Afghanistan set to get huge supply of military gear

This is certainly bad news for Pakistan!

This can easily be translated to more attacks on border posts, army convoys, girl schools and border villages.

It's clear final push for fueling civil war in Pakistan is on horizon.

Only solution is pre-emptive strike on northern alliance terrorists and their masters, across our southern border.

I cant understand you and couple of other guys, why you jump to shoot the non existent NA in every opportunity? where will you strike them? in their houses and offices? they dont exist as military power anymore, the gov of Afghanistan and NATO totally disarmed them. And how will they create civil war in paksitan? you are unbelieveable.

Read post 5 and this message.
lol we all know this hardware will get in the hands of taliban, just like it has happen many times before. and then taliban will use this equipment to do attaks in pakistan like the one on PN mehran. so in the end the harm will come to pakistanis

Some guys here are really funny! how on earth Northern Alliance would be a threat to Pakistan when they are totally disarmed via DDR! This government and it's every infrastructure, system, military etc.. is somehow indirectly assets of USA and it's alliance; they paid alot for this! anything against Afghanistan will be against USA and it's alliance, at least in the current scenario. Those who badly wait to see Taliban again controlling Afghanistan is a dream and it will stay as a dream! in fact a logical mind would never even dream it, they know Taliban are only controlling wild life in Afghanistan aka goats, sheeps, donkeys, cows etc.. Afghanistan's major population is living under government control. Lets be practical and don't make things difficult for each other, what really Pakistan got in destabilizing Afghanistan? both as Muslim countries should put their efforts for bringing peace and prosperity in the region and kick out this fundamentalism and extremism from their lands!

I haven't read previous posts on the thread, but you seem to be a reasonable guy. As much as I understand, many people here see the govt. (formerly the NA's people) aiding and abetting an occupying force and the Taliban resisting it, if their were a better alternative than the latter they'd have popular support here instead of the Ts. Maybe it's an over-simplistic view, but if you do live inside Afghanistan maybe you can break it down for us like it is.

First let me clear it bro that the govt isn't run by NA's people secondly there was a need to give share to such warlords and criminals in the government even USA didn't wanted this to happen but they had no other choice for completely eliminating the Taliban from Afghanistan, I remember USA bombarded and targeted Taliban for almost 3 weeks but there was no luck, they even grounded a group of forces in southern Afghanistan but they were all killed by Taliban so they asked Dostom and other NA warlords to assist them giving a free ground to Kabul at least; but USA played their second card by disarming all of these warlords and destroyed all of their small arms and heavy weapons underground stocks via 'Halo Trust' and crippled them so they can never wage a civil war in Afghanistan or do anything against USA in Urdu (Khassi kar diye gaye), I am sure with 1 or 2 more presidential elections these warlords will not find any place for themselves and we see it's example from the last presidential and parliamentarian elections they lost their seats significantly. Things are getting okay in Afghanistan, Afghanistan is not a country which it was 10 years ago and it will not be like now in 10 years ahead and ANA is not silly to do any thing against Pakistan by getting these toys they know Pakistan is strong enough to defend it self, why not live in peace?

Afghanistan set to get huge supply of military gear
Submitted 3 hrs 19 mins ago
NATO’s war planners call it the “iron mountain,” the $2.7 billion mass of military equipment that will be dropped on Afghanistan over the next eight months. But will the mountain be tall enough? Between now and next March, the U.S.-led coalition will deliver 22,000 vehicles, including 514 new four-wheeled “mobile strike force” armored vehicles yet to be used in Afghanistan, 44 airplanes and helicopters, 40,000 weapons, and tens of thousands of radios and other pieces of communications gear. “It’s an enormous amount of equipment, vehicles and weapons,” said one U.S. military official. Some Afghans, however, are looking at what the mountain’s missing, particularly fighter jets and tanks. Among them is Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak, who believes such sophisticated weaponry would intimidate the Taliban and keep neighbors Iran and Pakistan at bay.

If NATO and US forces were unable to reach their objectives in a decade through their most advanced weapons and training, that was to wipe out taliban and to neutralize pakistan. These weapons and gear would be a piece of cake... go ahead good move...

What you say is sensible.

My own view is that there is significant Tajik influence on the Afghan government and for various reasons this opinion usually is anti-Pakistan. I must offer this may be as a result of Pakistan's own fears over its western border and the way we react and also because many perceptions about Pakistan exist on the Tajik side which may not be entirely correct.

So in this situation, how do you move forward? In my mind, the one area that would considerably help the two sides is having closer military interaction so the mutual suspicions (Afghans believing the PA and the ISI are behind efforts to undermine the country and Pakistani suspicions that Afghan establishment is too close to India and that it will bring up the issue of Durrand line to destabilize the KP province) can be removed and both sides can realize what their key concerns are vis-a-vis the respective security policies. For Pakistan, having friends on the Tajik side would actually help drive the Pashtuns to come to an amicable understanding with other groups within Afghanistan and pave the way for a more stable representative government in Afghanistan.

Having Afghan military personnel attend training and joint exercises will have a very significant impact on the behaviour of the two countries over time.

I tend to push the military relationship angle because the cultural and trade links are already existing and yet have not helped calm the situation. The two standouts are the governmental and specifically security establishment setups in both of these countries. For Afghans, this would be an investment to be made (free of cost), and for Pakistan, it would be an opportunity to see the key Afghan military folks up close as well as have interaction at mid and small unit level and come to a comfort level so trust could be built.

I must say that I personally do not buy into the need for Pakistan to have a say over Afghanistan's matters. However the other side also needs to be mindful that Pakistan cannot afford to have an anti-Pakistan Afghan government that in the future would stir trouble along the Durrand line.

Bro, not only Tajiks but Pashtun too have anti-Pakistan opinions! I am Pashtun and I am witness of such things in many gatherings between our elders; but lets put this apart because being 'anti' doesn't mean it's a part of solution! As an Afghan living in Kabul and traveling to provinces I have seen major and significant influence of Pashtuns in the government and I am not telling this from my own stomach, do your research on every civil and military sectors of the government you will find out the truth but don't trust the mass media even they publish BS on internal issues of Pakistan and for me it doesn't matter who is who as long as they work for Afghanistan and that's more to the point!

I am also in favor of realistic and strong military co-operations between ANA and PA; but for the time being there are some internal and external pressure on Karzai though a group of Afghans are already under military training in Pakistan so as in India, Turkey and USA.

Okay I don't understand one thing?

Why do Pakistanis want to see blood-sucking Talibans back in power? Because the current government is apparently a US puppet and pro-India? I mean come on guys.

USSR wanted to expand. Result: Afghans paid the price.
USA wanted to break USSR. Result: Afghans paid the price.
Pakistan wanted to destabalise Afghanistan for their strategic gains. Result: Afghans paid the price.

But now US and Russia are at least trying to amend their mistake but Pakistan still wants to see Talibans in Afghanistan. No wonder why Pakistan is the least favored country in Afghanistan.

Not discounting that some Pashtuns would also have anti-Pakistan sentiments in Afghanistan, however the fact is that more Pashtuns live in Pakistan than in Afghanistan and I do not see this anti-Pakistani sentiment as a Pashtun wide phenomena.

The problem on hand is that Pakistan feels insecure about the whole Durrand line issue and also the uncertainty in Afghanistan. The only way this insecurity will reduce is if we are in each others faces and interacting at all levels on a very regular basis.

For many Pakistanis, the Tajiks and their supporters are an alien-race, not realizing that they are fellow Muslims and mostly Hannafi Sunni people (something in common with the vast majority of Pakistanis). I think many in Afghanistan also look at Pakistanis as something out of this world. In my own interactions, I have heard some really unreasonable comments about Pakistan almost to the point of ridiculous (akin to some ill informed sentiments shared by Pakistanis about Afghans).

Given that populations on both sides are prone to illiteracy and the resulting conspiracy theories, this mistrust will take some time to get over.

Pakistanis don't want Taliban. Aside from some very staunch supporters of Taliban, most Pakistanis do not want the extreme Taliban rule being forced on anyone. This is the reason that there is a war going on inside of Pakistan.

The support for Taliban is actually a support for people fighting against an occupation of their country (obviously Americans see it differently and those Afghans arrayed against the Taliban also see it differently). It would by hypocritical for Pakistanis to support the struggle against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and not feel similarly about the US one. Secondly, the presence of Pashtuns in the Pakistani social, political, religious and military spheres results in support for the Pashtuns in Afghanistan, which many consider to be for Taliban due to the fact that all Taliban are Pashtuns (but certainly not all Pashtuns are taliban).

For any sane Pakistani, the sufferings of the Afghans caught in this mess are disconcerting. However on top of this, you have layers of complications such as the territorial issues between the two countries and the insecurities of certain elements about each other on both sides and thus you see these complicated, yet not always principled stances.
