ALH Rudra ready to spit fire | Phase-1 IOC likely in May

Can it be configured to carry a weapon like Astra ? Is there a need for it to carry Astra or is best left for fighter jet Aircraft's .

Pardon my ignorance .

Astra is a BVR misslie with raange from 80 to 120 km.
heli's to carry wepons for A to A combat are short range, not more than 15km. the primery function of a heli gun ship is air support to the ground fromations & not air defence.

by the way can anyone tell me the difference of role in Rudra & LCH? why the 2 different models?

thanks in advance.

Actually the word meaning from the vedic sanskrit root word "rud" means "one who wails" or "one who cries", and "destroyer". Rudra was worshipped as the destructive form of Shiva.

The same root has spawned words which mean "to cry" in classical sanskrit (rudati) and a lot of regional languages of today. Rona in hindi, rodanam in some south Indian languages etc.

I wonder if you can find cognates in other Indo-European languages. It might actually be related to "roar".

LCH is a pure gunship, where as Rudra is a weaponised transport helicopter rudra can take supplies for forward areas as well as provide close air support to the advancing amy ...

why there is no new news about LCH .?

seems Rudra will outnumber LCH by a big margin..

Multiutility is preferred..

The lch is a full-blooded combat chopper, designed with stealthy ,low observability features in mind. It is designed to be more aerodynamic, maneuverable, fast etc . . and will in all probability be outfitted with more equipment in a purely attack role.

the rudra, is more of a utility bird.....it can carry troops as well as weapons, the same helo would be able to drop forces off, and provide fire support.

that means LCH is a specialist while Rudra is an all rounder,
good,

I think you have made a decent observation. The root 'rud' has a diverse semantic scope anything like wailing, crying out loud, roaring fiercely. It might be related.

I had a lithuanian friend and ofcourse the word for horse is 'ashwa' in both lithuanian and sanskrit, with the cognate "eqqus" in Latin.Danu was an old river goddess and 'Dan' is a root word form many rivers in europe such as Danube.
I also remember the Sky God in the Vedas, Dyayus Pitar, and it reappears in Europe as Dispater, Zeus Pater (Father Zues, yes the Zeus is related to a relative minor Vedic God! ).Eventually KJV's Lords Prayer begins as Our Father who art in Heaven. The same sky father theme is very recurrent.

Rudra was an ancient Vedic god of independent existence. He was then absorbed as a form of Shiva.
Interesting...so far yet so near!

exactly....i wonder why the iaf is ordering 65 or these birds. i personally believe that the iaf's role should slowly be reduced to primarily achieving air superiority, and atg strikes,

while close air support must be left to army.....there is a need for combined arms strike formations. Units with a potent mix of MBTS, IFVs, SAMs and lightweight artillery, and dedicated gunships....we need to learn how to do deploy our assets in the smartest way possible if we are to fight a 2 front war someday

Very interestingly, there are many cognates in Indo-european languages, because this root word predated even vedic sanskrit, and was used in the ancient proto-indo-european language. Most of the european words like "red" and "ruddy" and "rouge" come from the same root. I didn't want to go into those since it would be off topic for the thread, but if you are interested, you should certainly look it up.

The Defence Research Development Organisation too is tempting the user (Army & IAF) with a desi-ATGM (Helina, the air version of Nag also called as alternate ATGM).

The weapons onboard Rudra cover all role aspects including air-to-air and air-to-ground from the stabilised and turreted high-velocity M621 20 mm cannon to long-range 70 mm rockets (8 km) and air-to-air missiles (Mistral-II).

Are Helina trials over for Rudra ?

And Will IA/IAF take the final call as to which ATGM will arm the Rudras ?

Not exactly, the IAF has placed firm orders for 65 LCHs whilst the IA has stated it will order at least 114 but at a later date once the program has proven itself (proboly later this year or next year when weapons trails and flight trails are complete). Whilst the IAF/IA have orders for 70 ALH WSI but this order is likely to rocket to 120 once first deliveries begin, if not more. This is a potent force IA/IAF will be operating by the end of this decade, not to mention 40-80 AH-64D Blk.III.

Shouldn't you also include the Mi-17-Vs into this list, as they are also combat capable, and are going to be inducted in huge numbers? From what I understand, that is like a much bigger Dhruv-WSI in terms of role and utility, isn't it?

The helicopter fleet of 2020 is going to be orders of magnitude more capable than that of today. Even the Dhruvs are a quantum leap from the Cheetah-Chetak combo currently in use.
