Its ok. Muslim population in India is also supposed to be 3 times+ or so of what they have been counted as in repeated census.

Don't expect any valid source for such claims. Too many people don't even know how a census or population estimate works.

Couldn't have wrote it better myself. To hell with the jingoism and chest thumping of that time. This is what Pakistan has to deal with, from it's brothers....Heck, Afghanistan gets on better with Russia than Pakistan lol.
I also include Pakistan's liaisons with the Taliban when I write about the issue of regret.
Pakistan should have never involved itself with this mess. Others funded it and watched from afar. Pakistan jumped from the frying pan into the fire.

I think it is the bleakest chapter in our history after 71. I believe the threat Russia posed to Pakistan was highly inflated just to justify a useless invasion of Afghanistan. We should have let the Afghans fend for themselves and fight the Soviets themselves. Instead with Zia at the helm we decided that we were threatened and sent our forces and resources to fight a pointless war for which Afghans hate us till today.

We should have let the Afghans fend for themselves and fight the Soviets themselves. Never ever fight another country's war for it. You will only ever damage yourself in the long run unless you are prepared to go all the way (full annexation and assimilation). This is history 101.

Yes, but none that can be quoted or verified by neutral sources.

UN estimates are probably taken from NARA, right? To be perfectly honest, nobody can say for sure the exact estimation range.

We were concerned with the idea that the Soviets may be looking for warm waters and that Pakistani Military would not be able to resist a full Soviet assault/invasion.

The concern was wrong based on a poor analysis. The Soviets neither had the resources or will for that. The fallout would have been huge.

I agree with you, but we are talking from the benefit of hindsight. At the time who knows what state of internal worry and panic Pakistan military administration was in with USSR in potential control of western border of Pakistan.

Still every country has to learn this bleak lesson of involvement in another country's war...India learnt it when doing same in Sri Lanka for a few years...of course the degree and conditions of conflict there was a lot different compared to Pak/Afghan....and we were out in just a few years....nor do we have a huge porous land border, drug trade or same amount of refugees on per capita basis because of it as legacy of that one.....but underlying lesson is the same.

So .. Finally the external powers proxy war has openly started through Afghanistan as it was expected. However, Pakistan should target only military installation and avoid maximum civil causalities because current Afghan govt is not supported by the people but by the external powers so its not the will of Afghan people but by few people who dont care about afghan public, if they were, they should not sabotage the peace talk between Taliban and Afghan govt. so its very much like Afghan public is paying the price of the stupidity of these clowns. while pakistan should buckle up it self for a longer proxy war in the region.

Preparation was fine, but getting headlong involvement was an error which has bought Pakistan to its knees.

It would play into the hands of NATO backed regime if Pakistan were to target Afghan civilians; do not forget the mistakes of the N.S Germans in the former USSR. The Soviets even committed false flag atrocites against Soviet civilians to turn pro German sentiment into anti German sentiment.
