Indian officials are plainly worried that a food crisis will afflict major cities and villages within the next three months because of drought. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi warned the nation last week to pre pare for hardships because of dwindling food supplies.

Although officials here de cline to discuss the amounts of food needed to ward off mass hunger, it is widely as sumed that 4 million to 4.5 million tons must be found un til the end of October, when harvesting of the main crop starts.

Food shortages have already struck Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Orissa and Bihar, and there have been riots and reports of starvation in these states.
