China’s advances in fifth-generation wireless systems, or 5G, are surpassing those of the United States.

From US regulatory action and proposed legislation it has become clear that America is worried about China’s advances in fifth-generation wireless systems, or 5G, and new research shows they have good reason to be.
China holds a narrow lead over its competition in 5G readiness, according to telecoms research firm Analysys Mason. Their new study , released on Monday, found that China’s proactive government policies along with “industry momentum,” contributed to their current advantage.
“When countries lose global leadership in a generation of wireless, jobs are shed and technology innovation gets exported overseas,” Recon Analytics founder Roger Entner was quoted by trade association CTIA as saying . “Conversely, leading the world in wireless brings significant economic benefits, as the US has seen with its 4G leadership. These are the serious stakes that face American policymakers in the escalating global race to 5G.”
CTIA also played up the importance of findings, urging the policy makers in Washington to wake up to the importance of the technology.
“The United States will not get a second chance to win the global 5G race,” Meredith Attwell Baker, CTIA President and CEO was quoted as saying. “I’m optimistic we will leapfrog China because key leaders in the Administration, on Capitol Hill, and at the FCC are focused on the reforms needed to win the race,” she added.
Despite her optimism, the report found that the US has fallen behind nearly all the potential early adopters in one area of preparedness.
“At the end of 2018, the US will rank sixth out of the 10 countries in mid-band (3–24GHz) spectrum availability, a critical band for 5G,” CTIA summarized from the report. “The US joins Russia and Canada as the only countries currently without announced plans to allocate mid-band spectrum on an exclusive basis to mobile by the end of 2020.”
Meanwhile, “all major Chinese providers have committed to specific launch dates and the government has committed to at least 100 MHz of mid-band spectrum and 2,000 MHz of high-band spectrum for each wireless provider.”
While falling behind in spectrum availability, the US ranked just behind South Korea in third place thanks to wireless provider investment in the area, with many firms committing to launch 5G service by the end of 2018. The study ranked Japan fourth in terms of preparedness.
While the American wireless industry plays catchup in the fast-paced and high-stakes race to lead in the area, Washington is trying to play defense. In addition to locking Chinese 5G leader Huawei out of the US, government agencies are also trying to form a united front with allies against Beijing.
Last February, during a visit from Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to Washington, US intelligence agencies briefed the leader on Beijing’s cyber espionage, deemed among the “top two” risks on the allies’ security agenda.
“When you control telco networks, you can control everything,” one intelligence official said, according to a person present at the briefing.

North America leads race towards commercial 5G deployment, study says
North America seems to be leading the race to launch commercial 5G services, according to a new study by IHS Markit.
The study revealed that 82% of mobile operators globally are participating in 5G tests and trials, but only about 12% – all from North America – plan to commercially deploy the technology in 2018.
“Get ready, 5G is around the corner,” said Stéphane Téral, executive research director, mobile infrastructure and carrier economics, IHS Markit. “5G is going live in North America by the end of 2018, and then in South Korea in 2019. Most operators in Europe, however, aren’t planning to deploy 5G until 2021 or later.”
In the U.S., AT&T and Verizon have plans to launch 5G this year. Verizon is planning to deploy 5G fixed wireless service in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Houston and Indianapolis by the end of this year. The carrier said it will use its pre-standard 5G technology. Verizon also announced plans to launch mobile 5G technology next year. AT&T is planning to deploy a mobile 5G offering in a dozen markets this year using gear based on the 3GPP 5G standard. Some of the targeted cities include Charlotte, Raleigh, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Atlanta and Waco.
According to the report, 82% of surveyed operators said that the low latency of 5G was the biggest technical driver for commercial deployment. The other main drivers were decreased cost per bit (76%) and increased network capacity (71%).
“Every technical aspect that’s related to substantial improvement in network performance — lower latency, higher capacity, higher bandwidth, higher throughput –while decreasing the cost per bit continues to receive high ratings in our survey,” Téral said. “This is logical because it’s the foundation of the 5G definition.”
Meanwhile, the most challenging network development item on the 5G agenda is the radio, according to the IHS Market study. Some 53% of operator respondents said the Radio Access Network is the area of the network that will require the biggest development effort to make 5G happen, followed by transport (24%) and management (14%).
Extreme mobile broadband (eMBB) was the highest-rated 5G use case driver among survey respondents, followed by real-time gaming. As real-time gaming requires a super-fast network with low latency, it cannot occur in the absence of eMBB; the same applies to high-definition (HD) and ultra-high-definition (UHD) video services and tactile low-latency touch and steer. Even so, respondents expect fixed-wireless access (FWA) to be ready for commercial deployment first, according the IHS Markit.
“The bottom line is early 5G will be an extension of what we know best: broadband, whether in FWA or eMBB form,” Téral said. “Don’t expect factory automation, tactile low-latency touch and steer, or autonomous driving to be ready on 5G anytime soon despite being touted as the chief 5G use cases.” https://www.rcrwireless.com/2018082...e-towards-commercial-5g-deployment-study-says

Qualcomm is making 5G in phones a reality
Qualcomm has a plan to bring super speedy 5G connectivity to consumers' smartphones by next year.
The chipmaker said Wednesday that its upcoming 5G platform will feature a system-on-a-chip built on the 7-nanometer mode process. When paired with the company's Snapdragon X50, it'll enable what Qualcomm calls the first 5G-capable mobile platform for mobile devices.
Qualcomm said it's already begun sharing the upcoming platform with several handset makers for inclusion in their next-generation devices.
"We are very pleased to be working with OEMs, operators, infrastructure vendors and standards bodies across the world, and are on track to help launch the first 5G mobile hotspots by the end of 2018, and smartphones using our next-generation mobile platform in the first half of 2019," Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon said in a statement.
Qualcomm said it'll share more details about the new platform in the fourth quarter.
The announcement marks another step toward actually deploying the next generation of wireless technology, which promises heightened speeds, superior responsiveness and better coverage. 5G is seen as the foundational technology for other areas like self-driving cars and streaming virtual reality, and it starts with these early deployments.
Last month, Qualcomm pushed 5G closer to reality with the unveiling of its new QTM052 millimeter wave and QPM56xx sub-6GHz radio frequency antenna module families. The chips are small enough to fit in handheld devices while letting phone makers cover the gamut of 5G airwaves, including the shorter-range but faster millimeter wave spectrum and the more reliable but slower sub-6GHz airwaves.
AT&T has already identified six of the dozen markets where it expects to deploy its super speedy network this year. Verizon also plans to launch limited mobile 5G service this year, while T-Mobile and Sprint are setting things up now for a commercial launch early next year.
Handset makers and chipmakers are working to get devices ready for 2019 as well.
