What's new

Anyone play Counter Strike here ?

Not even that. I grew up with arcade type games like Missile Command or Asteroid, the kind that you actually have to leave the house and play standing up, that at least force some level of physical activities.

But people should take this research seriously. As someone who once taught self defense to women, I have yet to meet any gamer who beat me electronically senseless at Mortal Kombat to stand against me even for one minute in the ring where I will beat him physically senseless. Am not a 'health nut' but the best life is a life where one has little to worry about one's body, other than to heal an occasional sprained ankle or cracked rib from being active, than to suffer internal rot because of a sedentary lifestyle. Besides, chicks dig physically active guys -- in and out of bed -- and am not talking about moving mountains here.

Haha, I hear you.
As in everything else, I think that it's all about balance.

Video games can be dangerous for kids these days, I agree. There is a tendency to just ignore all physical activity and sit with a controller. On the other hand, there are all kinds of video games. Some can improve motor skill, tell stories and instill good values.

I play games for a few hours a day, work out, run, play sports.

As I said, it's all about balance.

Everyday in high school I held court in the library where all the fittest chicks would line up asking me to help them with their homework.

Exactly. Several years after I had to leave the aviation industry due to some family related duties and entered semicon, I met up with a friend who entered the 'computer age' much sooner than I and was employed by a simulation company consulting for the US Army. The US military take computer gaming, or more specifically the philosophy behind these first-person-shooter games, very very seriously. These games provide the individual soldier with a "God's Eye" view of a hypothetical scenario and it is more about his intellectual response, manifested through his game controller, that interested the military. The Army will analyze individual responses, find out why there are different responses and when, and try to come up with an explanation to explain these differences. Then get everyone together in a physical training situation filled with all the stimuli of a real combat situation. The result was that the more physically fit the soldier, the faster he and the entire unit respond to a threat that everyone had mentally rehearsed in a gaming session where each soldier had his "God's Eye" view as to what everyone should be doing. All militaries have training programs to varying degrees of crudity and finesse. All computer gaming does is greatly accelerated the discoveries and analyses of successes and failures of responses.
