ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police have arrested an alleged al Qaeda activist involved in the killing of Chaudhry Zulfiqar, prosecutor in Benazir Bhutto murder case, who was killed in Islamabad last month when was on his way to attend the court proceedings of the case.

Highly placed sources in police confirmed to Dawn.com that they have arrested Abdullah Umar, who they claimed was also involved in attack on a military mosque(Parade Lane) in December 2009 resulting in the killing of more than 37 people.

Police claims that Umar got injured when Zulfiqar’s FC guard Farman fired on the attackers who were riding a motorcycle accompanied by accomplices in a taxi cab. Abdullah Umar is the son of a retired military colonel Khalid Abbasi who was court-martialed for his links with al Qaeda in 2003 and dismissed from service. He now lives in Murree.

According to police, Umar who received three bullets by the guard of Zulfiqar went to District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi and told doctors that he was fired upon by dacoits. Later he was shifted to a private hospital. He also registered a false FIR saying that he was fired upon by dacoits.

Police found his clue from the pistol and his mobile phone which were dropped at the site when he was whisked away by his accomplices in a taxi. One of the eye witnesses noted the taxi number which was traced to be registered in Gujranwala. The owner of the car told police that he rented it to a person from Mandi Bahauddin whose ID card turned out to be counterfeited.

But he incidentally left his thumb impression and signature on the deal signed with the taxi driver. The thumb impression was verified by NADRA and police arrested a person from Mandi Bahauddin who later told police about Abdullah Umar as the mastermind of Chaudhry Zulfiqar’s assassination.

Police finally arrested Umar from a private hospital in Rawalpindi three days ago and he is currently in critical condition at a government hospital under tight security.

Police on Thursday obtained a 14-day remand of Umar from an anti-terrorism court and are currently interrogating him.

Comment: Can somebody in the military explain to me why this scumbag's father is not in jail after having been court martialed in 2003 for links with Al Qaeda! And now he lives in Murree. What the hell??

Well, looks like the police did a serious investigation, so kudos to them.

THe FC guard who shot the attacker and guy who noted the number plate also deserve mention.

THe part of the attackers father being court martialled is very intriguing. I'd guess that since the Hizbut Tehrir case, MI keeps a closer look on court martialled folks.

NOw let's just hope courts do their job as well and don't get scared into letting the attacker go free.

ANother thing to note is how he went to a hospital after being shot. I've watched a fair few crime scene programs on TV and Nat Geo, and in the US, there is some law or regulation that in a gun shot injury, the patient is not discharged until police investigates. Similarly here in UAE, if you have a car accident, you cannot move your car from scene of crash until police comes and you can repair your car only after you get a NOC from police. This is to verify that the car wasn't involved in a crime. Is there something similar in Pakistan? A killer going into DHQ hospital just like that!

By Police, it means SIG of FIA which is also investigating benazir assassination and mumbai attacks. Though it took a month, but kaam pakka kia hai is dafa

Though in past, doctors would not treat patients with gun shots until an FIR was registered. Rule was relaxed on supreme court orders that doctors should provide treatment but it is also obligatory to notify police at same time. It seems, he bribed DHQ admin who didn't reported his gunshot wounds to police

Awesome.. regularly criticize Pervez Musharraf for his acts during his tenure...
how can we approve his decision of court martialing a col. in 2003?

I'm just wondering how the father, the retired colonel is roaming around freely having been convicted of links with Al Qaida in 2003. Apparently, he is the one who told the hospital his son was shot by robbers.

Well cant comment without knowing the specifics. The guy might have served his time...the Army laws are pretty strict so a guy with suspected Talibqn or Al Qaeda links can be cted upon by the Army but he can go scotch free if he is a civilian.
@Xeric can tell more about the specific jail term etc.

Another twist in story ( CIA = Crime investigation agency- Punjab police CID department name)

All these terrorists should be arrested before they can cause any damage to innocent Pakistan's. I don't understand how these major terrorists escape after every act of terrorism while CID and other police and agencies run after innocent people. Why has Malik Ishaq been released from jail once again despite committing huge crimes against Pakistan. Instead innocent people are framed on false charges of terrorism constantly.

I don't understand why these terrorists aren't eliminated before terrorist attacks take place.
