Anti - India Sentiments In Maldives

.
Maldives is in a sad state of affairs given their small size which adds to their geographic vulnerability. But as muslims they should not lose hope. Have faith in Allah(swt) & everything will work out fine. Calling a legitimate maldivian party radical shows how pathetic twisted Islamophobic communal terrorst mindset Indian media have. They are a mirror reflection the Indian psyche both at the gov and personal level. Maldives should be fine as along they side with china which profile in IOR is set to rise dramatically over the next decade or 2.

Now hypothetically speaking, how does maldives joining Pakistan or Indonesia sounds to my PAK & Indoneshian brothers here. I know it won't happen, but speaking hypothetically how would U feel if down the line Islamically revitalised maldives offer to Join PAK/ Indoneshia or for security reasons. It would have solved a lot of problems for Maldives.

We are never stopped to be amazed by Chinese Cheerleaders :)
Anyway if ur country or pakistan can take their population when their islands goes down, we will be happy.
BD cannot promise that though as ur own lands are going down. Maldive citizens mostly earn their bread from India, selling fishes to India, their students study in Indian University and we provide security for the atoll.
Even the GMR issue is nothing. They opposing it for the sake of money they got from some other company. If we sever ties even for a week, they would feel like drowning. China knows itself very well, it wont come all the way from pacific to maldive . For them India is too important than a tiny spec of islands which might disappear pretty soon

.
Broski ...lakhs of nepali citizens are working in India , earning their daily wages ....govt of their's might harbor anti India attitudes for the reasons Kanishka pointed out ....people do not :) so dream on .

Likewise many Palestinians work in Israel and a few million Afghanis live and work in Pakistan.
And you will find foreign relations are usually addressed between the governments rather than the citizens.

Sometimes I am amazed by the hypocrisy displayed here.

It is a country which says in its constitution - "a non-muslim can't be a citizen" - that is the first step in their discrimination of muslim vs non-muslim. And they sign themselves as a party to the "international human rights, civil and political right" which clearly states that one person can't be biased by religion. But we do not give a rat's ***.

Here is what bothers us.

In 2011, they destroyed the monument which had Lord Buddha image(gifted incidentally by the then Pakistani prime minister Gilani) engraved on it and more recently the islamic radicals destroyed some hindu and buddhist artifacts in a museum.

And a blog written by a sufi muslim was shutdown as anti-islamic in 2011.

And their own former president calls it out.

With all these blatant anti-muslim/anti-sufism sentiments being expressed by certain radical groups which command power beyond their own own capacity and if some people call it out they becomes people with islamaphobic communal terror mindset?

Let them move to china when maldives sink to the bottom of the ocean.Send your students to ur 'brothers' in the gulf universities, and trade ur fish and bread with these people.IF they give basing rights to chinese cut off all aid and help, and if fortune forbid war breaks out and they let chinese use their island for military purposes we will have no choice but to sent them back to the stone age.

One one hand Maldivian relations with India deteriorating is incorrect.

Scher asked how U.S. training STATE 00018437 003 OF 003 compared with that of India in terms of quantity and quality. Ghafoor said that both were substantive and substantial. He acknowledged that Maldives also interacts with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, as one might expect of a 100 percent Muslim country situated in the region. Scher indicated that the U.S. did not want to get in the way of Maldivian relationships with its neighbors. Ghafoor assessed that New Delhi's perception of the U.S. has evolved and that Male would be able to address any concerns. He stated that his government would not let relations with India impact relations with the United States, reflecting Maldives's attempt to "show balance" in the past. Ghafoor replied that, if necessary, Maldives would explain that neither India nor Pakistan need suspect anything "untoward."

But threat of radicalism and terrorism is substantial

Maldives -------- ¶9. (S) While Maldives is of little global significance, it is nonetheless that rare commodity in the GWOT: a moderate Muslim country that is well-disposed to and seeks greater cooperation with the United States. We include relevant Maldivian officials in law enforcement and military training opportunities. We have also raised with Maldivian officials the possibility of terrorists transiting Male' international airport, which would be easy to do (although there is no credible information to date). The GoRM, which we are encouraging towards greater openness and democracy, is fearful of Muslim extremism and eager to cooperate with us on that issue on a global basis. It is important to note that during the long process of negotiating the recent return home of the Maldivian held at Guantanamo, the Maldivians made clear that they took very seriously the possibility of one of their nationals being involved in global terrorist efforts against the United States. ¶10. (S) In the same vein, any ATA funds made available by Washington should cover programming/training for Maldives as well as Sri Lanka. For example, one ATA couse each year in Airport security Management, Document Fraud Examination or Maritime Security would greatly increase our CT cooperation with Maldives. We should also ensure that Maldives is included in any public diplomacy/outreach efforts aimed at young Muslim populations. On the terrorist financing front, Maldives is working with the IMF to develop an anti-money laundering effort, and therefore has not shown keen interest in U.S. Treasury training in this area, although it would consider training that is coordinated with, and complementary to, the IMF program. Nonetheless, we need to continue to include Maldives in all of our terrorist finance initiatives. LUNSTEAD

But if China do same to maldives as they are doing to bangladesh by building hude Dam in Brahmaputra which would danger whole BD existance.

Actually BD does same in 47 but Mujib regret same later in 71.

Ignoring all the pompous drivels, the reality is those at the helm are feeling the pinch.

Now it is Maldive's turn feel the heat

Indian government loan delayed probably due to GMR issues: Finance Minister

Minister of Finance Abdullah Jihad has said that he believes that the $25 million loan promised by the government of India is being delayed due to unresolved issues with GMR.

Coalition parties included in the government have commenced efforts to reclaim Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) from its current operator, Indian company GMR.

Jihad, who is currently abroad, told Sun Online in a brief interview that the Indian government has been repeatedly requested, via the High Commission, to expedite the loan.

The Indian government agreed in 2011 to extend $100 million as loan to the Maldives.

The Indian government passed last month, to provide $25 million as a loan, out of $50 million which was supposed to be given as trade credit.

The Maldivian parliament also passed approval to Finance Ministry last month, to obtain this loan from India.

Poor Maldives folks..... when will they ever realise that their world revolves around India. !!
That is as a matter of fact true. Maldives basically runs on being a transit/channel for funneling FDI money in India. The day we break a treaty that gives them special tax concessions, their economy will take more than a huge hit.

most of them are illegal immigrants
and those maldivians must be out of their empty minds they are cutting their own lifeline

Maldives is shooting itself with this radicalism - About 30% of the GDP is contributed by the tourism as Maldives has some nice beaches with its torquoise waters and is a very good place for diving. But how are they screwing themselves? Many westerners conduct their wedding or renew their vows but in 2010 one of the employees performing the vow renewal in his local language dished out hate and called these couples 'swines', "infidels" - called their children "bastards" and commented on the bride's breasts. Early this year, they closed all the spas in the resort hotels(later they opened it) - but this kind of messages is not good for the tourism. With SL picking up post civil war and Bali and Boracay nearby, Maldives will rely more and more on aid which is the situation even now.

P.S - Why can't they take a leaf out of Phuket which is an Islamic region but makes it more pleasant for the tourists thereby getting a major share of the Thailand tourism.

.
Already maldivian tourism have flattened this year breaking tourism growth for the first time. If this political activism continues on, with India cutting loans, (India gives money for salaries of Maldivian civil servants), they did be hard pressed.
GMR hardly have done any mistake on their path.
