WASHINGTON: Amazon said Wednesday it completed its first delivery by drone, in what the global online giant hopes will be a trend in automated shipments by air.

The delivery to an unnamed customer near Cambridge, England, was announced in a tweet by Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos.

"First-ever #AmazonPrimeAir customer delivery is in the books. 13 min -- click to delivery," he wrote of the December 7 order.

Amazon, which has been testing drone deliveries in the US and elsewhere, has on several occasions complained that the regulatory environment in the United States for these automated deliveries is more cumbersome.

In its video, Amazon noted that it is working with two customers receiving drone deliveries in the Cambridge area and soon hoped to expand to "dozens" near its warehouse.

Amazon is not the only group working on drone deliveries. Google parent Alphabet has a similar project known as Wing and some reports say US retail behemoth Wal-Mart is also studying drone deliveries.

In the US, the first commercial drone delivery was made in July when convenience store 7-Eleven, with drone startup Flirtey, transported a chicken sandwich, hot coffee and donuts to a customer near Reno, Nevada.

Trucks will transport anything above 5 kgs since these drones can't carry more than 10 lbs of payload. Furthermore, there are a lot legal and social issues like privacy and other risks that will be needed to be addressed.... I mean imagine dozens of drones humming and buzzing above your home.. so it is a long way before those can become mainstream and perhaps before this the self driving vehicles will become mainstream and truck drivers will be doing khaiti barri

An executive from Amazon told me a month ago that the world might see the worst recession in the next decade, as the Western world will have Robots doing everything, from Self Driving Trucks, Cars, Drone based shipments, automated Tellers at the bank (already happening), Kiosk based Pharmacies, Kiosk based basic Family Doctors, Robotic Surgeons (Robotic Surgery already happens today), Robotic Eye Doctor, Robotic Computer Programmer, r Security Guards and Robotic Soldiers (already being used to some degree and being tested by google) etc, etc. I don't know what humans would do. May be the next hottest jobs will be drone operators making $ 12 an hour

They're prototyping their own grocery store as well. No cashiers, baggers, etc.

Eventually, probably there'll be huge distribution centers, with self driving cars, etc. delivering. They're going to hit groceries stores like blockbusters. :P

I thought that amazon was delivering drones (UAVs) and almost lost my shit.
