A local Taliban commander and 50 fighters have been killed in overnight fighting in Sangin in Helmand province, the Afghan interior ministry said.

Afghan forces have been trying to recapture the area from the Taliban, who claim to control the district.

Afghan officials said they retook key buildings in a counter-attack, while the US carried out air strikes.

The ministry named the dead commander as Mullah Nasir, a confidant of Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

Strategically located, and a centre for opium production, Sangin would be a significant gain for the Taliban.

Fighting around the town has escalated in the past week, and by Wednesday the militants said they had captured all of Sangin, pinning down government troops in an army barracks.

This was denied by the Afghan defence ministry, who said fighting was continuing and that reinforcements had been sent.

The interior ministry said the Afghan army and police commandos launched an operation late on Wednesday, leading to the deaths of the Taliban commander and his fighters.

Several local officials said the district governor's office and police headquarters in Sangin's centre had been retaken.

"Last night fresh forces arrived, they provided ammunitions and food to forces at the battalion and launched a counterattack," Helmand senator Hashim Alokozai said.

"They recaptured the district and police HQ and the wounded were evacuated. We hope they will make further progress today."

It remains unclear whether the Taliban were fully in control of Sangin, with Afghan officials giving conflicting information about the state of their advance.

Meanwhile US planes launched two air strikes on Taliban positions shortly before midnight on 23 December, a Nato spokesman said.

There were a couple clowns who were nearly dancing in joy while the Talis were supposedly making some progress in Helmand. There is no progress for Talis in Helmand its just their mass grave, period!''

Brother A-Team so much pent up aggression is never good for your health. According to Bilal Sarwary in the last three months alone the ANSF has suffered 1200 fatalities in Helmand and despite building extra coffins the government was 200 short. In addition, 25 ANA solders are without food for the 5th day running in Lal Jan Clinic inside Sangin Bazaar. The situation looks bleak in Afghanistan and the government will fall eventually unless they change there attitudes.

Its interesting How Taliban are being killed this year,
  1. Taliban take Some District or town stay in it for some days. Afghan Forces Suffer little or no Casualty.
  2. Pakistanis on Social Media and this forum rejoice like they got glimpse of heaven.
  3. Afghan Forces Set Up a Perimeter, Go in with US air support
  4. Talibs are literally killed like pigs, their corpses litter the streets. (300+ killed in Kunduz in 4 hours)
  5. Pakistanis Go quiet, Say Aghanistan is loosing ground to Talibs, the government is useless. etc etc
To be Honest the entire Drama being played out gives Two things,

a.The Pakistan Army has reasons to worry , thier duplicity is being exposed.

b. Afghans are playing it nicely, Draw them out in the open Kill them by the numbers, Soon with more training and equipment kill ratio will increase.

Towards what?

The Kabul regime must recognize:

1) Durand Line
2) Reclaim its citizens from Pakistan in which 5 million refugees have been sheltered, fed and clothed
3) Stop its intelligence services in supporting Mullah Radio in Kunar Province,
4) Accept the idea that Pakistan will never allow Indian trade to pass through our territory

How is the above linked to Afghan's fight against Taliban?

Killing your own kin over petty issues? This is haram you know?

How is the above linked to Afghan's fight against Taliban?

1) When Afghanistan continues to pursue the doctrine of contesting the border of the Durand Line, then Pakistan will use any means necessary to weaken its internal structure and this is realpolitik in international relations theory.
2) The Taliban fighters who do escape into Pakistan normally hide in refugees camps, therefore by taking these citizens back into there own country two birds can be killed with one stone. Preventing safe havens in Pakistan and the Government in Islamabad can focus its resources on the indigenous population rather than foreigners.
3) Since certain elements within the NDS are supporting the TTP, then its only natural to return the gesture in kind in the form of the Taliban.
4) Every time we reject Kabul's proposal on Indian trade politicians in the Northern Alliance faction make bold and aggressive statements towards Pakistan, thus the ISI loves to remind them of there place in the food chain hierarchy.

You forgot to mention the fifth point: "Echo the twerp should mind his own business"

yeah they are becoming smart, instead of going after talis which needs a lot of manpower. Invite them into a trap and fight from a position of strength.

Every one knows the real reason for talis existence.

Good... In fact excellent. This was a close one but a counter attack it seems was very effective and the Taliban are being removed from the district. However I would happily celebrate when the Taliban are unable to advance on a city.

Still a huge supporter of peace talks and Taliban should seriously focus on peace talks as well rather than constant fighting...

Perhaps its time to go after jallabad Isis as well before they have a chance to take root.
