I consider myself a student of comparitive religions and i have read the vedas,the smritis,the shrutis etc;

Meat eating was prevalent in vedic period.Each and every caste was allowed to have non veg food,with special emphasis on kshatriyas.

Only the Pundits were not allowed to have non veg food. Pundits-Brahmins who are Vedic Scholars and teachers in the Gurukul.
