what is the history of that hat? I asked before, but got some weird non-answer. I mean that looks like a cowboy hat to me, or is it one of those Brit hats that got passed down to the Indian side? Or is it a completely Indian thing?

This hat is worn by regiments which have troops belonging to the hills in North & East India - Gurkhas, Kumaon,Assam, Garhwal Regiments & the Assam Rifles.

These areas have high rainfall and the wide brim is meant to keep the rain off the face & eyes , hence its made of hard material.

It is nothing to do with Brit of Indian thing - its a necessity.
