A motorcade of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been in a traffic accident in Sao Paulo. The car carrying Abe was not involved. 12 people on other cars sustained minor injuries.

Abe's entourage and foreign ministry officials were travelling on a highway on Friday evening during his Latin American tour. They were going from an airport to a hotel when 3 of the vehicles were rear-ended.

About 20 people were on board the 3 cars.

Abe is expected to follow his itinerary as scheduled in Sao Paulo.

His party arrived in the city earlier in the day after leaving the capital Brasilia.
