What the old man in the video is saying is correct. Sikh rule of Punjab was the darkest period in history for Muslims of Punjab. My grandparents say the same.

I dont get whats so amazing about him. He's just an old guide who can speak English. May be he's not even a guide, just makes a living by entertaining folks with his broken English.

I am not quite sure, but I think the Sikhs ruled Pakistan for sometime(or long time) that included today's NWFP(Ranjit Sigh era?). I am not very certain though.

Its entertaining, I've been to the Badshahi mosque quite a few times, but I never ran into him. Most of the times the floor is burning hot and since we're bear feet, its a challenge checking out the mosque.

It's a loooooong walk through that big courtyard. They threw in a carpet strip across the length of the mosque. But even that got hot, so now they have running water on that carpet strip to keep it cool.

Well yes, entertaining it is. Btw, not to compare or anything, have you seen the video of the street kid in Mumbai? The one who can speak in 7 foreign languages. That is pretty amazing.

I can understand the floor getting very hot in summers. Its the same with Gurudwara courtyards in India. Probably because they are made of stone, that why.

As the guy said, during Ranjit Singh's time. But that wasn't the whole of Pakistan as it is now. All of Punjab was definitely in it, with parts of Sindh, Kashmir, northern areas and NWFP including Peshawar. The era started around 1780 after Abdali left and the Sikh Misls took over and lasted until the second Anglo-Sikh war at Chillianwala in1840 AD. After that the British took over.

Yes, that is the case.

The Sikh era was short lived. They ruled over a small portion of NWFP and I think most of Punjab. They managed to make it a few decades before getting completely annihalated a little while later by especially the British.

But it was indeed one of the darkest periods for that region. The Sikhs persecuted many innocent people, and killed and persecuted many innocent Muslims. They destroyed many mosques and harmed the Muslims immensly. They forced their ideology on many, and forcefully converted many Hindus to their religion. But thank God their small kingdom was very short-lived.

Yes, as I mentioned in my post above, it was short lived. However I don't consider it as a mean achievement as Sikhism as a religion came into existence in the 16th century and they attained power just about 2 centuries later. If they had been more ambitious, organized and united, they could have easily captured Delhi. They were already controlling most of the Satluj-Yamuna Doab. They could have easily filled the gap created by the withdrawal of Abdali to Afghanistan and the defeat of the Marathas at Panipat in 1756. The Mughal power in Delhi was the weakest at that time.

It would be great if you could post some references for what you have mentioned above. Just replace the Sikhs with Muslims and you will get what I heard from my elders and saw in Sikh museums and paintings in Gurdwaras. In fact the Golden temple has an entire section of its museum dedicated to Mughal atrocities against Sikhs. Sikhs had two of their Gurus tortured and killed by the Mughals. And just compare 300 years of Muslim Mughal rule with 60 years of Sikh rule and you will get an idea.

But I dont want to dwell on the past. Whats been done is done. Muslims are although a very small minority in East Punjab they live happily with their Sikh and Hindu neighbors.
