Well thats true, but that was also the reason I told that if they stayed longer the current Delhi would have a different image completely, meanwhile I dont consider all this as pride or achievements,we all r happy with the Delhi,Mumbai and Kolakata we developed.

You are kidding, right? I've been to Delhi recently and they have done a decent job I guess. But Bombay is a nightmare in urban planning - ditto for Calcutta. Think about it - till the Brits were around ALL the roads of Bombay were washed everyday with water - this dramatically reduced after independence and it was actually news when they washed the streets with water when Obama came visiting. The Brits built the suburban railway system to handle a population of 1 million when the population of Bombay was half a million - this same system with minor tweaks supports a city of 20 million. Calcutta is a laughing stock when compared to Bombay. Let's admit it - we f... up ...big time.

What tanlixiang wrote was in perfectly standard spoken American English. You'd have to be really stuck-up to find that "crude" and "offensively colorful".

Apparently you have not applied your mind or you have some understanding deficit in the English Language.

Do read the post once again.

it says:

The issue of interest is Singapore's financial health compared to Hong Kong and not the demographic pattern.

I would take it that there is no good reason to be cleverer by half.

In Americanism, the statement above would be a trifle crude, though offensively colourful but it would not be my style and so I would give it a go by,

Now what is the connection with Tanl's American English?

cleverer by half has an American equivalent that is offensive even if colourful and which I indicated I would give it a go by.

Christ on crunch!

Obviously you have no understanding of psychological responses to depressants like alcohol. The symptom he is displaying above would be attributed to a stimulant like caffeine or perhaps even a natural disorder. In the case of the latter it is really quite pathetic how low you have to stoop.

Forgive me. but your post indicates the fallacy of the undistributed middle!

I think it is time for me to give this juvenile pastime I am being dragged into a go by.

Believe what you want. I don't need your stamp on my degree but I do understand a classic case of sour grapes.

Check it yourself, I just did a quick look from Wiki.

If you think the original sources behind the wiki numbers are wrong (IMF for example), then feel free to come back with another list.

Hong Kong - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shanghai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of Indian states by GDP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I went for the nominal numbers. In terms of GDP per capita (PPP) which is used for calculating "standard of living", Hong Kong is actually in the top ten in the world. Singapore too.

GDP
Hong Kong-$320 billion
Shanghai-$233 billion
Beijing-$166 billion.

Mumbai-$ 209 billion
Delhi-$160 billion

http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_GDP#cite_note-UN1-13

Seems Mumbai and Delhi r not that behind of ur premier cities,in turn ahead of many cities

The original sources behind the wiki papers r PWC,now u can cry about that like most Chinese do when they find out the surveys r not in their favour.

And about the sad state of cities of developing democracies against ur communist great wall.

Johannesburg-$ 110 billion
Mexico city-$390 billion
Sao Paulo-4 388 billion
Rio-$ 201 billion
Buenes-$ 362 billion

U actually misunderstood me,I was not implying that these r great cities, but rather trying to say that we should not depend on the legacy of British and develop our cities as much as we can.
