Turkish Aerospace Industries, or TAI, one of the country's top defense firms, unveiled Tuesday the nation's first locally designed and developed, large-scale drone at the Farnborough Airshow 2010 in Britain, one of the world's top defense fairs.

The medium-altitude, long-endurance drone, named the Anka (Phoenix), is designed to operate at 30,000 feet and boast 24-hour endurance, TAI said Wednesday.

The Anka unmanned aerial vehicle is scheduled to take off for its maiden flight in October and is set for full operating capability by late 2012, the company said.

Turkey is planning to use the Anka for reconnaissance and target acquisition purposes against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which in recent months has intensified attacks on Turkish targets in the country's southeast from bases in neighboring northern Iraq.

The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

TAI originally launched the $92 million Anka program in 2004, but the project faced development problems that caused delays.

There are plans to manufacture four prototypes as part of the program.

The Turkish Air Force has not formally placed any orders but is eventually expected to acquire roughly 30 Ankas, according to a defense procurement official.

The Anka's original roll-out ceremony took place at a TAI plant near Ankara on July 16 with National Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül in attendance.

Foreign interest

At that ceremony, TAI and procurement officials said a few countries, including Pakistan, also are interested in buying the Anka.

One TAI official said an armed version of the Anka was possible but was not currently in the works.

Defense industry sources said the Anka's ultimate role was still unclear, but members of the TAI team producing the drone said they were confident it would become a key part of Turkey's electronic spying arsenal.

The Anka has a maximum payload capacity of 200 kilograms and will fly at a speed of 75 knots, officials said.

Turkey also accepted the delivery of six Israeli-produced Heron drones, which can also fly at an altitude of up to 30,000 feet for 24 hours.

Four of those platforms are operational now, while Turkey is expected to receive four more Herons later this summer.

* I also have learned that some of the Anka's Parts have been developed by A.W.C

It is good news, and we can learn by TAI about our on going programs regarding UAVs.

Armed version possible but not currently in works.........

24 hour endurance is awesome but make it an armed one......Cant wait for jets when a high value target is on the ground....

good news this uav looks like predator not as much as lethal predator but for sure it can do more to pakistan

How much you have to pay for per piece? But it is just a UAV, I thought PAF already have UAV's.

So, what's this thread about? Is it that PAF has Anka? or that there is some sort of contract with AWC? or that PAF has the technology to weaponize the vehicle?

How much you have to pay for per piece? But it is just a UAV, I thought PAF already have UAV's.

It is a MALE UAV. Anyone can make a UAV at this point. Making a Modern MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) UAV is another deal. India is working on one as well called the Rustom.

Can this uav be armed or is Turkey or Pakistan working on a armed viersion?

Pakistan has an indigenous program for an Armed UAV (presumably based on a MALE platform) called "Burraq"...

Pakistan has multiple options going for it right now...

1. AWC/AERO working with TAI on the Anka
2. PAC Kamra working with Selex-Galileo on the Falco & later Falco Evo
3. NESCOM working on the Burraq

From the looks of it I think the Pakistan military will support multiple MALE UAV programs, and we may end up seeing each organization use a different aircraft. For example, the Army might use the Burraq while the PAF pushes with Anka and/or Falco. Each service will have different requirements, and its possible each particular aircraft is better suited for certain environments, roles, etc, over others. That said, I think it'd be worthwhile for PAF/PAC to consider Falco/Falco Evo as an export-oriented program for MALE UAV with co-production and co-marketing with Selex Galileo.

24 hours endurance......Thats whats awesome about this UAV.....

It is using a modified Mercedes diesel engine ..so trust me these engines can last a lot more than 24 hours. These are some of the best and longest endurance engines in the world which can continously redline.

Pakistan shud go for it and also falco, while burraq will be armed

Do we know what Burraq would look like ?

Turkey’s Center of Aerospace, Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. (TAI) introduced its first operative-class unmanned aerial vehicle named ANKA on Friday, 16 July 2010.

During the roll out ceremony held at TAI’s facilities in Ankara, TAI’s President & CEO Mr. Muharrem Dörtkasli stated that “TAI has been dealing with unmanned aerial vehicle technologies since the beginning of 1990’s. With a 17 m wingspan, 1,600 kg take-off weight and 24 hrs endurance capability and state-of-the-art systems, ANKA will be among the top players in UAV market”. TAI’s Chairman of the Board of Directors Lt. Gen. (R) M. Yalçin Kaya added that “ANKA completely designed and manufactured by Turkish engineers, with the recent achievements, now TAI is the center of excellence in Turkey for operative UAV programs”. Turkish Minister of Defense HE Vecdi Gönül underlined as “Turkey has a strong defense and aerospace infrastructure for design and manufacturing of platforms as well as systems integration”.
