A two-front threat emerging for Pakistan | Pakistan | News | Newspaper | Daily | English | Online

ISLAMABAD – A nightmare security scenario for Pakistan seems to be emerging - that of a two-front military conflict. Pakistan is already facing an internal militancy aided and abetted from Afghanistan and is threatened with all manner of likely US boots actually coming into Pakistan. Already, the drone attacks on Pakistani soil have increased. For all these reasons, Pakistan has moved a large chunk of its forces away from its Eastern border with India and along the LoC, and moved them to the Western front along the international border with Afghanistan as well as into FATA.

Now India has upped the military ante against Pakistan after meetings between Indian officials and America’s Holbrooke and Gates. Hence we are seeing the unprovoked Indian military firing at Pakistani forces across the international border, the working boundary and across the LoC, which has resulted in death and injury for Pakistani soldiers. What can possibly be the Indian intent at this time to undertake such military adventurism? Had it been given some go-ahead by the Americans.

This new military provocation comes when there seems to have been a decision made by the British and Americans to give India a major military role in Afghanistan. The two allies are all set to spring this nasty decision onto Pakistan at the international conference on Afghanistan in London at the end of this month when it will be proposed that India train the Afghan National Army - something it is already doing at a small level covertly and on that pretext already has its operatives in Afghanistan. It is these operatives who are conducting the aid and assistance to militants within Pakistan.
In view of these developments, what are the immediate options for Pakistan which will protect its interests as well as signal an effective message to both the US and India?

First and most immediate, Pakistan needs to move its troops back to its Eastern front and cease operations in FATA. We need to distinguish between our militancy problem, which is certainly threatening and very real, but has multiple dimensions, and the misguided US ‘War on Terror’. On the Western front, it needs to realign its forces along the Chaman border area with Afghanistan where it is expected US boots may enter Pakistan on the ground.

Second, it needs to tell the US in no uncertain terms that it will not tolerate these Indian military incitements and may well up the ante also choosing its own time, place and type of response.

Third, Pakistan needs to categorically refuse to participate in the London Conference if the plan to train the Afghan National Army by India is even discussed informally. In fact, under the circumstances, if India participates in the Conference, Pakistan should consider the option of boycotting it. Let us see how far the US and UK get in Afghanistan without Pakistan’s active cooperation!

Fourth, it is time to demand that Indian operatives move out of Afghanistan and Indian consulates in Afghanistan along the border area with Pakistan be closed.

The fact that the Indian aggression has come immediately in the aftermath of the discussions between the Indians and visiting Americans including Defence Secretary Gates, and following on the heels of the visit to Kabul by India’s DG MI, shows only too clearly the Indo-US nexus in terms of presenting Pakistan with a possible two-front threat.

Or India should refuse to get involved in the internal affiars of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

We are not diving our nose into pakistan, we are Ready to train Afghan troops If they want us to, and yes, we already are playing small roles there by Constructing buildings, schools, Educating poor afghans.... And would not mind training there military aswell

And why you start helping your poor first.

Don't hear much of the stuff you mentioned in the news. May be you are there to construct 10 schools at a time, and you're probably constructing maybe 2 to show that you're doing something, and rest of resources are going you-know-where.

Our Embassys are by itself not getting enough security there and had been blasted twice in the history. whats the use constructing 10 schools, 2-3 schools are well more than enough and moreover USA is not giving us funds to construct any infrastructure There,Its from our own funds we are helping them, So no resources are getting wasted.... And Our teachers have taken it up as a mere service to go there and teach those who are not blessed enough to have education... Its In a way our need aswell because better the education less the probability of them getting misguided by anti-social elements

NEW DELHI - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in New Delhi on Jan. 18 for two days of discussions about arms sales and regional security.

Topping the arms list discussions are Javelin anti-tank guided missiles, light howitzers and Stryker infantry vehicles, Indian Defence Ministry sources said. Ministry officials want to use the Foreign Military Sales route because it would be cheaper and faster, a senior ministry official said.

Last year, the Indian Navy ordered six Boeing P-8 maritime patrol aircraft worth $2.1 billion.

Gates and Indian leaders will also discuss how New Delhi can promote security in Afghanistan and cooperate in counter-terrorism efforts cooperation with Washington, a U.S. diplomat here said.

Gates will talk with his Indian counterpart A K Antony on Jan. 19 and is also scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

These will be the first high-level talks between India and United States since Singh's November visit to the White House.

While the major hurdle to Indo-U.S defense ties was overcome last year with an agreement on End Use Monitoring on American weaponry and equipment, Washington now wants New Delhi to sign a Logistics Support Agreement and a Communications Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement.

Yes. I too agree it is a concern for Pakistan but not related to India basically. All this drone/USA things are Pakistan's internal issue. We understand the Pakistan eastern problem but India is not going for any adventure. There is no benefit India could get out of it.

Author should do some research what was the reason behind this border skirmish. And it was poor attempt to tell India was given some kind of go-ahead by other countries. Last time when India and Pakistan was engaged with each other, same USA was trying hard to make a stalemate ot putting sanctions on both.

It is really bad journalism. India has said many times that it is not going to send its army to Afghanistan. I am not sure what the fuss is about.:what:

In view of these developments, what are the immediate options for Pakistan which will protect its interests as well as signal an effective message to both the US and India?

This is Pakistan's action item.

Pakistan is free to move its troops. However the question is, is Pakistan will be doing it keeping in mind about its internal issues. Also it would have to face USA pressure in such regard.

Second, it needs to tell the US in no uncertain terms that it will not tolerate these Indian military incitements and may well up the ante also choosing its own time, place and type of response.

Not related to India.

Pakistan doesn't seem to boycott coming summit. It just had a meeting with Afghanistan and Iran related to it.

Fourth, it is time to demand that Indian operatives move out of Afghanistan and Indian consulates in Afghanistan along the border area with Pakistan be closed.

Whether Indian consulates will be closed or not, this is eentirely between India and Afghanistan. Pakistan has no role in this.
Just to note, India has same number of consulates as Pakistan has. The location of them is same as well. :smokin:

The fact that the Indian aggression has come immediately in the aftermath of the discussions between the Indians and visiting Americans including Defence Secretary Gates, and following on the heels of the visit to Kabul by India’s DG MI, shows only too clearly the Indo-US nexus in terms of presenting Pakistan with a possible two-front threat.

No evidence. Sort of conspiracy theory. :blah:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

India has denied many times sending army to Afghanistan. I am not sure why article would suggest it would. All two front theory is based on a thing which is not going to happen.

India, Pakistan and the Battle for Afghanistan - TIME

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghanistan_India_relations

I am looking at articles of india making some progress in Afghanistan, you know, instances of development. First article is an opinion piece by an indian and as far progress goes it only mentions some freezer india made and second article link doesn't work. India may well be doing a little development in Afghanistan, but that's not their main aim behind being in Afghanistan.

. .
Well it's in India's interest to ally with Afghanistan. This prevents Pak getting strategic depth in Afghanistan.
India actually has money and equipment to help Afghanistan - what does Pak have except training to become jihadis ?

Why does india have any interest in restricting afghan taliban? By its own admission, the militants attacking it are Pakistanis and not Afghans.
