JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Border police in the eastern zone say they will not allow Pakistani forces to construct a new gate at the Torkham border crossing as tension continued for a fourth day on Wednesday.

Afghan and Pakistani forces started exchanges of fire four days ago after Afghan border guards prevented the Pakistanis from constructing a gate at the border crossing allegedly at a disputed territory.

Pakistan insists the gate is being constructed on their side of the border to check cross border movement of terrorists and drug smugglers to either side.

"Border management is aimed at addressing the common concern of infiltration and hence to enhance mutual security of both the countries and their peoples", advisor to Pakistani prime minister on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz said in a statement, adding the two sides should resolve issues through dialogue.

But Afghan officials say the gate’s construction is against international laws. Afghan 301 border zone official Col. Mohammad Ayub Hussainkhel on Wednesday said Pakistani forces once again fired at the Afghan forces last night and the clash continued for several hours.

To a question, Hussainkhel said: “We will not allow the Pakistanis to construct the gate at any cost because their action is against international laws and we will prevent them.”

The border security official said the morale of their forces was high and were ready for any possible provocation from the Pakistani side.

Meanwhile, 301 border police quick reaction unit commander Balkh Jamal said they would not allow the Pakistani paramilitary forces to construct the gate.

He said the Afghan border forces had been effectively responding to attacks from the Pakistani side and had an upper hand so far.

An injured border police official, Mirwais, told Pajhwok Afghan News he wanted to fight until his last breath in the defence of the country.

“Last night I got injured during the clash with the Pakistanis and after first treatment, I returned to the line of duty. Our commander granted me leave, but I refused to go home.”

The spokesman for Nangarhar governor, Attaullah Khogyani, said the forces at Torkham had been well-equipped. “The governor wants the issue to be resolved through political means, but if the Pakistani side continues the conflict, they will receive a befitting response every moment.”

The situation along the border remained tense for a fourth day on Wednesday and the border crossing remained closed for as many days, bringing to a halt all kind of businesses.

In line with a decision of the National Security Council, Afghan ambassador and President Ghani’s special representative for Pakistan Dr. Omar Zakhilwal was expected to hold talks with Pakistani officials on the border issue today.

And our army and govt have said that they will construct the gate at any costs. Army is committed to border regulation. What international law are we breaking if its located 37 meters inside our territory. Can this border guard answer that or does he consider Pakistan to be occupying afghan land?

Anyhow the construction has resumed and it has commenced. It started 5 hours ago again and a few minutes ago the work has resumed after iftar it seems according to media.

The border police should not take any rash actions and follow the ceasefire.

Is the construction of the gate against international laws to which Pakistan has signed up to? Any legal experts on PDF?

These Afghans are really asking for it now...
correction

Northern Alliance thugs .. mainly racist Penjsheris and Tajiks who hate the majority of Afghan population and brutalises them more than than any occupation army has ever done.

please don't identify them as Afghans.. we are facing the minions of warlords and drug racketeers who benefited from American invasion of Afghanistan and have been involved in chaos inside Afghanistan well before the inception of Taliban.

If you think that the Afghan pashtuns are any better then you are in for a surprise. The Afghan pashtuns want to dismantle Pakistan as much if not more than the tajiks and Penjsheris.

I used to have similar beliefs myself until I came to terms with reality: All Afghans hate Pakistan.

PESHAWAR: The border authorities of Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday formally agreed over ceasefire at Torkham and waved white flags on both sides of the border, it has been learnt.

According to security sources, the border authorities of both the sides met for a short meeting following which they waved white flags on their respective sides.

The construction work on Torkham gate also started following the ceasefire announcement.

Earlier in the day, an Afghan official said that renewed clashes at Pakistan-Afghan border crossing have killed an Afghan border guard and wounded five others, with Pakistan saying it has dispatched more troops and weapons to the volatile border amid an escalation in tension between the two neighbors.

Pakistan officials maintain that the unprovoked firing from Afghan forces is disrupting border management efforts by Pakistan Army.

"Strengthening of management and facilitation of the movement of people and vehicles across the border is an important part of counter-terrorism effort and also for checking drug trafficking and other illegal activities," Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said in an official statement on Wednesday.

Aziz said that durable peace and stability across the border cannot be achieved without taking effective measures for strengthening border controls.

"Border management is aimed at addressing the common concern of infiltration and hence to enhance mutual security of both the countries and their peoples", he remarked, and added the two sides should resolve issues through dialogue.

Afghan border police official Jamal Khan said the guard was killed late Tuesday. Another Afghan guard was killed the first night of the violence and a Pakistani officer wounded in the border clashes died on Tuesday.

Pakistan's security officials confirmed the latest exchange of fire but say the ceasefire is now holding.

Absolutely not. It was the goodwill of Pakistan which allowed unfiltered entry to any tom dick and harry from Afghanistan. But since the Kabul government has shown no inclination of officially recognising the border, has allowed terrorist groups which target Pakistan to reside in Afghanistan, and has heavily courted India, there is no incentive left for Pakistan hence to care about their wishes.

On legal grounds, under the principle of uti possidetis set in international law, Pakistan legally inherited the partitioned borders of the former British India, and as such anything that we do on our side of the border is perfectly legal under international law.

So they want to provoke us not to fight but to expel pashtoon afghan refugees. So pakistan lose its influence in pashtoon afghans plus their disperse and hunger make them more weak against northern alliance.
OMG, that's a win win situation.
