Alert: Train Derailment (developing)

With infrastructure of British era , what else do you expect. This has become routine in Pakistan. For God sake expedite the ML-1 project and come up with better train system.

Look at the train they look like they are from Stone Age.

At least 36 killed, scores injured as two passenger trains collide in Sindh's Ghotki district

A collision between two passenger express trains in Sindh's Ghotki district killed at least 36 people and injured scores more on Monday, with the death toll likely to rise as rescuers were still trying to access several mangled coaches.

According to Pakistan Railway (PR) officials, the collision occurred between the Millat Express, which was en-route from Karachi to Sargodha and Sir Syed Express, coming from Rawalpindi. The mishap occurred between Raiti and Obaro railway stations.

A spokesperson of PR added that the accident occurred after the coaches of one train, the Millat Express, derailed and fell across the opposite track, where they were hit by another train, the Sir Syed Express.

At least 30 dead had been transported to surrounding hospitals, senior district police official Umar Tufail told a local television channel.

He said he expected the toll to shoot up as there were still mangled train compartments that rescuers had not been able to access despite the passage of hours since the accident in the Ghotki district of the southern Sindh province.

The rescue train reached the site after more than six hours and officials were still trying to retrieve bodies and the injured from one of the mangled bogeys, with the effort being hampered by lack of appropriate cutters.

The Pakistan Army and the paramilitary Rangers have also reached the incident site and are taking part in the rescue efforts.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said military doctors and ambulances have been dispatched from Pano Aqil and are participating in the rescue operation. Army engineers and specialist teams of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) are being airlifted from Rawalpindi to aid the efforts.

The ISPR added that two helicopters are being flown from Multan for casualty evacuations while relief goods are being prepared and will be dispatched “shortly”.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was shocked by the 'horrific accident' and added that he had asked the railways minister to reach the site of the accident and ensure medical assistance to the injured and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the mishap.

He also said he was ordering a comprehensive investigation into "railway safety faultlines".
The senior police official added that there were up to 25 people in one compartment that had yet to be accessed.

As a result of the accident, the railway services between Sindh and Punjab had been suspended.

The railway administration said that first the injured would be evacuated and the bogies would be removed. "Only after that, the rehabilitation process would commence."

The chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh have expressed their condolences on the loss of precious lives.

Expressing regret over the train accident, PPP co-chairperson Asif Zardari said that the Sindh government should take concrete steps for the rescue operation whereas the federal government should pay compensation to the families of the victims.

Rescue efforts are underway and the injured are being shifted to local medical facilities.

This is beyond the scope of my knowledge, do explain to me why has automated signalling not been adopted in Pakistan? Is this an issue across the network or only on selected lines? And if so, is there any proposed SLA on when this is expected to change?
Bro one train's bogies derailed and fell on other side of tracks where incoming train collided with these bogies....there is no issue about signalling.

The usual departments on call again.

I would like to see all the army hating trolls on twitter, especially among our gumshoe journalist class swallow the bitter pill. The have to face the truth, come rain or shine, the military has always been there for the nation and the people!

My cousin embraced Shahadat during 2005 EQ relief operation (lifeline1) when his MI-17 crashed in Kashmir, I remember my uncle saying "I am proud of him, he died serving his people, he died with his boots on". What have these "blue ticked" self-important blow hards done for Pakistan that is remotely comparable.

I am astonished at the level of hate, bile and venom directed towards the military recently.

I am very sorry for your loss, may Allah (SWT) grant him a beautiful home in paradise. Honestly these people are the cancer in our society.

Rescue 1122 DART (Disaster Response Team) and Pakistan Army (USAR: Urban Search and Rescue) Team are now on site. I will list the type of equipment that are being deployed to carry out "search" and "rescue" of the victims.

1: Type of casualties
In rescue operations there is a principal known as the “Golden Day”, this is the first 24 hours of the incident. The greatest number of victims will be found on the first day (80/90%) and can be categorised as follows.

  • Injured, not trapped: There also are known as “surface victims” and usually account for about 50% of all victims.
  • Non-structural entrapment: These are also known as “light rescue” and usually account for 30% of all victims.
  • Structural entrapment/entombed victims: These are victims of the collapse that have been heavily trapped or entombed in the collapse, this type of rescue is extremely complicated and requires specialist teams that are able to stabilise the collapsed structure, utilise specialist search equipment and use tools to cut, breach, break or burn through the structure to access voids where the victim may be located. These types of rescue operations are almost always carried out by Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Teams.
Search Equipment:

Snake "Search Camera": Allows visual search of hard to reach areas for trapped victims

FLIR: Thermal Imaging Camera: Allows detection of body heat to aid in victim location, also useful to identify hazards such as smouldering /hidden flames.

DELSAR/LEADER (Vibraphone Victim Locator: Uses a combination of acoustic and super sensitive contact microphones to detect heartbeats, breathing and sounds of deeply trapped victims)

Co2 Detector: Trapped victims who are unconscious but breathing, expel carbon dioxide, these detectors can detect traces of co2 to help locate victims.
