Argentina signs with Israel for tank upgrade

Argentina has agreed to a USD111 million contract with Israel to upgrade 74 TAM main battle tanks.

The deal was signed by Argentine minister of defence Agustin Rossi and Mishel Ben-Baruch, director of the Israeli Ministry of Defence's International Defence Cooperation Division (SIBAT), on 26 June.

Rossi announced that the contract includes an offset agreement clause that will establish joint ventures to oversee technology transfers to Argentina. The work is to be performed at the 601 Arsenal Battalion in Boulogne Sur Mer in Buenos Aires province.

The contract covers 74 TAM upgrades and is part of the Argentine Medium Tank Modernisation Programme that began in 2009.

In 2010, a modernization program was announced. Israeli defense contractor Elbit Systems was chosen. The first TAM unit upgraded by Elbit Systems was delivered in March 2013. Hydraulic turret drives were replaced by electric ones.The gun barrel received a thermal sleeve. Installed was a stabilized COAPS - Commander Open Architecture Panoramic Sight - with day and IR night cameras, A threat warning system (combined laser pointer and laser warning system) and an APU so that systems can be electrical systems can be remain operational even when the main engine is switched off. Side skirts were installed to improve protection and reduce dust. New helmets with modern crew communication system. New data- and datalink system. Target display system (for targets detected by UAV). New IFF system (to reduce chances of fratricide), Turret bustle storage bin/rack. Possibly LAHAT atgw.

well I was going to say why they don't buy a new tank design, but it seems the TAM was tailor met for the Argentina geography and infrastructure.

they could use some modern M2 Bradleys though to go with the TAM, would be a good combo.

Exactly, it meets their needs..As for M2, they have an ICV variant already, and some more.
