KABUL, April 19 (AFP) - Afghan troops tore down a new anti-Taliban fence erected by Pakistan on the border between the two countries Thursday, sparking a gunbattle which caused no casualties, officials said. The clash was the first since Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf announced plans earlier this year to fence 35 kilometres of his country's northwestern frontier to stop the movement of militants. Afghan defence ministry said in a statement that the fighting happened between the Afghan border town of Shkin and Angoor Adda in Pakistan's tribal belt. The Pakistani military was not immediately available for comment. “Today at 9:30 am (0500 GMT) the Afghan army moved to the area and removed the fence. Pakistani troops fired on our forces. The Afghan army returned fire,” an Afghan defence ministry statement said. It said that Afghan forces first reached the area on Tuesday, after which Pakistani troops immediately stopped work on the barbed wire fence and pulled back. “But unfortunately, taking advantage of the darkness of the night, the Pakistani forces again erected fences overnight Wednesday,” the statement said. The ministry said no casualties were reported. The statement said the Afghan government had begun diplomatic efforts to stop Pakistan fencing the border. (Posted @ 18:14 PST)

Pakistan for border fencing with Afghanistan

Kabul wants demarcation of Durrand Line

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday said it had formally approached Afghanistan for fencing its border to put an end to charges of cross-border infiltration.

Foreign Office spokesman Naeem Khan told journalists that Islamabad would take a decision on the proposal after hearing from Kabul.

Significantly, the announcement came hours before President Pervez Musharraf is due to visit the CENTCOM headquarters in Florida for interaction on issues including cooperation in containing terrorism in Afghanistan.

Observers are intrigued at the insistence of Pakistan on fencing of 2400 kilometres of rugged and mountainous terrain along Afghanistan. The initial reaction from Afghanistan is negative. The general but unofficial refrain from Kabul has been that Islamabad is not serious about the proposal.

What is more important, voices from Kabul have spoken about the need for Pakistan and Afghanistan to first demarcate the Durrand Line and settle the border issue. Some have even suggested that the fencing proposal by Pakistan is an attempt to legitimise the Durrand Line not accepted by Afghanistan.

Gen. Musharraf floated the idea of fencing during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last week and took everyone by surprise. The proposal follows months of complaints by Afghan and U.S. officials over Pakistan's alleged failure to rein in militants operating from its tribal areas. The criticism became stronger due to an upsurge in violence in the run-up to Afghanistan's parliamentary polls held on Sunday.

Afghan, Pakistan troops in border clash

There's been an exchange of fire between Afghan and Pakistani troops in the South Waziristan border area.

No casualties were reported.

Both sides blame each other for provoking the clash.

Reports from Kabul say the firing began after Afghan troops began tearing down a border fence being erected by Pakistan in disputed territory.

Pakistan says it's fencing the area to stop the alleged cross-border movement of al-Qaida and Taliban
insurgents.

what the hell is afghanistans problem do they really think that they will be able to take back the territory that they claim is there. what are they going to do attack us. i think that pakistani army should mine the whole damn place and kill any afghan soldier that comes with in a kilometer near the border.

Perhaps we should enter in Afghanistan and remove Karzai or American puppets. Give it a title.. Pakistan to send its troops in Afghanistan to keep its border safe. To remove Taliban, and delete Al-Qaida permanently. Bush should be happy with it. Perhaps the aid will be increased from $3.4 Billion to $9.2 Billion?

Well the problem with Durrand line is that Afghan wanted to remove the barbed wire, because they want to move freely b/w Pakistan and Afghanistan border, for exchange of opium, heroine and other drugs from afghan to Pakistan, and Halal Animals from Pakistan to Afghan, This is the only reason that rates of meat in Pakistan has been increased roughly.

Besides, Musharrruf should reply karzai with power.
