Pro-Taleban militants in Pakistan's tribal areas have released a video of 16 kidnapped soldiers.

The footage shows one of them being beheaded.

The abductions coincided with a sharp rise in violence over the past month as peace deals between the government and the tribesmen unravelled.

More than 60 soldiers and 250 militants have died in a growing insurgency in the border regions near Afghanistan as troops have redeployed heavily.

The video shows four armed teenagers standing behind a soldier before one of them cuts off his head.

The footage was released amid negotiations to free the 15 soldiers still held by militants in the tribal area of South Waziristan.

Crucially, elders are trying to restore a peace deal that has been severely strained by the recent redeployment of troops.

The return of military check posts also triggered the end of a peace agreement in neighbouring North Waziristan.

Since mid July, pro-Taleban tribesmen there have carried out almost daily bombings against the Pakistan army.

The military said it has boosted its presence in the tribal areas to stem a wave of attacks spreading throughout the country.

But it is widely believed it also acted under strong American pressure to resume operations in the border region.

US officials say that a peace deal struck in the past two years failed to stop the flow of Taleban and al-Qaeda fighters into Afghanistan, creating a sanctuary for them instead.

The Americans have threatened to take action if Pakistan does not.

At the weekend, coalition forces admitted to another strike across the border, although Pakistan denied it took place.

The growing insurgency in the tribal area has alarmed Pakistanis.

Analysts agree that pro-Taleban forces largely control the region but they also say military force alone only strengthens support for the militants.

Militants kidnap 4 in northwest Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pro-Taliban militants kidnapped an army officer, two guards and a government official near an army base in northwestern Pakistan, officials said Saturday.

The four men were seized late Friday in Ladha, a town in the troubled South Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan, where Pakistani forces have carried out scores of operations against foreign and local militants in recent years.

Also Saturday, an army official said three suspected militants were killed in North Waziristan, though a villager claimed the men were not militants.

Pakistan, a key U.S. ally in the war on terror, has deployed thousands of troops to its tribal regions amid pressure from Washington to flush out al-Qaida and Taliban elements. The army said Friday that 60 soldiers and 250 militants had died in a month of fighting near the Afghan border.

The violence comes as Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf faces political challenges from former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, who seek to return from exile.

No one has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. A security official in the area, who requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of his job, said officers and tribal elders were trying to ensure the release of the kidnapped men.

The official identified the kidnapped officer as Lt. Col. Mohammed Shahid, but provided no other details. No spokesman for the Pakistani army was immediately available for comment.

A senior army official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk to media, confirmed the incident but said he had no information on the captives' whereabouts.

The army official also said a Pakistani army helicopter had fired on a vehicle near Miran Shah — the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region — killing three suspected militants.

The official said the vehicle was targeted because it failed to stop at a checkpoint at Mir Ali, about 12 miles from Miran Shah.

But a villager said the slain men were not militants.

"Three innocent villagers were traveling in a car, and they were killed by the army who fired from a helicopter," said Daraz Khan, a resident of Mir Ali.

As the violence has raged in recent weeks, insurgents have started kidnapping troops.

Rebels seized 16 soldiers in South Waziristan two weeks ago and later killed one of them. Local tribal elders and government officials say they are in touch with the militants and hope to secure the release of the remaining 15 soldiers.

They are truly sub-human , in fact they are the fecial discharge of some sub-human species.

Regrettably a significant percentage of Pakistan's public favour such acts. The media is biggest culprit. They have made heroes of the Islamic extremists. We have seen burqa clad female students of Lal Masjid claiming that it was a battle between Haq and Baatil.

A large portion of thugs who occupied Lal Masjid when it was re-opened were residents of Islamabad sector-6 and even Hon Lahore Paaji was trying to condone death of SGS col Haroon as due 'Friendly Fire'. When one finds that educated and rational persons feel this way, how can you blame the uneducated bigots. They believe that this beheading would guarantee them heaven in the after life and are proud of it.

I agree, I have noticed in past when ever Indian rulers have said any thing hostile or about war on media next day the stock exchanges of both countries have shed points and if the say some thing about peace both stock exchange soared.
See how easy is it for these people to make money, they already know what they will talk to media next day and how it will effect the stock exchange.

On the contrary the Indian stock exchange soared during the Kargil War.
Markets are perfect capital markets where the information if considered vital and of importance makes the markets soar/drop in addition to other parameters...

No they are still held hostage. Today mornings' Al jazeera reported tribals saying they wont release 320 soldiers held hostage.

What you said was partially right, the communications were cut off and the soldiers were forced to set up camps when they were surrounded and taken hostage.

Govt pushes for talks to get troops freed: ‘Soldiers surrendered without firing a shot’

TANK, Aug 31: With the government appearing in disarray over the seizure of more than 150 soldiers in the restive South Waziristan tribal agency, militants on Friday seized in the Frontier Region’s Jandola area four vehicles along with five drivers. The vehicles were carrying rations for security forces.

Though the exact number of missing soldiers was yet to be confirmed, security officials put the number at 156.

However, tribal sources claimed that the number of security personnel held hostage was about 205, including 105 regular troops and 100 personnel of the Frontier Corps. A colonel, three majors and some captains were among the personnel seized by militants.

A jirga comprising parliamentarians and 35 Mehsud tribal elders left Wana for Laddah on Friday for talks with militants after meeting Political Agent Hussainzada Khan in Wana. Mr Khan along with Senator Salih Shah had rushed to Wana in a military helicopter to initiate the dialogue.

Political authorities, meanwhile, detained 20 Mehsud tribesmen in Jandola under the territorial responsibility clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulations to mount pressure on militants to free the security personnel.

Witnesses said the political authorities had initially apprehended 200 tribesmen from a passenger van at Kawar checkpoint near Mianja Fort but later took only 20 of them into custody.

A tribal elder claimed that only 20 militants were able to take hostage over 200 soldiers, 129 of whom were fully armed.

“It is difficult to believe that 200 soldiers surrendered,” he said while talking to Dawn. He said the administration had detained innocent people who were in fact fleeing the area for fear of militants.

Local people said the weather conditions were normal in the region and the government claims that the soldiers were stuck in the area due to bad weather was not correct.

Security experts believe that the kidnapping of such a large number of soldiers would affect the morale of security forces operating in the tribal region.

“So many security personnel getting captured without firing a shot affects the image of our forces in the country and also sends a negative signal to the international community,” a security analyst in Peshawar remarked.

The troops, it may be mentioned, were captured when a convoy going from Wana to its base in Laddah was intercepted in the Momi Karam area.

Sources said the militants had blocked the road and ordered troops to lay down their arms and surrender communication equipment. After disarming them, the militants divided the soldiers into small groups and took them to unknown places.

Director-General Inter Services Public Relation Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad avoided saying that the troops had been kidnapped. “Soldiers are with the local tribesmen somewhere in Laddah area. It cannot be termed as kidnapping,” he told Dawn.

He claimed that there had been some misunderstanding about the movement of troops in the area and a jirga had taken initiatives to bring the soldiers back to camp.

On Thursday, he had said that the soldiers had been stranded somewhere in the area due to inclement weather.

According to late-night reports, the jirga had reached Laddah and was likely to hold meetings with the militants on Saturday morning. —Staff correspondent Zulfiqar Ali contributed to the report
