DHAKA, Bangladesh — Soldiers have been deployed in a northern Bangladeshi district after activists of the country's largest Islamic party clashed with police, leaving three people dead during a nationwide general strike called to denounce an ongoing war crimes trial.

The Daily Star newspaper quoted police official Mokbul Hossain in Bogra district as saying that three men died in the clashes on Sunday.

Hossain said the latest violence erupted after the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami attacked police outposts and a ruling Awami League office.

The Islamic party has called for a non-stop shutdown across the country for Sunday and Monday.

At least 49 people have died in rioting after a tribunal on Thursday sentenced a senior party leader to death for war crimes committed during the 1971 independence war against Pakistan.

Dhaka: Bangladesh has deployed Army troops in a tense northern district as violence continued to plague Bangladesh for fourth day on Sunday when three men died in clashes in Bogra district.

The deadly clashes occurred during the nationwide strike called by Jamaat-e-Islmai party protesting against a war crimes trial that on Thursday sentenced death to a senior leader and vice president of J-e-I party Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

The 73 year old Jamaat leader was handed death sentence by a special war crimes tribunal for committing atrocities in 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

The verdict has triggered violence in Bangladesh in which more than 50 have been killed so far. Hossain said the latest violence erupted after the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami attacked police outposts and a ruling Awami League office.

The Islamic party has called for a non-stop shutdown across the country for Sunday and Monday.

With violence showing no signs of abating, paramilitary border guards have been deployed across the country to beef up security and ease tension that has gripped the nation.

The tense situation prompted local authorities to enforce ban on gathering of more than four people under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in troubled areas, five northwestern and one southwestern district, said to be JI strongholds.

No bro, I think the news on international media was based on the initial assumption of local media. Army deployment is a good thing. Denying it is pointless. But I believe army will be deployed soon. But they are not right now.

Bangladesh deploys army in north as protest death toll mounts

Bangladesh deployed troops in the north of the country on Sunday as six more people were killed in fresh clashes over the conviction of Islamist leaders for war crimes in the Muslim-majority nation.

The army was deployed in violence-wracked Shahjahanpur town after more than 5,000 stick-wielding protesters attacked two police stations, forcing police to open fire, they said.

“At least four people were killed in clashes after Jamaat-e-Islami supporters attacked us. The toll could rise,” Shahjahanpur district’s deputy police chief Moqbul Ahmed told news agency AFP, adding that troops had been deployed to boost security.

Two other people were also killed on Saturday night, including a ruling party student activist who was allegedly hacked to death by suspected Jamaat supporters, police said.

An inter-city train was torched late Saturday in the northwest but there were no casualties, police said.

The death toll in the clashes over the war crimes verdicts has risen to 62 since January 21, including 46 killed in the past four days after Jamaat’s vice president was sentenced to death, police said.

I am mixed on this developero, on one hand I see your view point that media has slight goverment leaning and is not properly covering the issue with respect to discrepancy as far as tribunal is concern. However I kind of feel guilty as members of my extended familie overseas(never personally met them so don't judge) did serve during that period and I think let bangladaise do the trials and bury the hachet so we can forget the tragedy. This is one of the dark parts of our pakistani heritage and hopefully after this tribunal pakistani and bangladaise can be brothers again.!!!

Good to know. With little knowledge about Bangladesh affairs, you should not be taking sides with any particular group or individuals.

The proxy IMO is the party called Awami League which is being used by India to make Bangladesh into a virtual vassal state:

Hopefully DMK swats can handle the pressure, feel for the guys though working overtime. Also is regular military getting deployed as far as army deployment or are we getting special forces involved too in this escalated situation.

Actually SWAT is for special operation like in US, we have a reserved police force called APBN (Armed Police Battalion) to fight riot on streets or any extremity in civilian. When whole police failed to control, the border guard- a paramilitary force was deployed. Now both police and border troops are on the streets, only 2 platoons army have been deployed in a suburb of Bogra city to protect the police station there after police failed to control situation. It doesn't mean army is there to join the riot, they are only keeping the peace there.

No bro, I think the news on international media was based on the initial assumption of local media. Army deployment is a good thing. Denying it is pointless. But I believe army will be deployed soon. But they are not right now.

I actually had to do a country study on bangladaise in grade 9 so I got a chance to ask gramps about the event so I have a basic understanding of it and understand the underlying sensitivity due crimes against humanity that occured but please do consider that this period is a shame to our heritage and hopefully after this, ties can be mended through reconciliation. I know it will be tough to get past the events but I mean look at the violence and stupid rightwing fringe group just creating more hatred then going to court and actually Not acting out muslim virtues rather slendering our the faith of peace.
