BALASORE (ODISHA): Two more rounds of medium range nuclear capable surface-to-air missile Akash were successfully test fired from a defence test facility off the Odisha coast against two unmanned aerial vehicles demonstrating its ‘killing’ efficiency on Wednesday.

With the consecutive successful test firings of the weapon system by the army personnel, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) seemed to have sent a ‘signal’ to the Indian army, which was recently reluctant to procure the missile system citing its poor result on the field.

Sources said altogether six rounds of the missiles were fired from the launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea in last three days. The missiles successfully destroyed the targets coordinated by the user. The missiles were fired against Pilot less target aircraft (PTA) Lakshya, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Banshee and Para-barrel, two times each.

Terming that the missions were ‘fantastic’, Project Director of Akash G Chandramouli said ‘killing’ would sound more robust than ‘hitting’ the targets. “All the missiles actually killed the targets coordinated by the user and more importantly all the tests were conducted by the army jawans. The weapon system successfully demonstrated its killing efficiency in different conditions,” he said.

Speaking exclusively to ‘The New Indian Express’, he said for the first time in the history of missile programme, Akash missile has achieved such great success in consecutive days. It is one of the best missiles in its class available in the world and it has immense export potential.

“There were different missions in different altitudes and different ranges. Starting from approaching and receding to crossing at small range, high range, lower altitude and higher altitude, the missile had a wonderful demonstration,” he claimed.

Asked whether it was a ‘befitting reply’ to army’s accusation on the efficiency of the missile system and interest on Israeli systems, Chandramouli said there is some sect of people who always would like to go outside. “But our performance is far better than others. In fact it is one of the best world class weapons as of now,” he added.

More than 250 industries are engaged in production and supply of various subsystems/components with military/aerospace grade quality for Akash missile and ground systems, which have been developed by the DRDO.

The missile is capable of engaging aerial threats upto a distance of approximately 25 kms. The multi target, multi directional, all weather air-defence system consisting of surveillance and tracking radars, can fly at supersonic speed of around 2.5 Mach and reach a high altitude of 18 kms and as low as 30 meters.

A source from Hyderabad however informed that the British-made UAV Banshee reportedly outperformed the indigenous PTA Lakshya while providing battle field support to check technical parameters during the user trials.

“While once the Lakshya failed to perform during alignment with the missile system, another was successful. But Banshee proved its worth in both the trials and during alignment too. This time Banshee performed better than the Lakshya,” he claimed.

Now if these Army guys abuse the indigenous weapons they must be Court Martialled

We should not allow the Army and Airforce people to sabotage the Indigenous systems
They aren't sabatogaing anything, they are stating facts, the IA aren't refusing the Akash- they have plaved follow-on order for it (as are the IAF). It's not their fault if some idiots in the media take what they say and twist it.

There are agents in Indian Defence Forces on Russian payroll.....

Nothing wrong with Akash, army needs a QRSAM like Like SA 8,SPYDER and Sterla to accompany armor formation, though all of these are either obsolete, low range and require additional logistics in case of Akash.

SA 8 OSA was the first and perfect system to accompany armor formation since its engagement Radar and Missile on Same platform.

They didn't question the Akash's abilities but pointed out they had a need for other systems (QR-SAM) in addtion to the Akash and the media entirely misinterprated (perhaps intentionally) such comments.

Sir what i recall is that Indian Army didnt object to the accuracy etc of Akash missiles but their main objection was a longer reaction time required by Akash missile. U can comment better if they were justified in their this claim or if anything else was there. Also IN was quoted citing "stabilisation problems" as hurdle in inducting Akash and i guess this might not be that a big problem for DRDO to address.

Exactly, which is why I said they were not doubting the ability of the Akash but were making a valid point that they needed something in addtion to it to do what the Akash had never been designed to do ie move with the IA's IBGs with the ability to deploy to the frontline and provide rapid interception cover to entire battle formations ie a QR-SAM.

Naturally the Akash cannot compete with a canisterised vertically launched QR-SAM in terms of reaction times.

The IN never considered inducting the Akash as it can't be fired from a VLS and is on the bulkier side for them.

But Sir IAF is inducting Spyder units from February 2017 onwards and they are also inducting something like15 Akash missile squadrons. With few differences here and there and comparitively longer deployment time of Akash (which is my view should not be a matter of concern for IAF is they use Akash squadrons as permanently stationed at criticle installations), why IAF is inducting almost two similar systems? Why go for Spyder when Akash is there?

1) You're absolutely right about the IAF's needs being different to the IA's because their assets will static
2) The IAF already has the SPYDER (it has been inducting it for about 4 years now)

The IAF is going for a mix of SPYDER and Akash, the SPYDER system will have superior performance just by virtue of the missiles having their own active seekers (the Akash-1 is beam riding) and thus the two systems are being inducting to compliment each other and ensure a greater kill probability and superior defences for critical IAF installations.

Sir wishlists are always high and if one keeps on giving free hand to people out there then its the indegenous systems that suffer and foregin maal lobby plays more actively to malign local systems. I say IAF shud ve trusted Akash and waited till complete deployment of Akash rather than simultaneously go for both.
