Amid tensions, Chinese fruit a turnoff in Vietnam

Chinese merchants now collecting turtles, cassavas

VietNamNet Bridge – Hearing that Chinese merchants are now collecting turtles and cassavas, Phu Yen’s farmers have been rushing to exploit aquatic species and grow cassava.

After Tet, Phu Yen’s local residents have been rushing to hunt for water turtles to sell to Chinese merchants. A kilogram of turtles can be sold at 20 million dong, the profit which is clearly much higher than the profits from growing rice. As a result, hundreds of farmers have left their fields idle, while leaving for mountainous districts, such as Son Hoa and Song Hinh to catch turtles.

Le Ngoc Quang, a turtle hunter in Tay Hoa district led Nguoi lao dong’s reporter to Song Hinh Commune in Song Hinh district to lay a trap for turtles.

“I don’t understand what Chinese use turtles for. Why do they accept to buy turtles at such high prices?,” he questioned. “I know some people earned hundreds of millions of dong from selling turtles”.

However, Hai Tuan, Tu Trung, the men, who reportedly earned hundreds of millions of dong from selling turtles, denied the rumor that they could earn big sums of money.

“It is just wrong information. In the past, there were many turtles. However, people have caught all the turtles here already. There is no more turtle to catch,” said Pham Ngoc Hoang in Song Hinh district.

According to a merchant, who collects turtles from farmers to sell to bigger traders, turtles are put into boxes and then carried to Hanoi, where they are sold to a trader and then carried illegally to China.

The turtles being hunted in Phu Yen belong to IIB group, which listed in the IUCN’s Red Book as CR species. In 2006, the Government promulgated the Decree No 32 on protecting wild animals in Vietnam, in which the turtles in the central region are listed among the animals that need protection, while trade, exchange or consumption is prohibited.

However, Hoang said, local residents do not want to know about that, they just know that they can earn big money from selling that kind of turtles.

Not only hunting for turtles, over the last one, hundreds of local residents in Tuy An district have also been rushing to catch dat, a two-shelled mollusks, which live in brackish water. In the past, the aquatic species was cheap, priced at 4000 dong per kilo, which was only used to make fish sauce or feed for tiger shrimp.

However, as Chinese merchants now have high demand for the aquatic product, the prices have been pushed to 15,000, and then 25,000 dong per kilo

Chinese demand destroying Vietnam’s plantation strategy

The scrambling for dried and fresh cassava has never been as stiff as the one in 2011. Earlier this crop, Dong Xuan and Song Hinh cassava processing factories collected cassava at 1800 dong per kilo. Meanwhile, small merchants scrambled for the materials by paying 4000 dong for a kilo of dried cassava.

This forced the factories to raise the purchase price to 2200 dong per kilo. After that, small merchants also raised the purchase price to 5200 dong per kilo. And factories had to offer the price at 2500 dong per kilo.

Huynh Van Dong, Director of the Dong Xuan Cassava Factory complained that his factory has to finish the production season soon, in mid-May, because it does not have materials to run.

With the material growing area of 5000 hectares and the designed processing capacity of 285 tons per day, Dong previously planned to end the production season on June 15. However, he has to do that one month earlier than planned.

The high prices of cassava have encouraged people to rush to grow cassavas. The land areas, where people grew corn, bean and sesame, now have been reserved for growing cassava.

“This has spoiled the district’s plantation strategy. If the cassava prices decrease the next year, farmers would have to chop down cassavas. If so, they will suffer from hunger,” said Dao Duy Linh, Head of the Son Hoa’s district’s agriculture sub-department.

That's what you get from free reign of capitalism, another version of Wall Street failure where regulations are not strictly enforced. But to claim that all Chinese food is poisonous is nothing but fear mongering for vicarious reasons. A drop of rat poop spoils entire jar of rice, so says the old saying.

Anyway, at least media and the public are raising havoc. It's kind of unavoidable to have some unscrupulous merchants during rapid development. The media is also responsible for sensational stories. Isn't the media's job to post eye-catching stories?

When I got back to China, I eat all kinds of street food. Yummy!

Its a lie from TW,no VN news papers said like that.
Come on, Taiwan invented the incident and installed heavy weapons on the Taiping Island (太平島) in the South China Sea, not just against VN but also against possible CN invasion.

Crumbs! When I was a kid "Chinese food" was something to look forward to; now the phrase is one of dread. Was there ever another era in all of Chinese history when food it sold to people and animals had to be checked for poisonous substances? And perhaps because Chinese exporters have a reputation for faking their origin labels, American produce is shunned as well. (The U.S. exported over 10,000 tons of grapes to S.E. Asia last year.)
LOL You should know Chinese merchants sell apples at only half price what you demand in Vietnam. You are soon out of business.

I can't believe Vietnam needs fruits from other countries. I thought the climate there is much better for fruit growth.

Global Market. Sell something at a higher price and later on buy it cheaper from other sources. Same thing here as pakistan sells agricultural stuff to Gulf and West then later on we can buy it from countries i.e. cheaper from china. Basically it is called ripping them off.

Not surprised. China exports large amounts of apple juice to the U.S. But the apple market is so big it's unlikely U.S. producers will go out of business any time soon.

Of course you consider Taiwan to be a better neighbor, because Vietnam is the one bullying Taiwan. This is essentially equivalent to a bully got slapped hard by his much stronger neighbor, then took his frustrations out on the neighbor's wimp of a cousin.
What did we do to bullying Taiwan!?

Food poisoning raises alarm bell in Da Nang

DA NANG (VNS)— The central Da Nang City reported that it had 30 people suffered from food poisoning last year, an alarming figure compared to none the year before.

The report was released by head of Da Nang's Food Safety Department Nguyen Minh Tiet on Thursday, who added that these cases resulted in no deaths.

"Inspections uncovered 710 violations of food hygiene and safety regulations at food processing centres and restaurants, lower than the figure of 732 in 2011, but the number of people hospitalised with food poisoning surged," he said.

The worst case occurred in November when 26 people were admitted to hospital after eating meat pies from Dong Tien bakers in Hai Chau district.

Earlier in the year, four people fell ill after eating noodles at the Sandy Beach Resort in Ngu Hanh Son District. The city issued VND150 million in fines to punish the guilty parties.

According to a report, the city's food safety and hygiene agency destroyed 6.6 tonnes of rotten internal organs and 700kg of puffer fish – a fish that can be poisonous to humans.

The city also shut down 11 substandard food processing centres at Tho Quang seafood market in Son Tra District.

Also last year, 14 of 25 vegetable samples taken were found to have an excess of common bacteria including salmonela, coliform and Ecoli which are the most common causes of food poisoning.

Traces were also found in pork on sale at street stalls and markets. The city of 950,000 consumes 70,000 tonnes of seafood each year and 80,000 tonnes of vegetables. — VNS

I do believe that we will kick TWnese troops out of Itu-Aba before China carrier complete.

We must have that unsinkable carrier Itu-Aba to counter China's invasion. If China take this isl before us, then we will under great threat from them.

TW is too small to have a voice in this dispute, who cares if they are kicked out or not.

Read this, kid, "They (the Vietnamese) suggested Vietnamese food was as likely to be as toxic as Chinese,..."

Any fruits or vegetables grown on soil drenched with Agent Orange can only be MORE toxic than any melamine milk from China.

Lucky some of you buy toxic fruits soaked in Agent Orange yet with a mixture of less toxic Chinese ones...
