New Delhi: Commemorating the first anniversary of the law against instant triple talaq, the Centre will celebrate July 31 as the ‘Muslim Women’s Rights Day’.

Three senior Union ministers will virtually connect with women from the community across the country and ask them about the change the law has brought into their lives.

The celebration has been planned incidentally a day before Eid al-Adha. Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Smriti Irani and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will address these women through a video link, said officials.

Naqvi on Wednesday shared videos of Muslim women thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing in the legislation. Posted with the hashtag ‘Thanks Modi Bhai Jaan’, the women in the video were seen calling instant triple talaq “a social evil whose abolition has rescued their lives, and made them feel safe”. The BJP minority morcha and the mahila morcha will also organise similar programmes in different states, said a party functionary.

In an article last week, Naqvi had said there has been “about 82% decline in (instant) triple talaq cases” since the law was brought in. He did not give more details on the cases. In a post titled ‘Triple Talaq — Big Reform, Better Result’, which was shared by the Press Information Bureau, Naqvi said instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat was neither Islamic nor legal but was given “political patronage” by parties who wanted votes. He also recalled the resistance to the law by parties such as
Congress, Communist Party, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Trinamool Congress.

However, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed reacted sharply to this development.

“When Mohammad Aklakh, Pehlu Khan and several other Muslim men were lynched after 2014, not once did PM Modi or BJP spare a thought for their wives, who were widowed by mobs who were fuelled by the hate and polarisation unleashed by the BJP,” she told ET.

Terming BJP’s “concern” for Muslim women as nothing but an “eyewash”, she said: “Since last year, thousands of Muslim women have taken to the streets to peacefully protest against the CAA-NRC. If BJP really cared about the plight of Muslim women, it wouldn’t have ignored their pleas when even the entire world took notice.”

All India Muslim Personal Law Board Member Kamal Farooqui said if the government was concerned about Muslim women, it would have at least reached out to them when they were protesting on the streets across Indian cities. “Beyond a point it is just frustrating how some realities can be completely ignored,” he told ET.

If your husband is the type that is impulsive enough to 'talaq' you over simple things and that too thrice all in one instance, then hate to break it to you ladies : You married a fuckwit.

It's better to get that divorce and to go your separate ways.
