Long Live Pakistan

I had noticed this long ago and liked it.

If i say i never have ethnic issues in my mind then i am wrong, but there is one thing for certain that i dont put the ethnic interest before the interest of my country. and yes, sometimes i get a bit agitated if people unecessarily attack my ethnic group without realizing the situation. but it is always easy to debate with great people like yourself and explain my side of story and suffering and we can find a common ground to agree on it.

@ Ahmad I am bit naive on the issue of drugs cultivation in Afghanistan. Now the way as I see it as an outsider, the NATO forces are in control of areas in Afghanistan, and still the drugs cultivation is at its peak. Can you put some light on it that exactly what are these guys doing there to stop the mess.

bro, it depends on which area you talk, gov of afghanistan have always opposed the air poisoning of poppy fields, but some within the gov supported it, NATO guys also seem to be opposing the air poisoning. the reason they think air poisoning is not good because that will deprive the poor farmers from their livlihoods and without presenting an alternative that will prove counterproductive. one of the main tensions between karzai and his former deputy, Ahmad Zia Masoud was this air poisoning, Karzai didnt want it because of the above reason and Masoud wanted it poisoned because he was saying the other strategies didnt work and lets try to poison it at once then the farmers wont have another choice but to grow other legal stuff. in the north and west and some parts of east especially my province of Laghman with the exception of badakhshan province, the popply cultivation has gone down considerbaly, it is because the security is better and gov can implement the laws properly, they can also give help to the farmers to grow other things. one of the provinces which has zero poppy cultivation is the northern province of balkh, but more of such zero poppy areas are emerging.

Pakistan hunts for troops missing after Taliban attack

BBC Report

[Page last updated at 10:57 GMT, Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:57 UK]

The Pakistani army says it is searching for dozens of soldiers missing after their checkpoint on the Afghan border was attacked by the Taliban on Monday.

The Afghan Taliban said on Wednesday that it was holding up to 40 Pakistani troops after the raid in the Mohmand tribal area.

"We are looking for them," Pakistani army spokesman Athar Abbas said.

Maj Gen Abbas confirmed 40 Frontier Corps troops were missing and every effort was being made to find them.

Clashes

A senior security official in Mohmand tribal region told the BBC Urdu service that contact was lost with the missing soldiers after the attack on Monday by the Afghan Taliban in the Shonkarai area of Mohmand.

"Ten of the missing soldiers subsequently returned to their positions the same day, but about 40 are still missing," he said.

Meanwhile, Afghan military commander Gen Mohammad Afzal - based in the border province of Kunar - told the BBC that clashes have erupted between the Taliban and Pakistani border forces in the Mohmand and Bajaur areas for the the last five or six days.

Gen Afzal said that during this period, Pakistani soldiers mistakenly crossed into Afghan territory twice to seek shelter with local people.
He confirmed reports from Wednesday that between eight and 10 soldiers had been handed over to Pakistani consulate in the nearby city of Jalalabad.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan says that while attacks by the Taliban on border check posts are relatively routine, it is unusual for Pakistani soldiers to be held by the militants in Afghanistan.

A Taliban spokesman told the BBC on Wednesday that it was in fact holding Pakistani troops on both sides of the border after Monday's attack.

It said 30 soldiers were being held in Afghanistan and 10 in Pakistan after the checkpoint was overrun.

In the latest clashes in the area on Wednesday, the army said that 10 soldiers and 63 militants had been killed in fighting 20km (12 miles) from the border post.

"It was fierce fighting. We also sought air support to target militants' positions," Frontier Corps spokesman Maj Fazal-ur-Rehman told the Reuters news agency.

ISLAMABAD, June 17, 2010 (AFP) - Pakistan said on Thursday it had traced 14 soldiers who were among more than 50 reported missing after a weekend Taliban attack on their checkpoint.

Afghan authorities handed the troops to the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad after they crossed the border into eastern Afghanistan, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said.

"Fourteen soldiers have been handed over in Jalalabad consulate and they are being flown back to Pakistan," Abbas told AFP.

He said 11 had already returned while the rest remained missing.
Taliban militants attacked the soldiers' Gwar Pari post in Mohmand tribal district on Sunday, according to local administration and security officials.

A Taliban spokesman said its fighters killed seven soldiers and captured 10. But a security official Wednesday refused to confirm the Taliban claims, saying that "we have not seen the bodies".

Pakistani soldiers killed, missing in border clashes with militants
By the CNN Wire Staff
June 17, 2010

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- Three dozen Pakistani soldiers are missing after a Taliban attack on a Pakistani post along the Afghan border, the Pakistani military said Thursday.

The attack occurred Monday in Mohmand Agency, a district in Pakistan's federally administered tribal areas.

Two days later, Pakistani security forces launched raids in three areas of Mohmand Agency, killing 38 militants and capturing 23, the military said. Ten security officers were also killed.

Pakistani security forces are continuing the operations against militants in the tribal area of the country, which Washington considers the center of Taliban and al-Qaeda remnants.

The United States has been pushing Pakistani authorities to crack down on al Qaeda-linked groups believed to be operating in the largely ungoverned tribal areas, where clashes have not been uncommon in recent months.
