Are China and India converging?

and this is where you expose your ignorance once again.....we also did not start our reforms truly well in 1991...again to borrow your word..we had to first undo the socialist, licence raj and coupled to that we had to face internal security problems in kashmir and noth east which you people did not have...our reforms well and truly started probably in 2000 or 2001...and even then it was started under sanctions imposed due to the nuclear tests of 1998...so no we did not start on an even keel...

you not that smart are you by your logic britain probally had atleast 20 years head start than china look at where they are now?

This 15 year headstart is only a myth Indians like to say to make themselves feel better. Truth is India may even have a 1 to 2 year head start on China. 1978 to 1991 was just undoing communism. 1992 was when real economic reforms started. So unless India was communist before 1990 and living in communes, then the two countries started at around the same time. Even the US State Dept History of China backs this up.

China

China started in 1949 and India in 1947. That was when both nations became truly independent. No excuses. China was sanctioned by every single country in the world except African and Latin American ones 1964-1976, so that was a further disadvantage, yet China still achieved higher average lifespan in 1976 when Mao was still alive, than India did in 2009. China achieved higher literacy in 1982 when Deng just got the seat warm in his office, than India did in 2009.

Communism was necessary for destroying feudal thought like footbinding (never wiped out in China under the ROC), warlords and dynastic thinking. It was also necessary to instill the discipline, literacy and basic nutrition needed for future economic development. If India had communism for 30 years and wiped out feudal thought, then India would be just as developed as China.

India can not function as a dictatorial communist system. We are just too diverse.

Democracy though a legthy process is a long lasting system. Communism may be a fast food but injurious to health in the long run...

You have seen 60-65 years, see 60 more and than compare.

I am totally and only for Democracy as the system. And Indian DEMOCRACY in terms of quality is only improving now ...things like Lok Paal will give the democracy actual muscles...

Anyway....we have progressed in the last 60 years ( and not regressed) ....may be less..but did progress...isn't it.

India for the first 40 years tried to be a socailits / communist country and stiffled pvt ownership, with nationalization hanging on the head of pvt entrepreneurs. Licence and permit system and what not...

only post 1991 did the system changed......its just teh beginning..

The communism would indeed help India to destroy its racist caste system, while maintaining a sustainable population for its growth.

Please don't troll. There're a lot of Indians living in China so are they long for slavery? As to the one child policy, it is a sacrafice made by everyone, even next leader Xi Jinping just has one daughter, so what is the problem with that?

Nothing is only black and white. Communism may not work in India because of diversity, as one India member mentioned earlier. But there's a reason Chinese chose the system using their blood. It nationalized the land and every farmer has a piece of land of their own. There was some extreme policies like Greap Leap Forward of course. It also helped to improve public health, education etc. Even before China's reform, the life span was closed to those of developed countries. It also established China's industrial system that enable today's China as a manufacturing hub.

And system does change from time to time, now China is in Communism in the party name only. China is as communism as Democratic Korea (North Korean) is democratic.
