Afghanistan set to get huge supply of military gear

@Omar1984,

Aren't you the same guy who got banned last month for talking ill? And 'Juice' is not even Indian mate. He is American. :)

ANA is the only possible way for Afghanistan to function and prosper. Because US would never allow talibans to come back in the power. So, compromise is the best solution.

Plus Kabul and all the major cities are near the Afghan-Pak border so obviously consulates and embassy will be near borders. Come on mate. :) You can do better than that. :) And we too have so many Afghan students studying in India on scholarships and so many other Afghans getting trained in India. :)

It is taliban fans like you because of whom Afghans hate Pakistan and people like 'blain2' have to do explaining.

.
Dropping US$2.7 Billion worth of military equipment to an army which has to submit spent casings after training to ensure that no one nicked some away in their boxers for selling in the black market ? Not a bright move, it would have been better if NATO had delayed this move until the ANA is a more dependable force. For now, every 1 in 4 soldiers is a deserter(i.e: joins the Taliban) and 3 out of every 4 will resign or go AWOL within their first year in service. Who says they won't desert or go AWOL with some of the expensive equipment they will be manning ?

These are old statistics. These events were more common when proper education plans were not in place for ANA conscripts. However, situation has improved by now as proper education plans are in place for them now.

Maybe US/NATO want to boost the morale of ANA. When people will notice that ANA is getting more organized and stronger with passage of time; they will flock towards it and support it.

I made the above post in light of stats provided to me by the US DoD in 2008. I doubt there has been any "earth-shaking" change in these stats ever since, however, I am open to discussion if you have any up-to-date stats.

Every year, their is massive improvement in ANA development program. 2008 is too old to consider now.

Look for reports released during 2010 and 2011. You may get your answer.

This is the current status of ANA: Afghan National Army update, May 2011 - The Long War Journal

Significantly better then in 2008.

If they waited that they'd still be waiting in 2014. Besides 2.7 billion is change for the US whatever its financial straits.

It has more to do with the consequences of this equipment ending up in enemy hands than the cost incurred in procuring it.

Till political settlement of Afghanistan these decisions will be worthless. Here are many people talking about education & better status of ANA, but in fact they are listening to their self derived opinions. We are not against the restructuring of Afghan Army but still there is lot of work to do before making any positive prediction over professional ability of ANA..

The level of literacy and training has seen improvement over the past few years but unfortunately, losses are mounting at a record high as a result of which morale is low. Which leads to desertions.

It is not easy for such large quantity of heavy equipment ending up in enemy hands. Otherwise, Taliban would have become a fully mechanised and mobile fighting force by now.

This is why heavy equipment will be needed. To give ANA the advantage in conducting military operations.

Soldiers would feel safer sitting inside heavy military vehicles then purely walking on foot all the time.

.
I don't mean that the entire shipment will be taken and neither am I concerned about the vehicles. The technicals that the Taliban operate are already optimised for the terrain, quick, deadly and inexpensive. I am more concerned about wireless sets and other communication equipment falling into Taliban hands which will make their command and control structure more effective. The Taliban already operate a large number of American Wireless/satellite phones sets taken from the Americans.

Well considering how much Iraqi and Afghani development aid ended up missing, that is a definite danger.

.
it says aircrafts?? would that be fighter aircrafts???like F-18 or F-16's???
the U.S.-led coalition will deliver 22,000 vehicles, including 514 new four-wheeled “mobile strike force” armored vehicles yet to be used in Afghanistan, 44 airplanes and helicopters, 40,000 weapons, and tens of thousands of radios and other pieces of communications gear.
