 28) Maulana[v] Fazlullah took command, declared an Islamic Emirate, and as of this writing, has built a force of well-armed but only partly-trained radicals, taking over control of some 59 mountain valley villages.

In the Swat District of Pakistan (population of 1.5 million), Maulana Fazlullah has arrogantly declared himself Emir of a pro-Taliban Islamic Emirate and gathered some 4000-4500 well-armed and partially trained followers to his banner and carved out an enclave encompassing some 59 villages. Reports indicate that some 800 of these gunmen are “foreigners.” In the current crisis, Fazlullah’s insurrection has also spread into the neighboring Dir district to the west and Malakand district, to the south.

With modern AK-47s, mortars, machine guns and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) the TNSM force is better armed than the Pakistani Frontier Corps, a paramilitary organization drawn from the Pashtun Tribes and tasked with maintaining security in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) (pop. 19.4 mil) and neighboring Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) (pop. 3.3 million).[vi] As almost always with turmoil in Islamic lands, Fazlullah is offering an ascetic religious order (regular or temporal) as the alternative to the normal secular leadership of the tribes (the sheiks or Khans). But the offer comes at the point of a gun. As always, the secular leadership will eventually prevail, but not without strong and disciplined help from outside the tribal areas.

Then, between Nov 3-13, Fazlullah’s forces seized control of seven of Swat’s eight major municipalities by overrunning the local police stations and PFC security detachments. It also came out that early in the offensive Fazlullah’s men beheaded six of their captives, a heinous violation of the Pashtunwali honor code.

Why 'the proud Pak Fooj' is bent upon killing its on citizen and fighting USA war on its on land?

Umama,

Pakistan has to prevent attacks from within its territory on another nation. The army was sent into FATA to police the area and prevent such attacks, not to fight its "own countrymen". The militants in FATA are the ones who decide to fight the military, and then went even further and started conducting all these bomb blasts, and killing and threatening innocent civilians. If this is the true nature of these militants, then the "Pak Fauj" has a duty to wipe out such terrorists. There is no excuse for suicide bombings - whether you are Palestinian, Iraqi or a Pakistani. Such people must be found and punished.

The solution is very easy, if the militants want - lay down their arms and come to a path of peace and address issues through a political process. Its their choice.
