Air-to-air missile Astra successfully test-fired

Problem with India is that every thing is available for us

Even if Astra is operation so i think IAF want them in large no. as we know India is ready to purchase MICA

then why buying expensive MICA for Mirage ?

Astra Missile is different missile:

1.) Range

MICA range = from < 500 m to > 60 km

ASTRA range = 80-100 km head on, 20 km tail chase

2.) Warhead

MICA Warhead = 12 kg focused splinters HE warhead

ASTRA Warhead = 15 kg HE fragmentation directional warhead

Astra missile is superior missile

But MICA is ready made missile that is operational and IAF has confidence on it that it can hit the targets precisely in its range.

Our indigenous or JV missiles and projectss that have bright future are
1.Astra
2.Nirbhay
3.Brahmos2
4.Agni-3
5.Agni5-MIRV
6.PAD/AAD
7.Tejas MK2/MK1 Naval Version
8.Kaveri Engine
9.Arjun Tank
10.AMCA
11.Arihant class subs
12.Indeginous warships
13.Indeginous A/c carrier
14.Nuke reactor for carriers
15.SLBM's
16.UCAV's
17.DRDO's AWACS
18.LCH
19.FGFA
20.Laser Weapons/ASAT weapons

IAF have superior A2A missles then ASTRA, which can change the course in mid way.

ASTRA is Head on missile....this means it will work only when target aircraft is flying towards the attacker.
Its integrated with Active radar homing, this means that the aircraft with radar warning receiver like JF,F-16 & Mirage Rose would be aware that an incoming missile is approaching them.

ASTRA will be tracked by AWACS, and modren fighter Aircrafts which r equipped with radar having range more then 50 KM. I feel even F-7PG with Grifo-MG radar can track it.

Its a head on missile? No problem
Suppose Tejas fire an astra after detecting Jf-17/f-16 at 50km range will your fighters show the back to our planes?
Absolutely no because your pilots are bold and daring.
So astra will hit the target.

JF-17 and F-16 both have more then 100 KM radar range.......no chance ur Last Chance Aircraft (LCA) can ever come close to 50KM.

Tejas has a low RCS & it has also got Israeli missiles.Israeli are better than Chinese ones.

Its not about RCS, its about our superior EW suite used in LCA which is believed to be one of the best in the world. JF-17 and F-16 can't do a with those passive radars.

imported weapons are only good in a short time war..
in a long duration war , you are stuck once your imported stockpit of weapons get consumed..

this year 2011,all the missile and launch vehicles have been succesful.....Till now no failure..
Good going..

No astra will be ready asap. We are waiting for the final trials.Astra’s first flight trial took place on May 9, 2003 from the ITR at Chandipur.
So 11 years seem some thing wrong , by this time astra must be developed fully and they are evaluating results.

Astra is gonna take a long time yet. There hasn't even been any flight testing or air launch testing of the missile - only ground tests have been conducted so far.
comparing with the meteor - which had its ALD from the grippen in 2006 but will still only be ready by 2014, I dont think the astra will be ready by 2015

Even tejas has 100 km range detection. Those planes wont be able to detect Tejas at 100km since it has good jamming systems.
So take this as mission parameters.
2Tejas and one mki has been given orders to strike the targets at 100km deep inside pakistan. Your radars will detect the tejas at 20km before it crosses the border. Soon you will make preperations to intercept the plane. There will be green signal for mki to lead the attack. It will travel with mach speeds and will join Tejas at border. Pak sends two aircrafts to counter these. The Tejas hides behind MKI to confuse the enemy that only one plane is coming. There will be an airbase at the strike location. Soon F-16' will be send to counter mki. Being detected on radar Mki immediately fires 2 astras and each tejas fires one. Will ur planes turn back? Absolutely no. So they ll be prey of astra. even if ur fighters fire missiles, Mki's can easily counter them in head on mode by taking curve positions using extensive maneuvers and tejas can evade them at low altitudes easily more over it has good jamming systems and ew suite. This chance is not there for ur fighters as they need to defend the sites thus falling in to prey of astra. A2g missiles by mki can destroy airbase radars and sam sites. Thus tjas and kmi can prove to be good combo with astra misiles.
