All out effort to carry out first flight of Rustom-2 this month
First revealed at DefExpo India 2014, Rustom-2 indigenously developed HALE (high altitude, long endurance) Class Unmanned Aerial Vehicle developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) is officially 18 months behind schedule from its earlier marked/scheduled first flight in early Feb last year.
Sources in DRDO close to idrw.org have informed us that all out effort has been made to carry out first flight of Rustom-2 this month and team is working around the clock to make first flight happen by end of this month .
Sources close to idrw.org in past have blamed non-supply of actuators which were to be installed on Rustom-2 by Moog Inc of USA which was denied re-export Clearance by US State department due to Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) restrictions, which allowed engineers to work on Indigenous replacements and also integrate few sensor payloads in the first two prototypes .
Rustom-2 a HALE Class UAV will be India’s first effort to locally develop US ‘Predator’ type drones in the country which can provide long endurance high altitude battlefield intelligence/ Reconnaissance to Indian Armed forces. Rustom-2 which weights 1.8 ton can carry 350 kg of payload and has a wingspan of 21-metre and an endurance of above 24 hours which can be deployed military missions like reconnaissance and surveillance, target acquisition, target designation, communications relay, battle damage assessment and signal intelligence.
DRDO also has plans to develop an Armed variant of Rustom-2 on similar lines to armed Heron TP drones currently been purchased from Israel by India, DRDO’s associate lab is also working on miniature weapons especially to be used in drones and UCAVs.
