That is actually proof that this government did what is necessary, not just what is populist. That increase in duty alone got the government something between $15-20 billion. While the oil price decrease may have been pure luck, how it was handled showed a bit of fiscal judgement. The government has also done a reasonable job trying to link the gas subsidy to bank accounts, the effects of that will show up over a period of time. The auctions of both spectrum as well as the mines while not a decision that the government took on its own, did have the benefit of securing additional finances both to the centre & in case of the mines, to the states.

Agreed....though a bit painful that this mess(non auctioning of mines) was going on even during Vajpayee govt ... As of now i have just one issue with Modi govt which is making me feel that at the end of the day politics wins over morals all the time... Punjab is hotbed of drugs and narcotics....and finally someone cracked the whip by getting Majhithia arrested...however due to Akali's support in Delhi(which was of no use) BJP got the officer in-charge transferred...

No buddy your assessment seems to be wrong...They very well knew what they were promising....however winning elections is important and what you can do when people(read us) want freebies?? There is a demand and that's why supply, no??

However after winning elections you need to make right choices....you need to fulfill promises with economic prudence in mind...For example there was no need to slash water and electricity bill right on day 1...they could have waited and pushed harder for the Audit of power companies(that is what they are banking heavily on)...because if Audit doesn't bring anything back then Delhi is in big soup....Increase in water tariff is just a small example of how this subsidy bill will keep blooming..!!

This is the very same party that when in opposition helped pass the same bills they now seek to change, both the land bill & the nuclear liability bill (where they forced that clause in). That was the BJP putting partisan politics over national interest. I'm not surprised in the least with what you point out.
