UN Under-Secretary General for peacekeeping Field Support Ameerah Haq Sunday said her department would take initiatives to provide more comprehensive information on how Bangladesh could ensure greater participation in both personnel and logistics in field support services of UN peacekeeping and peace-building operations, reports UNB.

"Bangladesh has not only been a leading peacekeeper contributing country for the United Nations but also a country that brings in well-trained and highly professional quality peacekeepers who are logistically self-contained with a rapid deployment capacity within short notice by the UN," she said.

Haq made the remark during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni at the Foreign Ministry.

Haq, who became the Head of the Department of Field Support on 11 June 2012, following the departure of Under-Secretary-General Susana Malcorra also highly appreciated the role of Bangladesh in the UN's peacekeeping mission.

Dipu Moni said Bangladesh would continue to support the United Nations in its endeavour to bring peace, justice, democracy and development in conflict and post-conflict societies through its pro-active military, civilian and diplomatic contributions in UN's peacekeeping, peace-building and reconstruction operations.

The Foreign Minister lauded Haq's outstanding achievement on her appointment as the first woman from Bangladesh to the position of UN-Under Secretary General in the area of peace and security, as an inspiration to the nation, specially its women.

She underlined that the UN, especially the Department of Field Support headed by Haq, could create greater awareness and opportunities for Bangladesh to engage in commercial ventures in providing the vast logistical supplies to the UN's peacekeeping operations allover the world, especially in the areas of peacekeeping equipment, engineering constructions, medical, food and other logistic supplies.

Dipu Moni requested her for supporting Bangladesh's endeavours to secure higher numbers of recruitments in UN DFS's field-level personnel, especially in the area of electoral assistance, human rights, justice ICT, and financially sectors.

The Foreign Minister also suggested that the UN takes greater advantage of Bangladesh's strategic buffer stock of modern military equipment and armaments to swiftly deploy military and civilian contingents in its Mission support areas.

Haq, now on a three-day visit here, is expected to visit Bangladesh Institute for Peace Support Operation and Training (BIPSOT), the peace support institutions of Bangladesh and give a talk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on multidimensional peacekeeping operations field support opportunities Tuesday.
