KARACHI, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Pakistan has appointed Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik as chairman of loss-making Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the information minister has said.

A new chief executive officer will also be named soon to replace Musharraf Rasool Cyan, who was removed last month by Pakistan’s top court after it found irregularities in his appointment.

Malik’s appointment comes days after the carrier was sanctioned by the Pakistan Stock Exchange for not complying with bourse rules, a move which sent PIA shares tumbling.

“Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik has been appointed as the new chairman of PIA. He is a serving Air Marshal and an excellent professional,” information minister Fawad Chaudhry said at a press conference on Thursday.

He said the decision was taken at a cabinet meeting headed by new Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Pakistan’s new government that came to power in July has made one of its priorities the revival of state-owned businesses. Khan’s government has vowed to restructure the airline after previous efforts to privatise the carrier failed. (Reporting by Syed Raza Hassan; Editing by Saad Sayeed snd Darren Schuettler)

Hope that once pride of nation stand against on its feet we pakistanis dont see greater good but we sacrifice good for less time has come to be sincere with country and its organs

  • Pakistan International Airlines
  • Pakistan Steel Mills
  • Pakistan Railways

Need to all be running 100% efficiency , and making 2 Billion Dollar Profit Each , in order to take Burden off Pakistani Economy

And it is as simple as one can put it

Plus the Tax Collection figures

The Mega Corporations have to be Example of Dedication / Spirit of Pakistan , if these institutes are not fixed it reflects the state of mindset in people

i think we should not appoint any serving armed forces official for loss making entity as if it is not fixed due to govt corruption all blame will be on our armed forces.

The people only understand discipline if they believe those ordering it are serious. The people know the military is serious. Appointing the military is what you call a "Hail Mary Pass". If all else fails, go all out on a risky option, but it can payoff big if you succeed. Lets hope our Quarterback (Captain) Imran Khan has a good line up with these military officers.

PIA is the only airline where chief executive are either retired pilots or air chief not the business executives.
Exactly, this is outdated thinking that pilots can run an orginization of this size, specialist business executives are who take an organization to profit not professional pilots, the skill set needes in both jobs is miles apart.

Military Discipline and the best Civilian Expertise; Groves and Oppenheimer. In a country like Pakistan, reforms are needed on a war footing.

And yet, it was an Army general who last turned Steel Mills to profitability.

you are right but one man cannot fix problem alone if other people not cooperate with him and provide him with wrong information. It would be much better retired person from armed forces should be given this task.Armed forces have knowledge of eqquipment and other operating matters of the airline but for finance and corporate matter they have to rely on civilian staff which I doubt is politically influenced

I understand where u are coming from but the fact still remians that running an organization for profit and flying a plane requires very different skill sets.

And yet, it was an Army general who last turned Steel Mills to profitability.
Im not against retd military appointments in govt instituions if they could instill the fear of god into the workforce but then they need to have specialist business executives as their advisors to guide them how to take the airline into profitability. An authoritarian at the head still can suplement expertise in a certain field, wouldnt u agree.

musharaf was hardly cotrolling steel mills and though it was profitable but on the verge of breakeven at end of his tenure and he was going to privatise it with fear that it may go in loss soon but was stopped by supreme court

Both of you are right, Civilian Experts are the key, and it is not a one man operation. How about Merging PIA with one of the Private Airlines (after proper vetting of their books) but keeping the PIA name, and the government retaining some ownership. The management of the Private Airline would know the local industry and regional options an could expand on a for profit model. All extra facilities and staff would be downsized, while those retained would be retrained up industry standards. Performance reviews and Customer Feedback would dictate staff retention and the direction of the airlines, not politics.

You fail to understand that the army is the largest public sector organization in Pakistan and a general in part plays the role of CEO for a part of this organization. Especially if they gain experience in logistics.

There could be an argument made that the army doesn't make money. But in the case of Pak Army, they figured very soon that the politicians will starve them, so the army actually has money making enterprises - for better or worse, right or wrong. In case of Arshad Malik, he has the experience of money making Thunders.

Here is what I am looking forward to. In cooperation with China or Russia, PIA now starts local production of a commercial aircraft. Imagine the possibilities. Wish him good luck. May Allah Help him make the right decisions for Islam, Muslims, and Pakistan. Aameen.

The guy overlooking it was a (retired?) General. I forget his name....
