Children of Afghan families returning from Pakistan who don't go to school and have no access to education are increasingly at risk of early marriage and child labour, according to a survey released on Wednesday.

The survey by Save the Children reveals an alarming crisis in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province where the polling took place among returnees from Pakistan.

It warns the situation could deteriorate further as more than 3,500 Afghans return from Pakistan on a daily basis after Islamabad tightened regulations on those living illegally in the country.

So far this year, more than 650,000 Afghans have returned from Pakistan, with the majority planning to stay in Nangarhar, at least until the end of winter. Hundreds of thousands more Afghans are expected to be repatriated in the coming months.

The survey is based on 379 interviewees conducted by Save the Children between Oct 28 and Nov 8 in five districts in Nangarhar. The poll gave a 5% margin of error.

Among the returnees, many have no money and lack any sort of documents or ID papers.

Parents facing poverty often feel the only stable choice they can make is to arrange a marriage for their child or to bring the children into the workforce, the survey found.

“We are really concerned about the risks that are threatening the children and the future of the children if the situation continues,” said Bahirullah Wyaar, an adviser at Save the Children in Kabul.

“If the children, especially the girls, do not have access to education, it puts them at the risk of early marriages.”

Also, many of the poorest of the poor have no resources, which may “force the children to work on the streets”, Wyaar added.

In June, Pakistan's government extended a deadline for Afghan refugees deemed to be staying in Pakistan illegally to return home by the end of the year or face deportation.

But although Kabul welcomed the extension, Afghanistan's refugees and repatriation minister, Sayed Hossain Alemi Balki, said he wanted it extended until December 2017.

He also said Pakistani police were harassing refugees, and said Islamabad should not forcibly repatriate Afghan refugees when the new deadline expires.

Millions of Afghans fled their country to neighbouring Pakistan and Iran during the 1979-1989 Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, the brutal civil war of 1992-1996 between US-backed rebel groups that fought the Soviets and again after the Taliban came to power in 1996 creating one of the world's largest refugee populations.

Both Pakistan and Iran have been pressing for them to leave.

Pakistani authorities have also said that a number of militants are hiding in refugee camps, creating a security risk for the country.

In the Save the Children survey, Ana Locsin, the group's director in Afghanistan, is quoted as saying that “part of the problem is that many repatriated families left stable jobs and lives in Pakistan and are now watching the few savings they have dwindle away knowing they have little prospect of income”.

“Many are living out in the open, or in tents, so they have no real semblance of shelter, let alone security,” she added.

“They often feel they have little choice but to send their child to find work or to marry off their daughters."

Still
Doesnt it hurt to read such a thing like that?
I mean we can keep the children as our own.

Make them responsible into our own society, its a huge plus for us if we were able to do that.

Its sad, still.
These Namak Harams need a slap and should be sent back to their country and look in rural sindh and balochistan there are children who are dying there especially in Tharpakar.

May Allah subhanu help them , ya Allah subhanu give me chance to help these poor , . . My heart bleeds seeing the first pic of poor jobless father holding his three children looking so helpless .
Not our problem and realistically we should be focusing on our own people.
not our problem if we want to protect our children we must stop thinking of afghan children

How can you be so hard heart ?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "If you love the poor and bring them near you. . .God will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1376

The Prophet also said: "The people before you were destroyed because they inflicted legal punishments on the poor and forgave the rich."- Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Hadith 778

well we r thinking on the basis of nationalism we shud think as a muslims that we shud help these kids

What these poor harmless children were doing against us that we thrown them out ?
Of course we should look for own poor people too but throwing these kids out , we've destroyed the lives of these poor muslims of another land .

I hope things get better .

Feeling sad for these children. They have to suffer for the choices made by the northern alliance d|ckheads that are ruling Afghanistan.

as a MUSLIM? Oo bhai Afghanistan is also Muslim country and our emotionally broke nation needs to be told that Muslim Muslim brotherhood was past ab tau muslim ko musalman se der lgta hae....and nations go after their interests not based on Muslimship and crap.. Pull yourself out of this bookish quote..

It is sad, but we're not to be blamed for afghans giving indians lap dance....

These Afghans are backstabbing and promoting terror in Pakistan on a daily basis. For them, the concept of Islam and brotherhood doesn't exist. We took them in with the fear of Allah in our heart. We treated them like our own. They have betrayed our trust and hospitality. These Afghans claim our land. The same land that we gave them to live on. That's the enemy we are dealing with.

We cannot question our own kindness. We have let these people in for decades whilst their leaders kept barking against our nation. They are hand and glove with India. They promote bloodshed in Pakistan and many attacks have been traced back to Afghanistan. Even our children are massacred in cold blood by these people and they don't hide their resentment against Pakistan.

We have fulfilled our duty to the best ability and Allah is the best judge. Time for Afghans to leave. We also like our children to grow up and live in peace.

Aapki baat thek hai. Magar janab hamari qom or ham....mujhe har lamhe yeh lagta hai Allah koi Halako ya Changez Khan hamary liay tayar kerraha hai. Or ager koi aisi qom ham per musallat hoi to mujhe koi herat nahi hogi. Mera khayal woi hoga jo Imam Ibn e Temia (RA) ka Baghdad walon k liay tha.
Every mufakkir here will advice that we should keep our selves limited to our own problems, but has anybody ever thought why Germany is bothering to take refugees?
It is indeed our problem dear all, it is our problem. When these people will return to Afghanistan, having micro to mega information about Pakistan, where they will find Mousad and RAW with open arms, to induct them, then we will know whether this is our problem or not.
The best solution is to issue them Watni cards, and let them live here. Secondly call those Afghanis who live more than 10 years in Pakistan. Give Nationality to the ones who born here. If America can do it, we also can do it.
