Admiral: U.S. submarine forces decline as forces of China, Russia, Iran adv

The first generation kilos were much more silent than Los angeles class nuke boats and did not have AIP propulsion. Diesels can easily run silent in noisy littoral waters .Second, the bigger the sub the more the maintainence costs. Also for littoral waters ,diesels without AIP operate marvellously well.

Big is not always better.

It was the older diesels before kilo that were noisy. After Kilo class,Diesels are getting better and better and cost effective too.

While your point regarding improvement in Diesel tech is valid but Nuclear reactors are also improving and at a much better margin than Diesel engines and Diesel engines have reached frontier of their technology while Nuclear tech has much more scope for improvement.

+ maintenance cost has no relation to stealth of a submarine and bigger size means much more space for acoustic shielding and better sensors.

The issue is that there are only a couple of SeaWolf's subs while there are tons of Ohiao. The Ohaio sub may not be upper offensive compared with the SeaWorld, but again, I guess since both are attack subs they will serve the purpose.

I don't think Russia had ever had any sort of a problem with the Muslims; but Russia happens to be a victim of terror as much as India, Pakistan, and Spain.

Don't waste your time. This guy is obsessed with civil defense strategies.

Yes,because I have done some good research on NBC and its countermeasures. My main interests are the defensive side and that Russia does specialise in.

Ohio is not an attack sub ,but a SLBM carrier .

See,I am not convinced in arguements like basic science, improvement blah blah.Do you have open source documents comparing the decibels of diesels while snorkeling and of nuclear . A comparison would be good.I am not a specialist on this ,but neither are you and most open source documents claim that diesels are more silent.

Bigger sub can also create more maintainance issues, more components.Small is better. But always if you have something for this ,then I would love to see.

Most of the open source documents claim that a Diesel submarine is quieter than a nuclear sub when it is operating on electric power stored in it's batteries while Nuclear sub is quieter compared to SSK when SSK is operating on diesel power.

Okay, how much is the decibels ?any charts you have or calculations of your own? How much time taken to recharge while snorkeling?

Decibels of nuclear
Decibels of diesel on electric motors
Decibels of diesel on snorkeling.

That will be interesting for me.

How could these calculation be made when Engine characteristics of both Nuclear and Diesel engines are not Public.

What is known is Modal characteristics of diesel and Nuclear engines so trends could be predicted.

Any attempt to chart exact noise level would be an exercise of futility and Ego boosting.

So you also say that you have no idea on whether diesel snorkeling or nuclear is more silent?

Okay.Forget it. I think I will leave it here.I thought you were a skipper/sub officer because with the confidence you were claiming.

I am a mechanical engineering student. I was claiming it on basis of general engine characteristics and some literature that i have read from open sources and some illegally downloaded books.

Diesel engine are bound to produce much more noise than a nuclear reactor while in operation.

This is a claim you have not provided evidence for .Bound to ,will do are not sufficient.Diesel engine subs can be acoustically tiled also effectively ,if the claims of Mr.Polmar are right. But then I leave the thread here. But if you have some calculations or open source data on decibels of snorkeling and nuclear reactors in future,do contact me via pm.
