So I was reading the comments. There were several mentions that ATS came up with a different findings than IB. I still can't find official GoI stand on this.

You are right, ATS did investigate this angle (the Maharashtra ATS BTW) and they did make their investigation public that caused quite a stir. But they concluded that purohit was not linked, and BTW this conclusion was made public before the mumbai attacks and shaheed Karkare's death, basically under his leadership. Just clarifying before anyone goes that route.

'Purohit supplied RDX for Samjhauta blast'

This is 10 days before 26/11. If ATS did change its stance, it must have been after the release of this report and before 26/11. Anything on that?

Also, from what I am finding, it's really not clear who carried out these attacks and the investigations seem to be half-hearted. The US went to UN and said LeT was involved, fair enough, but I can't find much on the official GoI stance.

Purohit supplied RDX for Samjhauta bomb: ATS

Mustafa Plumber & Anubhuti Vishnoi
Nashik , New Delhi November 15 The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) suspects that Lt Col Prasad Purohit supplied the RDX that was used in the Samjhauta Express blast on February 18, 2007 that killed 68 passengers.

The ATS suspects Purohit supplied the explosive to a person named ‘Bhagwan’ who is believed to be a link in the bomb blasts.

Seeking an extension of police custody of Purohit, Special Prosecutor for Maharashtra ATS Ajay Misar told a Nashik court that a witness in the Malegaon blast case told the agency that Purohit had claimed he had 60 kg of RDX in his possession which he had got from J&K.

Misar said: “When Purohit was stationed at the Deolali army camp, he had gone to Jammu and Kashmir on official work and is believed to have got 60 kg of RDX and a part of it was given to this link ‘Bhagwan’, who used it in the Samjhauta train blast. The ATS is probing his involvement.”

“Purohit handed over the RDX to Bhagwan who is suspected to be in hiding in the garb of a godman. So Bhagwan is a key link and we hope to learn about his whereabouts and antecedents in the three-day remand given,” Misar told The Indian Express.

The ATS also said that Purohit—along with Pragya Thakur and Dayanand Pandey—is suspected to have played a key role not only in the Malegaon blast of September 29 but in other blasts as well.

The witness, whose statement had been recorded, had said that Purohit showed him two small brown bags containing RDX, which he said he had recovered from J&K, Misar added.

However, Purohit in his statement to the ATS said that he had thrown the 60 kg of RDX into the Jhelum river instead of depositing it in the army depot.

The ATS is also probing the role of a Nashik-based builder who was paid Rs 2.5 lakh by Ajay Rahirkar at the behest of Purohit. The police have already said that funds amounting to lakhs were routed to Rahirkar through hawala channels. Rahirkar, in turn, transferred part of it to Pandey and Purohit’s accounts.

The Haryana police probing the Samjhauta blast (which happened in Panipat in Haryana) are now counting on finding new clues when they get to question Mahant Amritanand alias Dayanand Pandey on Sunday.

The Samjhauta probe trail had reached a dead-end in Indore, but the initial line of investigations was very SIMI-centric as several SIMI leaders including Safdar Nagori came from that area.

Madhya Pradesh police officials involved in the probe last year said that when a SIMI connection failed to emerge, suggestions were made to examine the possible involvement of Hindu right wing groups, but it was not taken up then. Haryana police confirmed the SIMI angle was ruled out after investigations.

A mix of high- and low-intensity explosives was used in the blast on the Indo-Pak friendship train which killed 68 — 42 of them Pakistanis. While a larger quantity of Potassium Chlorate and Sulphur were used to create the bomb, minor quantities of RDX were also found in the bomb, Dr. R K Koshal, ballistic expert from Haryana’s Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed. The use of RDX in ‘traces’ was also seen in explosives used in Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad in May 2007 and also in the Malegaon blast.

“There was RDX in traces in the suitcase bomb on the Samjhauta Express and that much was enough for the blast mechanism,” said Kaushal.

ADG Haryana V N Rai who is heading the Samjhauta blast probe, however, said that there is still no major breakthrough in the investigation.”We are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with Mumbai ATS. Our probe status still stands at Indore”, Rai said.

The bombers had purchased the suitcases from Indore’s Kothari market. Investigations had found that the ‘Kodak’ brand suitcases used in the explosion on the train were purchased from the Abhinandan Bag Centre in Kothari Market while a tailor who sat opposite the bag centre stitched the suitcase covers. That apart, the pipe-bomb shells, Super Saurabh plastic boxes in which the IED was packed were also bought from the same area. Two of the accused in the Malegaon blasts are from Indore.

Yes that was the stir I was referring to, however that was based on a statement made by an accused, that purohit provided RDX, except that RDX was not used for the attack, it was a firebombing. ATS counsel did clarify the confusion a day after.

ATS denies linking Purohit to Samjhauta blast

Rahi Gaikwad

NASHIK: The Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) has denied that Lt. Col. Prasad Shrikant Purohit is linked to the Samjhauta blast.

ATS counsel Ajay Misar clarified on Monday that he had made no statement to the effect that Lt. Col. Purohit had links with the Samjhauta blast. He said the media misrepresented his statement in court on Saturday.

However, he refused to clarify the exact nature of his submission in court.

According to the statement of a witness in court, which was presented by Mr. Misar, Lt. Col. Purohit had 60 kg of RDX in his possession. Some of it was allegedly used in the Malegaon blast and some for the Samjhauta blast. The RDX was given to a person known as Bhagwan for the Samjhauta blast. Bhagwan’s role is still to be probed.

ATS sources said no RDX was used in the Samjhauta blast and, besides, the Maharashtra ATS was only probing the Malegaon blast.

Meanwhile, a Haryana police team is interrogating Lt. Col. Purohit in connection with some other blasts. The ATS sources refused to clarify which were the blasts in question.

Bajrang Dal Owns up Samjhauta Express Blasts?
DR. S. AUSAF SAIED VASFI comments on the threat letter sent allegedly by Bajrang Dal to Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, and concludes that our State machinery deliberately seems to ignore mischief of the Saffron outfits.
M

any a face would go red
if we ask: Do some of our
State Governments, even those ruled by the Congress, which heads the UPA dispensation at the Centre, succumb to parochial instincts while dealing with terrorists belonging, directly or indirectly, to the Saffron fraternity?

FRESH STORY

The fresh one is an un-signed, threat letter, addressed to a Rashtriya Lok Dal, Muslim Parliamentarian, Maulana Mahmood Madni. The General Secretary of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind is a member of the Rajya Sabha from Dehradun and has, earlier too, received such hate calls.

That, however, is not the point, particularly for an important office-bearer of a party which has a history of fighting the British shoulder-to-shoulder with the Congress.

The point is: the said letter, which is in Marathi, owns up, on behalf of the Bajrang Dal, responsibility for the blasts in the Samjhauta Express, that claimed 68 lives on February 18.

Observers feel the letter, delivered at the Jamiat headquarters in New Delhi, has purportedly been written by members or activists of the Dal. A similar letter has been received at the Jamiat’s Mumbai office also.

The Gravamen

The gravamen of the letter is on distancing the Maulana from the Dalits and the backward classes and their welfare. The writers of the letter, with a view to convincing their addressee of their clout and might, refer to other blasts also and admit in so many words that it was they who caused blasts in the Samjhauta Express.

The typed letter on plain paper starts with "Idiot!" Its operative parts are: We caused blasts in the Samjhauta Express. Have you forgotten the blasts of the past? Keep our might in mind. Don’t try to be smart. We are determined to make Hindu Rashtra. Nothing would happen to us. It would be your men who would be arrested.

In a telephonic interview, this columnist confirmed the contents of the said letter with the Secretary of the Jamiat.

MEDIA RESPONSE

It was only The Statesman which covered the story. But its 80-word reportage too does not refer to owning the blasts. No other national newspaper found newsworthiness in the Bajrang Dal owing up of the blasts.

The TV channels too ignored the story. Yes! The Urdu Press, particularly the Hindustan Express and the Akhbar-e-Mashriq frontpaged the story.

Note this calculated conspiracy of silence of the print and electronic media and contrast it with "juicy coverages" and "jucier talk-shows" organised to demonise the major minority of plural Bharat and the ideology it pursues.

The chief culprit, we feel, is not media. The chief culprit is the eyes and ears of the administration. You can awaken one who is sleeping. But awakening a person who is wide awake is not possible. That is perhaps the case with those at the helm of affairs. They deliberately seem to ignore mischief of the Saffron outfits.

MISCHIEF MAKERS

Bajrang Dal, like its other sister organisations, is a seasoned mischief maker. But often the truth bares itself in the most strange ways. With regard to the April 6, 2006 bomb blasts, a gory story continues to make sounds even today in which two Bajrang Dal office-bearers, Naresh Rajkondwar and Himanshu Phanse had been reduced to smithereens, when they, along with three others, were manufacturing bombs.

From the place of occurrence, which was a flat, the police had seized fake beards, skull caps, sets of kurta-shalwar, timers, switches, detonators, 1.5 kg gunpowder and a diary containing formula of bomb making.

Sanjay Chaudhuri, a member of Bajrang Dal was held in Nanded. His name was bandied about several times in several circles. Observers had then surmised there might be a link between the April 6, 2006 blast in Nanded and September 8, 2006 blasts in Malegaon as well as those in Jalna.

ANTI-MUSLIM AIR

Because of sustained anti-Muslim propaganda, it looks as if the intelligence gathering mechanism is single-mindedly focused on Muslim outfits. On the other hand, the Right-wing fundamentalists are since long in battle dress. They do daily drills, target-practice and learn how to destabilise the plural polity.

When a common man knows all this, how is it that our hydra-headed Intelligence set-up is not that enlightened on the crucial subject?

New Delhi had done well by handing over "confessions" of a Pakistan national regarding his role in the October 2005 bombing of Police Special Task Force headquarters in Hyderabad.

But just think of the embarrassment of our diplomats rather Government at the AJM in case the other side comes up with the Bajrang Dal operators’ "confession" with regard to the bombing of the Samjhauta Express. Will our argument that the confessional letter is un-dated and un-signed prove our case beyond any shred of doubt?

¨
There are indicators which suggest the authorities concerned have failed to show duty-consciousness and sincerity in such cases and the powers-that-be have not tweaked their ears for palpable negligence and slackness.

The Muslim leadership as well as the victims and sufferers have consistently cried foul. But of no avail!

This happened after the blasts in Mumbai, Malegaon, Nanded and Jalgaon. But that is a somewhat old story.

All right then. It seems like ATS did not link Purohit to the attack.

However, I still can't find much on GoI stance. The whole things seems to be brushed under the carpet.

Its a police investigation, independent investigation being done by maharashtra ATS, haryana police and central IB. Why should indian govt take a stand on it? They have already condemned it, paid compensation.

Rehman malik however said that purohit hired pakistanis to carry out the attack :)

If Qasmani is caught, then the investigation can go ahead, but that will require cooperation from pakistani govt :disagree:

.
Well the attacks were carried out on Indian soil. The Indian government has to take a stand on who they believe carried it out. That's how things normally work in cases of terrorist attacks.

.
Well pakistani govt took their stand, that pakistanis carried out the attacks, but they were hired by Purohit :)

Colonel Purohit was interrogated by one of the director investigations, Kur Kury, who was killed in the attack. This clearly demonstrates that there were some Pakistan-based Islamists who had been hired to carry out the Samjohta Express attack.

.
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that India is not providing details about Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit who was allegedly involved in Samjhota express bombings in 2007, which killed at least 68 people.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Malik alleged that Colonel Purohit had also hired some militants to carry out the bombing.

"Colonel Purohit was interrogated by one of the director investigations, Kur Kury, who was killed in the attack. This clearly demonstrates that there were some Pakistan-based Islamists who had been hired to carry out the Samjohta Express attack. That is the dossier we have requested India to provide us with, but they haven't," said Malik.

"Even today I sent a message inviting them to come and sit with us and talk; we will bring our evidence and they can bring theirs," he added.

Regarding Swat, the minister denied any kind of extra-judicial killings in the valley.

He told the media that 2,200 militants have so far been killed in military offensive.

He said that the military has achieved substantial amount of success in the operations in tribal areas. He also mentioned that Pak-Afghan agreements on counter-terrorism are also due in a few weeks time.

As New Delhi and Islamabad take potshots at each other, non-state actors are thriving in the region, killing innocents in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
