Fighters killed in Pakistan clashes

At least 12 fighters including foreigners have been killed in a raid by Pakistani gunship helicopters in a remote tribal area near the Afghan border, according to the Pakistan military.

Mortars were fired during Tuesday's attack at a hideout some 20km west of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district.

"There are unconfirmed reports that six to eight Arabs, Tajiks and Chechens were among the militants killed in the operation," Major-General Waheed Arshad, a senior military spokesman, said on Wednesday.

He said around 10 fighters were also wounded.No ground forces were used in the attack between the Pakistani army and Taliban fighters.

Staging post

"The militants used to regroup and prepare attacks on security forces and take refuge at these compounds, so security forces targeted them," Arshad said, calling the compounds a "staging post."

A doctor in Miranshah said his hospital received three wounded people, including two children.

Witnesses there said the helicopters destroyed three houses. They also said the army was using mortars and artillery.

"As soon as firing began we ran out and during that a bomb hit our house," Attaullah Jan, one of the wounded, said from a hospital bed.

CHAKWAL: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Wednesday that the killing of Chinese people in Pakistan was an international conspiracy and the Government would try its best to crush this conspiracy because Pakistan and China have a very close and brotherly relation from the last 60 years and these relations would be further strengthened.

He was talking to the media persons at Kalar Kahar when he came here to visit a utility store on Wednesday.

Federal Minister for Industries Jahangir Tareen, Federal Minister for information Muhammad Ali Doorani and Federal Minister for Kashmir affairs Major? Tahir Iqbal were accompanying him.

District Nazim Chakwal Sardar Ghulam Abbass and Tehsil Nazim Kalar Kahar Pir Sajid Hussain Shah welcomed prime minister at the helipad made out at the ground of Fauji Foundation School Kalar Kahar.

Prime Minister immediately visited utility store and he ordered that all the customers that were inside the utility store must be provided Rs.1000 each material on behalf of prime minister account freely.

Prime Minister speaking on this occasion further told that Govt. is very keen to provide essential commodities to the common man and utility store would be open at every union council of the country.

Replying to an other question prime minister was of the view that the meeting of Pak Afgan Jirga at Kabal on 9th August would be very important and if it would be successful then far reaching effects would emerged in this sensitive region which was incidentally hit by terrorist activities.

Prime Minister reached here at Kalar Kahar at about 4:00 pm in a helicopter and local administration and police have made elaborate security arrangements and there was a curfew like situation at Kalar Kahar and heavy contingent of police was deployed and the security forces cordoned of the area from all the four corners.

ISLAMABAD: India is neither trying to destabilise Pakistan by meddling in the affairs of Baluchistan nor its consulates in war-ravaged Afghanistan are in anyway directed against the Islamic nation, Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal has said.

"We have assured Pakistan that India is not and does not want to meddle in the affairs of Baluchistan nor it is trying to take advantage of the situation arising after the Lal Masjid operation," 'The News' reported today, quoting the High Commissioner to the Islamic nation as saying.

Pakistan had earlier accused India of meddling after New Delhi had voiced concern over the "spiralling violence" in Baluchistan, where the Islamic nation's security forces have been battling armed tribal militants, saying that the gas-rich province "is our internal problem".

According to Pal, the Indian consulates in Afghanistan were not in anyway directed against Pakistan and have only been overseeing development activities carried out by a number of Indian companies in the war-torn country.

Rejecting Pakistan's concerns on Indian nuclear deal with the United States, he said that it should be of no concern to the Islamic nation as all nuclear facilities falling under the deal would be closely monitored (by the IAEA) and would not be used to develop nuclear weapons.

"If India wants to develop more nuclear weapons, it would certainly use its nuclear facilities, which don't come under the Indo-US nuclear agreement. After all, we are the only country having the technology to use Thorium for getting nuclear technology," Pal was quoted by the daily.

Do you not see the contradictions here? A State is governed by laws, a constitution; that is the essence of a State. How can you say that the Mullahs will not be in charge of setting up a Sharia system when, as you suggest, they will have the authority to declare laws as un-Islamic? The process essentially gives them veto power over the constitution. The Mullahs will either formulate the constitution, in which case I will go back to my earlier argument of "they need to universalize this Sharia system", and present some sort of document detailing the systems salient points, that is acceptable to all the sects; or they need to stay out of it completely and work on peacefully influencing society towards being "moral" and "ethical".
