To my knowledge some (most?) of the stories are inspired by true events, but many characters are mythological. But I'm no expert on the matter.

Turan is a persian word . its means is land of tur or mean Turs
already we know alper tunga was a king of Turan.(alp- hero- er - man -tunga - lion /tiger (in turkic language)
Many turkic poets said that Afrasiab was a turkish king .
for example Ali-Shir Nava'i wrote about Afrasiab in '' tarixi mulku ajam'' he said that "Arjasp Binni Efrasiyab kim, Türk Padişahi erdi" clearly he said that afrasiyap was turk
Yusuf Khass Hajib wrote in his book '' tajiks called him Afrasiab he was turkish king Alp Er Tunga '' also Yusuf Khass Hajib said Alp Er Tunga ( Afrasiab ) lived in Kashgar therefore kasghar called as army city .

Turan were originally Iranians, but since turks came to central asia and pushed further, Turan at a later date became associated with Turks.
So it was kind of "corruption" of the meaning of Turan.

Not exactly , shahnameh have several section .
Some.part of it is historical and someother part are pure mythical and some part of it is history mixed d with mithology

Thats right, except for "Pahlevani" part of shahnameh, Ferdosi has used a history book called "Khodaynameh" to write shahnameh.

Based on iranian mythology, Fereydun divided his kingdom to three parts and gave them to his sons(Salm, Iraj, and Tur). The same thing mentioned in Scythians mythology. Turs were iranian tribes who were residing on east and north east of iran. nowadays this region is located in Afghanistan and central asia. some historian believe that the term "Turk" had been referred to pashtuns and other east branch of iranian tribes, but arab and islamic geographers used this term mistakenly for qaznavids, and rest of central asian tribes.
