Arjun Tank to Target Russian T55 Today

BALASORE: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has scheduled a ‘live-testing’ of ammunition from one tank to another at the test range of Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) at Chandipur-on-sea on Wednesday. This is the first time that such a test is being conducted in any range or anywhere in the country.

Reliable sources told ‘The Express’ that the ammunition will be fired from the indigenously developed main battle tank (MBT) Arjun to Russian T55 tank.

“The test will be conducted against the decommissioned tank T55 which has been brought from Pune and ammunition will be fired from Arjun. All the values will be recorded. They will analyse the effect of the ammunition on the target tank,” said a senior defence official on condition of anonymity.

Some new ammunition developed by DRDO will also be put to test for the first time. Penetration complass, thermobaric and high explosive (HE) ammunition will be fired against the tank in a war like scenario to gauge the performance.

“Earlier, no instrumented tank has been targeted by another tank during such trials. It is a complicated exercise and difficulties are there but we are expecting good results. Tanks like T55 are with other countries and that’s why we want to know the effect of new ammunition on such tanks,” he informed.

Defence sources said, after several years of trials and tribulations, Arjun has proved its worth under various circumstances, such as driving cross-country over rugged sand dunes, detecting, observing and quickly engaging targets and accurately hitting targets, both stationary and moving with accuracy.

The Arjun entered service with the Indian Army in 2004. The tanks were first inducted into the 43 Armoured Regiment of the Army Armoured Corps while the latest induction has been into the 75 Armoured Regiment on March 12, 2011.

T55=> China copy ( Type 59)

Type-59 was an upgrade of T-55 built by China.. Infact the type-59 had several variants too.

If they had done this test 40 years ago may be then arjun would have been functional today....

No you are buying T-90s instead...

2.But last year we produced around 40 Arjun mk2 which are at present undergoing final user acceptance trails. T90s are another story. We are not rich enough to put up 4000 Arjun tanks ( they are on an expensive side ) so we are aiming for around 2000 T90s and 2000 upgraded T72s. Arjuns will be around 300-500 in number.

Well from what I can tell they are going to fire a 120mm round at a old russian T55 tank hull. Not sure what the point is? We all know the result already, Iraq is full of old T55 vintage hulls with holes in them.

Arjun is counted as one of the best tank that even the Chinese military experts praises it.

Such tests for T90 would have been conducted by Russia.... The test is more about understanding impact of Ammunition...rather than tank capabilities.

India ordered around 13000
T-90s, has around 1700+ T-72s and 118-122 Arjuns.

The tanks in Indian service were upgraded over time with better armour. And its always a better idea to test on real targets.

It does not mater how much you try to upgrade a T55, its still not even going to resist a 105mm tank round, (and DRDO wants to test it against a120mm HESH, or APFSD?)
