The older gentleman they interviewed all along the way reminds me of my grandpa (rest his soul) who loved the railways more than anyone else I know.

The reason i posted the video is because not only does it focus on the natural beauty of the place but also about the people along the railway line, Towns and villages and stations, Interacting with myriad of Lankans of all hues and races and backgrounds.. Lankans are generally languid easy going people, It's their politicians that feck up the place and keep it in a third world shit hole, The irony is it's these same people that keeps electing those wankers, Despite claiming a educated population, Truly is a paradox

I'm awaiting for them to make a couple of docs on the Coastal line and the Northern line to Jaffna, Different topography but equally stunning country side

My Granddad actually worked in the Ceylon railways, Talk about coincidence

Heh same thing in Kerala. They had 90%+ literacy rate for decades now, fat good its done them politically/economically heh. In TN we are truly befuddled with our brother mallus, we say you have this much education and you electing these SOBs again and again promising the same agenda again and again.....while we are much less well educated yet we got something done industrially/economically despite the loutish+freebie agenda of our two parties.

Aye, I honestly dont think there is any unattractive place in SL per se.

Are there any plans to join up the coastal line (from Puttalam) with the feeder line to Mannar and then to Jaffna (say at kilinochi)? Any subsequent plan to then loop all around the coast (from say kilinochi to trinico, batticaloa and then all way around to Galle and maybe feeder connection to Badulla)? I think then SL will have a fully complete railway network, of course not sure of the population/demand pressures for such right now to make it economically feasible.

Hah funny that, my gramp's older brother was a loco pilot for the old metre gauge YP steamer series popular in the South pre and post independence. Never got to meet him, but definitely the source of many stories in the family as a whole.

They were still running a couple YP's as late as mid 90's, wont find them anymore though:

Been all over Sri Lanka. Had a good time. Did a long train journey but unfortunately a Muslim woman in an abaya was bullied by the conductor to the point where she looked very scared until I intervened. Alhumdulliah all got sorted. Sri Lankan love Pakistan but unfortunately Muslims are beginning to have a hard time there as well.

There's so much nostalgia about the railways with that generation, Sadly now few remaining

Yeah, Unfortunately it seems to be a growing concern, Is abaya a face veil ? Muslims in the island have for thousands of years lived peacefully integrated with the rest of the population, rare were conflicts unlike in rest of the subcontinent.. But growing ultra conservative customs from the Middle East which is alien to Lankan Muslims till a decade ago, Wahhabi ideology and self segregation because of that have made the wider community to be apprehensive about some sections of the community, Which at times is unwarranted.. And this feeds the more extremists form the majority

Both sides needs to do some introspection, Before it gets out of hand.. And yes Lankans have always had a soft spot for Pakistani people

Not sure brah, The Infrastructure of the Eastern seaboard were neglected due to the civil conflict for the longest time, They probably do have plans for it.. Maybe @Godman can enlighten us with any local insights
