The number of
electricity-related complaints received by distribution companies in Delhi over the past one week has increased by nearly four times.
Delhi government reports indicate that from just 3,111 complaints recorded on May 30, the problems consumers faced spiked to 11,612 on June 5. On June 4, there were 7,293 complaints with the highest coming from areas under discom BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) that serves East Delhi. Officials said the three discoms together receive about 4,400 complaints daily in peak summer months.

The demand on Monday (June 5) touched 6,361 MW, while Tuesday’s consumption rose to an all-time high of 6,526 MW at 3.31 pm.
Even as the Delhi government once again claimed of having no supply shortage, residents continued to face a harrowing time with long and sporadic power cuts. Areas under discom Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) that supplies power to only about 25% of Delhi’s 50 lakh power consumers faced the maximum outages.
At least 55 areas fed by TPDDL faced outages between 6 am on June 5 to 6 am on June 6 out of which in 16 cases the blackout went on for more than two hours. Discoms BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) and BYPL had 53 cases of power cuts each.
In terms of the longest duration of outages, BRPL had the worst performance with outages lasting up to 6.26 hours in places such as Rajouri Garden, Raja Puri and Vijay Enclave. Other areas that were majorly affected include South Extension, Jangpura, Yusuf Sarai Market, CR Park, Malviya Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Janakpuri, Punjabi Bagh, Chhatarpur, Mehrauli, Okhla Phase I and Dwarka.
With scores of residents agitated over the city’s power situation, Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) have come forward to make their voices heard. “Last year the maximum demand was 6,260 MW and Tuesday’s demand is not even a 5% increase from that. Why is the government still unable to manage the power supply if there is no shortage and when the increase is so less?” questioned BS Vohra of East Delhi RWAs Joint Front.
People complained that outages were more often during the evening or night time making it difficult for them to stay at home. “After a hard day at work, I can’t even sleep peacefully at home. Last night there was no power for nearly four hours,” said Yateesh Jain, a resident of Patparganj.
Tuesday’s consumption was nearly 9% more than the peak power demand of 6,000 MW recorded on the same day (June 6) last year. Gauging the pattern, officials are now predicting that the demand could touch 6,750 MW by June-end or mid-July when the humidity increases.
“A section of people are still using coolers. But once the humidity increases all of them are going to switch to air conditioners which will further increase the load,” explained a power official.
He explained that due to extreme heat and power demand even during the night, the electricity network does not get sufficient time to cool down. This stresses the network and at times, leads to local faults.
Discoms said a lack of space to augment the electricity network also impacts power supply. “In unauthorised colonies, there is no developer and there is no space plan earmarked for utilities. The residents not only don’t allow erecting new poles in front of their flats but also don’t provide any space for installation of new transformers,” discoms said.
Outages also occur due to unprecedented load rise in high power theft areas which lead to trippings and ‘burn out’ of distribution equipment. In many areas people are using power beyond their sanctioned load which also results in outages.

NEW DELHI: Delhi government on Tuesday took note of the large number of complaints regarding power cuts in the city.
On the directions from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal all the three power distribution companies have been asked to put up hoardings across the city with helpline numbers. A daily report of the unscheduled power cuts occurred during the day will have to be submitted to the Chief Minister.
“A large number of complaints were received regarding power cuts. All the distribution companies have been asked to put entire information on their websites and also inform the customers through SMS about any power cuts to occur” informed Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
Delhi government last year during similar outcry over long power cuts said that if there is any power cut that lasts for more than two hours the DISCOMS will pay penalty for that. But the policy did not fan out, according to Delhi government the previous Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung did not approve the file hence nothing moved forward. Sisodia said the proposal will be re sent to the current LG Anil Baijal for approval.
Large parts of the city faced power outages on Monday ranging from one to six hours extending into night. Sweating it out in the heat with no electricity to cool them down, scores of residents took to social media to vent their anger.
