Air-to-air missile Astra successfully test-fired

ASTRA is an Indian product. It will take time to mature and we are patient enough to let it take its time.

In the mean time recent reports have also suggested that the IAF has shown interest in procuring the Novator K-100 missile from Russia with a range of 300-400 km

Enjoy!

Novator K-100 is AWACS killer, Its not valuable against aircrafts coz of its speed and size.

In first day... 100 novotar will be fired to take your 10 AWACS on the air...
in the second day.... 300 Astra will be fired to take your 100 F-16....
in the 3rd day ... 250 Astra will be fired to take your 250 JF-17..

;) ;)

nice joke!!!!

Indian Guidance Systems are One Among the best in the world, The Designs and Material Science India has Come a Long way to Have Confidently taken up Simultaneous ICBM Tasks of Agni 5 and Agni 6 Under two Different Leaderships.... This Certainly Makes India and Aspiring Country, India has and Will be Criticized for its developments as Is Most Expected from naysayers...

It is not indian media ... dont make things up.

Another point is Pakistan has never in its history has had a failed test. What do you think the odds are ?

Balasore: India on Friday carried out the ballistic flight test of Astra -- Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile -- from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur.

The missile was fired around 0950 hours, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said, adding two more tests are likely to be conducted in the next two days.

The missile is envisaged to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in the head-on mode at a range of 80 km and in tail-chase mode at 20 km.

"The main purpose of today's trial is to gauge the performance of the motor, propulsion system and the configurations of the vehicle and aero-dynamics evaluation," said a DRDO scientist.

The data is being analysed by the scientists to ascertain the outcome of the trial.

The missile, after its final trials, would be integrated with fighter aircraft Su-30 MKI. Astra missiles would also be carried by MiG-29 and Light Combat Aircraft Tejas.

Astra, which uses solid propellant, can carry a conventional warhead of 15 kg. It is the smallest of the missiles developed by the DRDO in terms of size and weight.

It is 3.8-metre long and has a diameter of 178 mm with an overall launch weight of 160 kg. The missile could be launched from different altitudes. It can cover 110 km when launched from an altitude of 15 km, 44 km when fired from an altitude of eight km and 21 km when the altitude is sea-level.

DRDO officials said it is more advanced than the similar class of missiles of the US, Russia and France. The missile’s captive flight tests from Su-30MKI were carried out near Pune in November 2009 when seven sorties were conducted.

Astra’s first flight trial took place on May 9, 2003 from the ITR at Chandipur.

The bold part makes me mad, we have not even developed it yet and look at the tall claims already. This has been a trend with these guys, someone should teach them how to provide details to media.

Oh my god.....these people really don't have any life....i mean who will go to this extent ?/ :)

IAF have superior A2A missles then ASTRA, which can change the course in mid way.

True, IAF have few most advanced missiles and almost all are available except few Chinese one which don't worth.

ASTRA is Head on missile....this means it will work only when target aircraft is flying towards the attacker.
 Noo, Who told it to you? every missile have longer range when target is approaching toward it and shorter range when target is moving away from it. It is applicable to all missiles in the world.

When the target is coming toward the missile (HEAD ON) the Relative speed of missile is higher (Missile speed + target speed). So it can be fired at a longer distance.

When target is moving away from the missile (Tail chase) the relative speed is lower ( Missile speed - Target speed). So it will travel shorter relative distance before the fuel is over.

Missile flight time is limited by the stored fuel. The distance covered is decided by Relative speed.

Its integrated with Active radar homing, this means that the aircraft with radar warning receiver like JF,F-16 & Mirage Rose would be aware that an incoming missile is approaching them.ASTRA will be tracked by AWACS, and modren fighter Aircrafts which r equipped with radar having range more then 50 KM.

And so is Raytheon AIM-120 AMRAAM,R-77,R-27,R-37, meteor,Derby which are considered best in the world.

It is true that Radar warning receiver will make target aware of incoming Missile. This gives them sufficient time to take countermeasures.but because of the accuracy and resistance to ECM of Active Radar homing method there may not be much they can do to avoid being intercepted.

The Radar on missile Tracks the Target, and the missile is typically going to be much closer to the target than the launching Fighter jet. During the terminal phase, the tracking can be much more accurate and also have better resistance to ECM Because as missile approaches the Target the Guidance will be more and more strong.Active radar homing missiles have best kill probabilities.

I feel even F-7PG with Grifo-MG radar can track it.

True, He will be aware that his death Warrant is issued and in mean time he can say Allah Hafiz on Radio Transmitter:argh:

:wave::wave::rofl:
