Is China developing new port facilities along the Indian Ocean—the so-called string of pearls—to strengthen its military presence in South Asia and contain India?

China

The string of pearls argument is fraudulent—it’s simply false. This concept was developed in the West to explain China’s acquisition of strategic bases and construction of port facilities in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, but when it was examined by the U.S. government and other scholars, the theory was found baseless.

While Beijing has assisted governments and countries in developing ports with the help of Chinese companies, the assistance has primarily been designed to improve the abilities of these ports to operate as commercial entities and establish facilities where resources—primarily energy supplies—can be shipped inland. There is little—if any—evidence that the Chinese military is involved. It’s a compelling idea that makes sense from afar, but a close look at the details reveals the flaws.

A string of Pearl is a false concept but India is still using that argument to bully China.

Ok Hafiz Sayid,

So Pakistan is not leasing Gwadar to China in return for the undying friendship that China has given? Gwadar has not been linked with Karachi? Karachi is not being linked with the Karakoram Highway even as we speak?

Gwadar will give China a port on the Arabian sea. The Indian Ocean route for Chinese oil tankers, having to negotiate the Malacca Straits
will be a thing of the past. This is a false concept?

"This concept was developed in the West to explain China’s acquisition of strategic bases and construction of port facilities in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar" ---- Who the f**k is the west to say anything? We are seeing this happening in front of our eyes. When Pakistan is ready to gift away its land to China, the other countries in question don't even figure. This is a false concept?

Who the hell cares for what you think? Quoting a Chinese article and calling India a bully!!!!

China’s naval analyst, Zhang Ming, contends that India’s Andaman and Nicobar islands could be used as a ‘metal chain’ to block Chinese access to the Straits of Malacca, known as China’s ‘Malacca Dilemma’ and argues India is building an ‘Iron Curtain’ with its influence in the Indian Ocean islands, and ganging up with US on a defense framework. During the Second World War the Japanese built airfields in the Andaman Islands, and China worries that India could emulate this strategy, as well.

why are chinese so violent and agressive wen this term "look east policy" is used. each coountry has right to protect its own interests. like china is spreading its sphere on influence in BD, sri lanka, nepal , same way we want to engage with south east asian countries.

The world does not revolve around India.

India should not overestimate its own importance.

The Indian Ocean does!

Indeed, they are for ensuring Chinese oil supply even if the Straits of Malacca is blocked for any reason.

However, a commercial port can also be used for military purposes.

Gwadar is possibly the world deepest sea water port. Ideal for submarines and heavy warship moorings.

The Chinese never do anything in an overt manner.

Notice how the Peaceful Rise of China, which lulled all, has become an Aggressive Enforcement in the South China seas!!

As far as Nepal is concerned the Chinese are inflamed since one of the Minister is a Tibetan!

Diplomatic row bet China, Nepal over Tibetan minister: report

Kathmandu, Apr 18 (PTI) A diplomatic row has erupted between China and Nepal as Beijing expressed dissatisfaction over the appointment of a minister of Tibetan ethnic origin by the communist party-led government of Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal.Chinese embassy officials in Kathmandu have expressed dissatisfaction over the appointment Lharkyal Lama as State Minister for Finance who is allegedly connected with the 'free Tibet movement,' a CPN-UML party source said.

Exactly, it was cooked up by the west and india is buying it, hence the pathetic look east policy loooool

the very much slang in which u define east Asia policy display u people r not very happy about it,whatever it may pathetic or flamboyant it is part of Indian foreign policy(a successful policy),and if u feel we should not be wary of ur South Asian incursion problem then the same applies to u.

and if u feel we should not be wary of ur South Asian incursion problem then the same applies to u.

True enough. I have never been particularly worried about this "look East" issue.

Japan and South Korea already have a very strong supporter, the USA. India can never hope to replace the USA in this regard.

Also, Japan and South Korea are economically tied to China. Both of them have China as their largest trading partner.

For East Asia, the big players are the USA and China. India can try to get some influence in the region, but their influence will ultimately be limited.
