Air-to-air missile Astra successfully test-fired

Given the French will charge us close to 2 Million per A2A missile, ASTRA is the way to go. We should buy some foreign technology to see how our systems fare against them but longer term it should be ingeniousness production that should be encouraged.

Actually, the mica is far superior. It has tvc and can be used as both short range and bvr missile and has active radar as well as infrared homing. Chances of escaping when both variants are fired is next to zero.
It has a range of 60km, but that is at an altitude of 11km, while the range of astra ( 80km) is actually given at altitude of 15km where hardly any air fights take place, the useful range of astra is 45km (at reasonable altitude)

modern air to air missiles have to do upto 40G maneuver so almost all modern air to air have TVC capability

IAF have superior A2A missles then ASTRA, which can change the course in mid way.

ASTRA is Head on missile....this means it will work only when target aircraft is flying towards the attacker.
Its integrated with Active radar homing, this means that the aircraft with radar warning receiver like JF,F-16 & Mirage Rose would be aware that an incoming missile is approaching them.

ASTRA will be tracked by AWACS, and modren fighter Aircrafts which r equipped with radar having range more then 50 KM. I feel even F-7PG with Grifo-MG radar can track it.

ASTRA is an Indian product. It will take time to mature and we are patient enough to let it take its time.

In the mean time recent reports have also suggested that the IAF has shown interest in procuring the Novator K-100 missile from Russia with a range of 300-400 km

Enjoy!

ASTRA is way to go Good Luck DRDO and in next 5 years i think ASTRA will be evolved to one of the best in A2A every thing must have a start and i am happy we have started.

@MZUBAIR
Our pakistani pilots are bold , They ll not show back to our planes so head on missile is enough for us.

at 14:30 Check that Astra has TVC and AVC
at 18:00 check that astra has back to turn maneuvering
at 24:30 check that Astra will have dual mode seeker

In first day... 100 novotar will be fired to take your 10 AWACS on the air...
in the second day.... 300 Astra will be fired to take your 100 F-16....
in the 3rd day ... 250 Astra will be fired to take your 250 JF-17..

;) ;)

India tests Astra air-to-air missile - Brahmand.com

India tests Astra air-to-air missile
BALASORE, ORISSA (PTI): India on Friday carried out the ballistic flight test of Astra – beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile – from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near here.

The missile was fired around 0950 hours, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said, adding two more tests are likely to be conducted in the next two days. :yahoo::cheers:

The missile is envisaged to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in the head-on mode at a range of 80 km and in tail-chase mode at 20 km.

“The main purpose of today's trial is to gauge the performance of the motor, propulsion system and the configurations of the vehicle and aero-dynamics evaluation," said a DRDO scientist.

The data is being analysed by the scientists to ascertain the outcome of the trial.

The missile, after its final trials, would be integrated with fighter aircraft Su-30 MKI. Astra missiles would also be carried by MiG-29 and Light Combat Aircraft Tejas.

Astra, which uses solid propellant, can carry a conventional warhead of 15 kg. It is the smallest of the missiles developed by the DRDO in terms of size and weight.

It is 3.8-metre long and has a diameter of 178 mm with an overall launch weight of 160 kg. The missile could be launched from different altitudes – it can cover 110 km when launched from an altitude of 15 km, 44 km when fired from an altitude of eight km and 21 km when the altitude is at sea-level.

The missile’s captive flight tests from Su-30MKI were carried out near Pune in November 2009 when seven sorties were conducted.

Astra’s first flight trial took place on May 9, 2003 from the ITR at Chandipur.

No one will trust..........solid reasons and refernces req

The Tejas has a length of just 13.20m,height of 4.40m and wingspan of 8.20m and it is the world's smallest fighter jet and morever it is made up mostly of Carbon Fibres Composites which unlike metal surfaces dont illuminate the target but absorb the radar waves thus reducing the RCS of the aircraft and this makes the Tejas inherently small. As far as the Israeli missiles are concerned Tejas will use Derby BVRAAM and if you dont believe me then check this http://www.india-defence.com/reports-5100&wsi=135da5a375d0c0c0&ei=cpnWTd35NoHmkAWw3PD9Ag&wsc=tb

Some good things we would like to have in ASTRA-2 is lock on after launch... able to attack both in BVR as well as WVR.. just like Derby...

JF-17 and F-16 both have more then 100 KM radar range.......no chance ur Last Chance Aircraft (LCA) can ever come close to 50KM.

LCA is Meant for Dog Fight, Equipped with finest Of Jammers and Supported by the best available AWAC in the Arms Market... What Makes You think LCA would Not give a Flypass over your Pilots Head Un detected?

Its Completely Un realistic to Mention that any of your Aircrafts can Chase it down within 50 KM, Come on... Just because Its Made in India dosent mean you completely neglect the very purpose of this Aircraft...
