The newly-appointed Pakistan's ambassador to the United States Ali Jahangir Siddiqui has sought the cooperation of Pakistani immigrants to strengthen ties between the two countries, Geo News reported.

Siddiqui, who took the charge on May 30, has written a letter to the Pakistani immigrants living in the United States and sought their help to improve the relations between US and Pakistan.

“There is a lot of room of improvement in the ties between US and Pakistan,” he said. “I have been entrusted to take on the challenge of fulfilling my responsibilities.”

He further remarked that the members of both the countries will work together to achieve “our common objectives,” adding that he “trusts Pakistani community for the fulfillment of responsibilities.”

Siddiqui has replaced outgoing Ambassador Aizaz Chaudhry, the former foreign secretary who served as Pakistan's envoy to the US before his retirement last month.

The US Department of State took almost two months — otherwise, a routine — to send out an agreement to pave the way for the new ambassador's appointment.

Siddiqui has to present his credentials to US President Donald Trump in the coming weeks to be fully operational to perform his duties. He has daunting challenges to surmount ahead as well, given the souring US-Pakistan ties.

Siddiqui, an investment banking expert by profession, was appointed by the federal government as Pakistan's ambassador to the US last month. He has previously served in the capacity of special assistant to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, with the status of a state minister.

US-Pakistan ties
On May 11, 2018, the Trump administration imposed travel restrictions on Pakistani diplomats stationed at the Embassy in Washington, confining them to a 25-mile radius and making it obligatory for them to seek permission at least five days in advance if they wish to travel beyond the imposed limits.

Pakistan, in return, also imposed similar bans.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo told local lawmakers last week that "our State Department officials are being treated badly as well".

"[Our people] working in the embassies and in the consulates and in other places are not being treated well by the Pakistani government either," he claimed.

Though Pompeo called it "a real problem," the Department of State said: "It is the responsibility of all host governments to create the conditions necessary to permit the personnel of foreign embassies to carry out their duties."

Acknowledging the movement restrictions it had placed on Pakistani diplomats, the US State Department said: "The controls are intended to encourage Pakistan to stop [the] harassment of US Mission personnel and interference with our public activities, which have risen dramatically in recent months."

Trump earlier this year announced that his administration intended to cut down financial assistance to Pakistan. This came after months of comments and statements against Islamabad by the US president, who, in his first televised speech late last year, said it needed to "do more".

"With respect to Pakistan, we [have] released far fewer funds in 2018 than in the year prior. The remainder of the funds available are under review.

"My guess is that that number will be smaller still," Pompeo commented earlier.

Last year, Trump accused Pakistan of providing safe havens to terrorist outfits, and demanded that action be taken against the Haqqani network.

Given the aforementioned issues, Ambassador Siddiqui faces a tough task in the coming months to bring to normalcy Islamabad-Washington relations and resume bilateral alliance in various fields.

Why not pull your finger out and strengthen co-operation yourself? Leaders are meant to lead and not beg for help all the time. Grow a pair and have a strong independent policy. The pakistani diaspora do a great job worldwide, working hard, sending healthy remittances back.

Hinting at Pakistanis at top positions in USA to come forward and constitute a medium to improve Pakistan's position and image in USA Government's circles. Indians have formed a lobby against Pakistan inside USA, Nikki Haley is just one example out of millions. USA-Pakistanis should form a stance too.

What does he want now from the Pakistani diaspora? As if Pakistani expats aren't doing enough already.

This guy doesn't look very kosher either.

LOL What relationship is he even talking about? Let him be in for a couple of months. He will soon realise what Pakistan-US relations mean.

.
recall him, maybe he wants them for Laundering or turn them into patwaris or agents

This is proof why Pakistan's diplomacy is so anemic. What a poor attitude. The new Pakistan ambassador is trying to do what the Indian Embassy has been doing in US for a very long time: public diplomacy. He is trying to rally the Pakistan-American community to be more proactive rather than passive and reactive. He wants them to engage their Congressmen and Senators. He wants them to engage with the media, their community, anybody besides their closed community. Sitting in your living and eating samosas and chai is not going to cut i

Pakistan needs to create a narrative that goes beyond just countering Indian propaganda. Pakistan relations are more than about India. If Pakistan cannot articulate that, then there's no hope. US supports India because it's a valuable market for them. India buys lots of goods to US and sells a lot to.

lol parhay likhay US based Pakistanis requesting alleged money launder & a business partner of ex PM K.Abbasi to improve ties

He may not be the ideal choice, but given that the two previous ambassadors to US were both foreign secretaries -- and arguably the best the FO had to offer -- and failed miserably, it's no wonder PM Abbasi does not trust the FO to get the job done. This is why he's appointed an outsider for the role. But I don't know how effective he'll be given that elections are coming and a new government will be formed soon after that. His position might be short-lived.

Nevertheless, I won't expect any improvements until the new government is formed and a new FM is appointed.

During one of our worst times,we have deputed a totally unskilled person at sensitive diplomatic post.
Kudos to corrupt Mafia.

Every country in the world send the most experience person to US for ambassador , not this rookie. Who doesn't know jack shitz about diplomacy and already wanted in corruption case in the country . Siddiqui is there to protect Nawaz and co interest in the US house.

.
I'm more than willing to do whatever I can do but on the condition that the state of Pakistan appoints an honest, capable professional...not a criminal and money launderer...sorry I won't even go close to this ahole...

.
He is right. The indians and Israelis are smart enough to do it. We should too.

Back in 09 I attended a lecture in Pakistan by a doctor representing PAKPAC (Like AIPAC).We do have lobbying organizations but its time that they get support from Pakistanis all over the region.

Pakistan past two ambassadors to US were both foreign secretaries. You can't get more senior and experienced then that, but yet they failed to push Pakistan's narrative in Washington DC. I think Pakistan government is trying to pursue a different path.

Understandable. They could've made a better choice given the baggage this guy carries. His appointment will probably be short-lived depending on the outcome of the election. And if PML-N does manage to hold on to power, Shabaz Sharif will want his own guy. Only time will tell.

.
Americans do not like you. They don't like your nationality and religion. Deal with it. Become wealthy and strong so they have to tolerate you like they do with Chinese.
